155032Not what I expected, and less...
Left on 05/04/2012 for a stay in April 2012
For us, it was a useless beach front. The place is a big chunk of concrete on a small and very rocky beach that we are trying to preserve for the Turtles !
From "beach level condo", after going down 4-5 cement stairs, you can't even enter the water because of the combined surf and rocks. Dangerous to even snorkel in the bay because of the water / rocks / surf ratio. Don't even think young kids, you will need to check them from a couple of feet all the time because of the general outdoor layout. Air conditioning should be cleaned. To complement the views, it includes a nice big house in ruins next to the dangerous pool. From inside the condo, you can't even see the bay. Also, even if we are very accustom with sharing are place with wildlife, I have to say it…way to many cockroaches.
The wifi and cable only works when no clouds nor wind...forget that in akumal !Response from Joyce Flake - 05/11/2012

Wow, what a shocker this was! After never receiving anything less than five stars on this unit and several personal emails lauding everything about it including the cleanliness, friendliness, and location, we don't know how to respond. For this person to title this "Not what I expected, and less . . ." seems very ingenuous to say the least! Please see the following bits of emails with photos provided, sent back and forth between us in answer to questions asked. The various things she 'did not expect' were clearly outlined to her in the emails long before they decided to book the unit for rental. We sincerely hope people will look at the various reviews on this unit and judge for themselves.
First of all, when this person originally requested information about the availability of the unit, part of what I sent her is as follows: "If you click on the picture in the ad in FlipKey, you will see additional pictures of the unit. Half Moon Bay is wonderful for snorkeling and is four or five steps down from the pool area." She responded back with questions, "If we get it right, #2 is practically beach level..." " We responded with, "Hi Fabrice, The beach is just below the pool about six or so steps, depending on how the wind or the waves move the sand around. Our chaise lounges are down on the beach directly beneath the pool and #2 unit. It is about 20 or 30 feet to the water from the steps. (Picture of family with steps in the background)
Now to respond to her negativeness. The 'rocks' she refers to are coral pieces broken off of the reef which is one of the largest in the world and nearly touches each end of the bay. The reef breaks up some of the larger waves on the other side of it and also provides wonderful snorkeling in Half Moon Bay.
To respond to her reference to "a small and rocky beach we are trying to preserve for the Turtles" I will reference a letter I received from a previous renter, "The condo we stayed in was amazing. The first night we got there we even saw a nest of sea turtles hatching, a once in a lifetime experience! The condo was very clean and it was nice having the filtered water system in the condo so I didn't have to worry about getting sick (like I did last time I was in Mexico)." We probably can't add to that?
On the comment, "From 'beach level condo' after going down 4-5 cement stairs", we refer you to the original two emails sent to her outlining" about six or so steps depending on how the wind or the waves move the sand around". It should not have come as a surprise to her about the stairs!!
On the comment, "Air conditioning should be cleaned". We have daily maid service and deep cleaning between guests. Possibly what she is referring to is in the area where the air conditioner is, the ceiling tile gets discolored. It is from the condensation when the weather is hot and the conditioner is running at capacity. We include another statement from a previous guest: "Our stay at Playa Caribe exceeded all expectations. The maid service is excellent, everything was so cclean and I can be a bit of a neat freak. One word to describe Akumal and this condo, OUTSTANDING!". Enough said on the air conditioner?
As for the comment "To complement the views, it includes a nice big house in ruins". We have no control over the house. It is not owned by us and we have spent thousands of dollars trying to get something done about it. The best we have been able to do is paint, at our own expense, the side of the house facing us.
"From inside the condo, you can't see the bay." We have plantings in a garden area by the patio that provide a nice respite during the summer months when the sun is hot and there is no shade available! It is always nice to sit on the patio and cool off. By the way, it is clearly visible in the web ad picture, it is not a "did not expect" occasion.
As to the "dangerous pool". We have brought our grandchildren down to Akumal, two since they were babies (they are now 4 and 6), and four of our grandchildren have been coming for twelve years, they are now teens. The pool was always special to them and we took the time to teach them to respect the pool and the ocean and not go near unless a parent was present. Even our six-year-old now snorkels in the ocean with her parents.
Following are a few sentences from various emails received from past tenants. It's hard to imagine they are talking about the same condo as referred to in the "Review: Not as I expected, and less. . ."?
"We had a wonderful time at your lovely place. We liked it so much, I am thinking about a girls trip for my mother's 80th with my sisters. She is a real beach lover. Thanks much."
"Wow, We could not have been happier with this discovery. This unit has everything and is in the perfect location for the perfect Mayan vacation. Nothing is better than the pool out your door, the sand beyond that and then the Caribbean only footsteps away."
"The condo was perfect for our family. The pool was a delight and most of the time we had it to ourselves. The waves were high in Half Moon Bay. My husband and kids loved it. I snorkeled every day either in the lagoon or in Akumal Bay. We saw lots of turtles and so many fish I cannot name."
"We all had a great time. The beds were all very comfortable. My father-in-law kept up with us and had a great time too. We loved listening to the ocean at night and grilling and eating dinner on the patio by the ocean. Our favorite restaurant in Akumal was a little mom-and-pop place in town - we loved the food there. Also, there was a ton of seaweed this year, but there's not much you can do about that. Thanks."

Swindon, EnglandMagical Location, magical condo
Left on 04/23/2012 for a stay in March 2012
The magic started as soon as we opened the door to the condo - it was exactly as described, and more besides.
To be able to walk down a few steps into the ocean was magic; the condo was obviously loved and cared for by Joyce and Ron, and we quickly felt at home.
Spacious and well equipped - an ideal location to base a holiday from if you want to visit Tulum, or Coba or Chichen Itza or the Mayan Riviera.
Restaurant La Lunita is a short walk down the road (5 mins) to the north for a more formal experience; but we also enjoyed La Buena Vide, a more relaxed beach bar, about the same distance the other way - also worth going to akumal pueblo and trying "The Last Mayan" for a more Mexican experience.
Would we recommend Playa Caribe 2 to our friends - Yes, Yes, Yes.
What did we miss - being English we missed a kettle - we do like a cup of tea; and we also couldn't find any egg cups for our boiled eggs - but those two minor omissions didn't detract from what was a really excellent condo.

Left on 04/23/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Akumal is a delightful village to catch some R&R.; Restaurants within walking distance on the beach. Our accommodation was fully equipped with everything you can need. I loved the view from the shower overlooking the bay.Don't miss the snorkelling out the front, great diversity of marine life. A short walk up the road is the Yal Ku lagoon - like snorkelling in an aquarium. We were a little too early for the sea turtle nesting which we were told happened just outside our unit last year. We spent the days on the sunlounges on the sand - very relaxing. There is a manger on site, Augustine who was a wonderful help, even giving us a lift up the road. We were sorry to leave akumal and hope to be back soon. Thank you Joyce for sharing your wonderful condominium.

Left on 02/29/2012 for a stay in February 2012
My husband and I stayed at the condo for a week. Everything and everyone was wonderful. Its nice that Playa Caribe has a reverse osmosis water system so that you can use the water from any faucet.
Kitchen has all necessary appliances and accessories. Augustine will bring you a grill on request. (We bought two beautiful steaks from Sam's Club in akumal for Valentines day.)
Less than 5 minute walking distance to nice restaurant just north of the condo or casual beach bar just south. Fifteen minute walking distance to town where there are several fine restaurants.
20 minutes drive to Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.
You can snorkel by just walking into the water outside the front door. If its windy, head to Yal Ku (fee) or akumal Bay. Lots of turtles and beautiful fish.
The only suggestion I would have is to be sure to bring coffee!Response from Joyce Flake - 03/01/2012
