Description from the owner

This is the place you have been looking for: luxury and convenience!

Read any book on Akumal and you will hear of Casa Romero, the first house built on the lagoon, built by a close associate of the founder of Akumal. Once you arrive, you will see why he picked this spot: the best in all Akumal, across from a white sand beach, with the inlet to the lagoon on the right and lagoon on the left, Casa Romero still features direct access to the lagoon and the wonderful views of both the lagoon and the ocean.

Now totally restored and redecorated to maintain its grandeur, you will find three large bedroom suites and truly spacious common...Read more

    Additional Location Information

We are located in the small town of Akumal directly on the Caribbean Ocean in the heart of the beautiful Mexican Riviera Maya. Only 60 miles south of Cancun airport, the town is worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the party towns of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. In fact, it is the only place that retains the old laid-back, relaxed atmosphere that existed before the resorts took over much of the coast.

Akumal has plenty to do with good restaurants, shopping, two beaches, diving, snorkeling and more. It is also ideally located for excursions to Mayan ruins (Tulum, Coba, Chichen-Itza) as well as other beaches, golf, nearby towns (Tulum, Playa del Carmen), tourist attractions (Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Xplor, Hidden Worlds, Achten-Chen), and more.

Our private complex is located directly on Yal Ku lagoon with magnificent snorkeling. With two private entrances, you have free access to the lagoon whenever you want. Because the lagoon has no waves, the snorkeling is ideal for children or inexperienced snorkelers as well as experienced snorkelers. We strongly recommend using vests while snorkeling and provide a variety of sizes from infants to adults.

      Wedding in Paradise

Left on 12/15/2012 for a stay in November 2012

We had the pleasure of staying here for our wedding and hosting our wedding on the property. The accommodations and grounds are absolutely beautiful. We stayed at Casa Romero, Blue Tang and Delfin. It was a perfect setting for a large group and still very intimate. The staff were very friendly and accomidating to our needs. We plan to come back in the near future! Thank-you for making our wedding so memorable.

      Best Vacation (and wedding) ever!

Left on 09/28/2012 for a stay in July 2012

In July 2012, my fiancé and I tied the knot at Casa Romero in akumal. It was better than we could have ever imagined. We wanted something unique (no resort) but with the same amenities that a resort could offer. Casa Romero was perfect! This is a wonderful place to stay for a romantic getaway, a family vacation or reunion, or a wedding! (David even put us in contact with a full service local wedding planner who did an amazing job!)

From the very beginning David and Nancy were amazing, answering every question we had without hesitation. We rented the entire complex for 1 week. (Casa Romero, Blue Tang and French angel). It held all 30 of our guests in their own bed with their own bathroom! We had a private entrance to Yal-Ku lagoon (the public entrance has a fee) and could snorkel there during sunrise and sunset without anyone (There is snorkel gear and life vests at the house). As if that wasn't enough, there are amazing rooftop pools on the smaller houses and a large pool at Casa Romero. We spent the week rotating through each pool; it was awesome!

We had asked David if dinner could be made for our group each night and even though he hadn't done it before, he planned it all out and made it happen for us. It was great to have the whole group together for dinner! Each night around 6pm, Rene (the awesome groundskeeper) would bring the food in hot and fresh, with dessert to top it off! We had maids, a security guard, and golf carts which we rented from a local shop to ride around town.

      I could go on forever,

Thank you David and Nancy Poor!

      Paradise!

Left on 09/28/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Everything about this vacation was magical. From the location to the room to the service. Between the beach and the lagoon (not the mention the awesome food within walking distance) there is no reason to go anywhere else.

      Short, but sweet...exceeded our expectations!!

Left on 06/09/2012 for a stay in May 2012

My husband and three teens made an all too short stop at Casa Romero in May 2012. let me start by saying we had never been to akumal, and feel in love with the area...love it loads more than Tulum. Nancy and David Poor, the owners are some of the most gracious and "real" folks I have met. The house is unusual to say the least!! Special and unique are better words!! Nancy has painstakingly decorated the house (and condos next door) with crazy-good art and hand painted walls. This is not the place for you if you want a brand new, shiny, "take your shoes off so you don't soil the rug" kind of place. This house oozes charm and comfort. It has all the modern conveniences...Vonage phone system so you can get and make calls (huge when in MX)...cable TV with lots of us lisitings..wifi...beautiful modern bathrooms and kitchen. Most important, this house has "a spirit" about it. Please keep in mind that while there are lots of stairs, there is a master on the main floor.
The location may be the best I have ever seen in a beach house...please take the time to look up Ya-Ku Lagoon on Trip advisor so you really get how amazing the view and "back yard" really are. I have been to loads of Caribbean and Mexican beach houses and if I had to return tomorrow I would head directly to Casa Romero (keep in mind it is only about 70 miles south of Cancun airport, passing lots of grocery and supply stores along the way ).

      Our Vacation in Paradise

Left on 10/26/2010 for a stay in February 2010

We spent a week with friends in Casa Romero last spring and definitely preferred our experience in akumal to the commercialism of the resorts closer to Cancun!

The house just oozed romance from the beautiful circular courtyard with its center fountain to the master bedroom and bath with their expansive views of the lagoon. It was wonderful to have our own private access to go snorkeling and also a fresh water infinity pool right off the shaded patio. The kitchen was completely stocked so we cooked in most nights after buying fresh produce at the local farmers' market. The neighborhood is quiet and town is just a nice walk, or bike ride, down the road.

The resident staff, Rene and Lucy, was gracious and efficient keeping the house and grounds immaculate. I lost a stone from my ring and Rene hand-filtered the pool to find it for me!

Thank you David and Nancy for allowing us to share your piece of Paradise! We can hardly wait to return.

A perfectly romantic, relaxing week in paradise.

Left on 10/25/2010 for a stay in November 2009

We discovered paradise south of Cancun in the sleepy village of akumal. We travelled with close friends and stayed at Casa Romero on the Yal-ku Lagoon. The owner, David, was very helpful in making arrangements and the on-site staff was attentive without being in the way.

Casa Romero is a beautiful modern villa and the setting is spectacular. Each day we would rise early and get our "exercise” by walking into town for a wonderful breakfast at Turtle Bay Café. Sometimes we would walk along the white sand beachfront or take a yoga class offered in the town center. Then we would stroll back to the villa and begin actively relaxing.

The principal attraction, Yal-ku Lagoon, is right out the back door. Yal-ku is like snorkeling in a National aquarium. There are just too many fish and fish types to describe here. But, when you go, keep your eyes out for the "Painted Ladies,” two large, rainbow colored, parrotfish living in the lagoon. We found ourselves spending hours floating together on the surface, hand-in-hand, enjoying the view and pointing out each wonderful discovery we shared together.

Leaving the lagoon, we would make lunch and choose to either read next to the lagoon or enjoy a cool breeze on the balcony. Afternoon activities usually consisted of eating, drinking, reading, resting, napping and repeating these as needed. Toward evening, we would gather in the pool and drink a toast the majestic sunset.

For dinner, we would cook for ourselves in the modern kitchen or, with enough notice, the caretakers would cook a meal for us. Nearby, there were many restaurants to choose from, but our favorites were La Buena Vida and Lolha. There we shared dinner, drinks and memories with old and new friends.

The days at Casa Romero passed at a casual pace and we were completely stress free the entire time. Our only regret was that time had to pass at all. When we returned to reality, we immediately began planning our next escape to paradise in akumal.

Casa Romero was a beautiful and unforgettable vacation home. The master bedroom had huge floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lagoon. The house had its own access to the lagoon. And the pool was perfect!

I have been to akumal before. The area is spectacular. This house at the junction of the lagoon and the ocean is truly extraordinary. The space is clean and the staff exceptionally responsive to any request. Convenient to the beach and restaurants, it is also private and quiet. Great place; great vacation.

      Casa Romero is breathtaking

Left on 10/18/2010 for a stay in November 2008

This villa is a cut above anything else I've ever stayed in, and we intend to come back. The house is spectacularly beautiful, on a snorkelling lagoon, with a swimming pool and all the luxuries. The service is superb and the location is perfect. This one's on the a list.

Married in Paradise - A week at Casa Romero

Left on 10/13/2010 for a stay in July 2010

From June 26 - July 6 we stayed in Mexico, with the last 7 days being at Casa Romero. My parents rented Casa Romero, my fiance's parents rented Casa Delfin and we also had French angel 1 and 2 to house the rest of our guests. Can I just say...having our wedding week and wedding at Casa Romero (and the whole compound) was absolutely perfect.

Will start with Casa Romero (pre-wedding)
      - The house its self is gorgeous. Interior is perfect, all of the amenities you'd ever need - plus housekeeping to keep everything perfect for you. The rooms are big, clean, and comfortable.
      - The tower is absolutely perfect for sitting out at teh end of the day, enjoying the breeze and a beverage (oh and there's a small fridge up there so you don't need to haul drinks up and down so frequently - remember, it's vacation - the less work, the better!)
      - The pool was the perfect temperature, also big enough to play in - they had some leftover pool toys and we brought some (and then left for the next folks to use) - spent a lot of time in there. The little waterfall was great - lots of tropical birds would fly down to take a quick bath.
      - Great deck area for eating meals outside - plenty of room for everyone.
      - The view from the house is even better than pictures present.

      The Lagoon:
      - Hello perfect snorkelling. Yes some days had better visibility than others but, the water temperature was pefect - we saw turtles, rays, tons of fish. Oh and the other folks who use the lagoon have to pay. Not so when you stay at Casa Romero. Plus - they shut the public lagoon access off during certain hours - so you get morning and evening snorkeling to yourself.

      French angel 1 & 2 -
      - Perfect for our extra guests. Still had plenty of room - seriously teh rooms are huge, once again all of teh amenities that you'd need.
      - roof top pools. The best invention ever. Cannot count the hours we spent at night sitting and playing in those pools while looking at the stars. Perfection.

      Location:
      - Yes the drive in is on a somewhat run down road - but no worries. Once you pull up to Casa Romero - you're all set. There's a small grocery store nearby, and some restaruants in akumal which are very nice. On teh way into akumal we did stop at Sams Club to pick up supplies for th eweek - plenty of refrigerator and freezer space for everything.

      Wedding detials:
      - We used Jen Smith of the Turtle Bay Cafe for our wedding planning, catering, everything. Best money we spent. She organized everything, knows everyone, and pretty much everyone that came to our wedding said it was the best wedding best food and seriously her cake is out of this world.
      - Location: we used the lawn on the lagoon for the ceremony - perfect. Then used the lawn in front of French angel for the cocktail hour and the area around the fountain for the reception. Unfortunatley it rained that night (but really ended up being a blessing, as it was hot out) and we had to move inside for dancing. however - teh great room in Casa Romero was definitely large enough to accommodate all of our guests.

100% recommend all of the properties to anyone who would be wanting to stay! The groundskeepers are super nice and willing to help with anything and the owners are very helpful as well!

      The best vacation...ever!

Left on 10/12/2010 for a stay in October 2009

We have been going each year, (and sometimes 2-3 times per year) to Mexico since our honeymoon in 1989. The first few years we stayed in the hotel zone. Then we started staying in the mega-resorts (all inclusive). The megas were just too big, and too many people. The last few years we have been staying in Tulum, and Soloman Bay. Akumal, and Casa Romero has been our best trip yet! Just after a couple of days, we felt quite "at home" in the house. We spent a lot of time in the well equipped kitchen, and, on the 3rd floor balcony, relaxing and looking out into the lagoon and gulf. Of course the pool and the lagoon were great! We love to snorkle, and the water, the great visibility, and fish were the perfect way to start, and end the day. After a couple of days, my husband John, really got a little cabin fever, but the sat. tv and dvd saved the day. This a a very friendly, and safe, area. Good places to go out and eat, explore, etc. The last few years we have been vacationing with another couple from Texas, the Greens, and they loved Romero just as much as we did. We will be back!

      Beautiful Home

Left on 10/12/2010 for a stay in March 2009

Casa Romero is a beautiful home, very thoughtful with lovely decor and special art pieces making it a wonderful living space. Of course we love the pool, and the lagoon and the views from the home, the privacy and the very nice staff looking after us. The setting of the home and the community of akumal are very mellow. We visited two very nice restaurants a couple of times. The only criticism of the home is the slippery, hard tile floors, especially next to the pool and the shower. Two of us slipped and fell, and we finally solved the problem by laying down beach towels coming out of the pool. Thanks to everyone - Martha & Steve
