Clean, comfortable, quiet, scenic...and lots of turtles.

Left on 08/03/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We wanted to stay in a place that was clean, comfortable, scenic and away from the crowds. Tan Ik on Half Moon Bay fit all those criteria. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We were there in mid July, which was the perfect time to see adult turtles laying eggs and to see babies hatching. Volunteers walk the beach each night to monitor the turtles and to mark the nests after the eggs have been laid. There were more turtle nests in front of Tan Ik than in front of any other condo. Nests that had been laid in May were just starting to hatch the week we were there, yet other adult turtles were also still crawling out and laying new nests of eggs. We also did some scuba dives at Dos Ojos Cenotes and those were spectacular. The dives exceeded our expectations. We were swimming through beautiful limestone formations throughout each dive. We did some ocean dives with akumal Dive adventures which was a short walk down the road from Tan Ik. They were a good operation. The dives were relaxing but not spectacular. My husband and I have been diving all over the world, so we are spoiled. We also walked through a short jungle path to go for a snorkel in Yal Ku Lagoon. Again, this was not spectacular and we were very glad that we had not paid $10 to go in through the main entrance. Because it is calm and protected, this is a nice place for families and inexperienced snorkelers, but not exciting for experienced divers. Snorkeling in Half Moon Bay was pleasant, but also was not spectacular.

Spartan Condo with a Great Pool and Location

Left on 02/25/2012 for a stay in February 2012

The condo was as advertised with its original furniture package and little else decoration or comfort. Tv's were in the bedroom leaving the living area little used (no lamps, only harsh halogen recessed overheads) and feeling like a waiting room at a police station. Kitchen was small, but adequate. Beds were very comfortable and bathrooms ok with lots of hot water. Great maid service.
That said we spent most of our time outside by the pool/beach, which was comfortable and well cared for with a large covered palapa and decent lounge chairs. Snorkeling off the beach is a tough entry (rocky and very shallow for at least 50 yards) but worth the trip out by the reef for its lovely corals, and fish. The location between La Buena Vida bar/restaurant and Yal ku lagoon was great with the La Lunita restaurant next door.
This was our 9th trip to akumal and you really can't go wrong as long as you are there.
