Description from the owner

Casa Gatos is a private villa behind a gated limestone wall, conveniently located between Yalku Lagoon and Half Moon Bay. The house, built in the traditional Mexican manner, around a central, plant filled, courtyard that emerges from a tropical front garden of palms and banana trees, hibiscus and bougainvillea, has been designed and furnished to be comfortably homelike, while accented with Oriental, Mayan and European art, antiques & artifacts.

The three bedroom townhouse can convert into a duplex containing a separate two bedroom and one bedroom suite,, each with its own full kitchen and dining area. Combined with a one bedroom apar...Read more

    Additional Location Information

Akumal is the least well known of the Tripadvisor 2012 Traveler's Choice Top Ten Destinations in Mexico and the 2013 Best Beaches in Mexico. Originating as a diver's resort, it only recently came to the attention of the general traveling public. It is a laid back and friendly resort town sixty miles south of Cancun at the heart of the Riviera Maya, stretching along three bays and a lagoon, in clusters of houses and low rise condos and boutique hotels. Casa Gatos is on a quiet lane midway between Yalku Lagoon and Half Moon Bay and conveniently close to both. When we've told people in other parts of Mexico that we come from Akumal, they exclaim " muy bonita!" ( very beautiful). Visitors come to enjoy the beaches, the reef and the exotic beauty of the lagoon. Yalku is not only like a natural aquarium of tropical fish, it is an underwater fantasy world of rock formations, deep crevices, hidden pools and fallen boulders. As for the bays, their waters are so shallow and calm that you can walk almost out to the reef or glide over fields of sea grass where giant sea turtles graze. And nearby are the largest underwater cave systems in the world and magnificent ruin cities of the ancient Maya Civilization. For sport there is fishing in the deep water beyond the reefs, a world class golf course within three miles, and tennis on the courts at the Casitas,

Casa Gatos, a 5 Star treat!

Left on 05/28/2013 for a stay in May 2013

We have just returned from 10 days at Casa Gatos in akumal, Mexico on the Riviera Maya. The apartments are furnished very comfortably, very beautifully, and completely -- you lack for nothing and have a lot of art to appreciate. The lush garden with fountain is just lovely with local and non-local flora. Cactus flowers, roses, hibiscus -- all magnificent -- as well as the trees and other non-blooming plants in fantastic containers. Our hosts were very knowledgeable about the history and surrounds of the area. Their welcoming manner and information they provided were invaluable. We urge you not to miss this little bit of paradise.

      Great Stay!!

Left on 02/25/2013 for a stay in January 2013

My wife & I spent a week at Casa Gatos with our 2 college age children. We had been to the akumal area several times before & wanted to return, possibly for the last time, with the family. I picked Casa Gatos based upon the pictures & reviews. It was better! We rented the 3 bedroom townhouse & it was perfect. The kids took the upstairs & my wife & I the downstairs. The garden is beautiful & the weather was perfect. My son is a plant biology major & spent hours with Dan exploring the garden. The property was great! we spent most of our time, at the house, outside with the owners, other guests, & visiting neighbors. Each morning we would have fruit & coffee in the courtyard. We spent our days Scuba diving, exploring Mayan ruins, & local villages. Each day upon our return we would share our stories of the day with our hosts & then get another new recommendation for a great place for dinner. Our time with Dave & Dan was wonderful. The stories of their many years in the Yucatan were greatly appreciated. They all made us feel really welcome. They became like family. We appreciated their advice and their recommendations were invaluable. Don't worry about cat allergies. They are exclusively restricted to the owners apartment. If you are looking for a rental in Mexico we highly recommend Casa Gatos. Beautiful, friendly, & affordable. We seemed to be treated better all throughout akumal as soon as they found out where we were staying. We'll be back! Be a local not a tourist.

      Great location and beautiful accomodations

Left on 02/17/2012 for a stay in February 2012

We stayed a week as 7 adults in 102/103 Casa Gatos. At north end of akumal, although we were not on the water, we were able to walk to the lagoon and to Half Moon Bay, and it was really nice being set back a bit from the steady ocean wind. Some of our group rented bicycles for us$30/week 2 blocks away, and apparently golf carts are available nearby as well. To get to the main akumal Beach for snorkeling a car was handy for us.
We watched sunrise/set over the ocean each day from the rooftop. Upstairs rooms have beautiful mexican tile floors. Throughout, mahogany doors and trim and aC, which we really didn't need because of the ceiling fans and sea breeze . WiFi worked fine. Downstairs bedroom and LR/DR/kitchen have marble/travertine floors-- really beautiful. Fully equipped kitchen complete with coffee bean grinder! Our hosts upon our request arranged for a chef service for 4 nights (us$8-$9/per person per night plus cost of groceries) and we were delighted by the fresh seafood and other traditional Mayan dishes that the groundskeeper Juaquin's brother Jorge and wife Nami made for us. They are great cooks, and this saved $ for us over the akumal restaurants, which mostly seemed to have menus priced like us.
David and Dan, our hosts, who live in the downstairs unit on the other side of the patio, are friendly and welcoming, and patiently answered our many questions. They have a cute little dog who is also friendly but will hide from you if you are wearing a big hat and sunglasses!
