Description from the owner
The Alpine Studio is located downtown on historic Murphy Street (and 25 minutes from Marfa:), within easy walking distance of everything in Alpine, 1/2 block south of the Amtrak station (there is some occasional train noise so I supply individually wrapped earplugs for sensitive sleepers:). The Holland Hotel is 2 blocks away (nicest hotel in town) and they provide the same for their hotel guests. Murphy Street was Alpine's main street in some of it's earliest years as "Murphyville."
The Alpine Studio is located next door to several fun shops and restaurants where you can dine on tasty mexican food (JalapeƱos), enjoy delicious coffee/in...ternet and slurp icy "raspas" (Raspa Co.) and shop for gifts and treasures (Brown Dog Gardens, Patti Hildreth Studio).
The Studio is a 2 bedroom/1 bath with fully stocked kitchen (mini fridge/toaster oven/microwave/hot plate). The futon is full size with soft sheets and a light down comforter (nights are chilly in the high desert). There is an additional twin bed in an adjoining room separated by curtains. We also keep a 5 inch memory foam mattress rolled up in a blue rolling suitcase with a twin sheet on it for the hardy camper/floor sleeper/additional body. It's quite comfy :) There are 2 entrance doors into each "bedroom." The place is incredibly well located for exploring on foot.
Holland Street is one block north of Murphy Street and it is the "other" main street (on the north side of the "tracks": Amtrak)
Holland Street boasts: The Saddle Club (lovely bar and tapas/4 blocks away), the Reata restaurant (upscale: 4 blocks), the world famous Railroad Blues honky tonk pub/music venue (4 blocks),the Rangra movie theatre (2 blocks), several art galleries/fabulous shops (Ivey's, Kiowa Gallery, "yours truly" at Galeria Sibley) and locally owned Front Street Books/PLAINE coffee shop (wonderful homemade pastries/cappucinos).
Sul Ross State University is about 12 blocks east on Holland, next door to our fave Italian restaurant , La Trattoria (great pizzas, pasta and sandwiches/family owned). Sul Ross has a great Museum of the Big Bend and a huge indoor salt water pool that is open to the public. There are also some great hiking trails behind the university that give you an amazing 360 view of the country (15-20 minutes up). There is a "desk" on the top of Sul Ross Hill that has a notebook in it to record your ruminations - fun activity!
The skies in our country are unfathomably clear and beautiful so make sure to schedule a Star Gazing party at McDonald's Observatory in Fort Davis about 45 minutes away. The historic Fort is also a lovely spot, as is Davis Mountains State Park and the neighboring Balmorhea State Park with one of the largest spring-fed swimming pools in Texas (with great cabins you can overnight in thru Texas Parks and Wildlife:)
Alpine is located at "the hub of the wheel" and the neighboring communities of Marfa (west/huge minimalist art scene - Donald Judd/Chinati/Ballroom Marfa), Marathon (east/Gage Hotel), Fort Davis (north) are approx 30 minutes away in any given direction.
Big Bend National and StateParks/the Mexican border are 1 hour south. (Terlingua Ghost Town boasts the Starlight Theatre/Restuarant, Desert Sports runs river trips/biking trips: great folk, Lajitas Resort is "lovely.")
Big Bend Ranch State Park tends not to be as busy as BBNP and has a wonderful (and cheap) bunkhouse for accommodations OR the old adobe ranch headquarters that is dreamy. Great camping, hiking, biking etc..The Solitario region is awesome and one of our fave spots.
Other:
Blue Water Grocery Store for organic food on Hwy 118 south.
Saturdays: Farmer's Market is literally 4 doors down from the Alpine Studio in the old Ritchey adobe Hotel (that is currently being restored).
Regina's for mani/pedi and Aveda Salon for hair
Call/email me with any questions.
"Neighbor Nancy" has Brown Dog Gardens next door and is your "go to person" if you have any immediate needs when here or I am a text away :)
Art work in Studio is by Woody Farris (Fredericksburg), Lizanne Thate (Austin), Matt Skinner of Alpine/Austin/Co. We have more of their "stuff" at Galeria Sibley.

Additional Location Information
The Alpine Studio is on Historic Murphy Street, 1 block south of Holland Avenue (Main Street in Alpine). Alpine is "the hub of the wheel:" 25 minutes east of Marfa, 25 minutes south of Fort Davis, 25 minutes west of Marathon and 1 hour north of Big Bend National Park and Study Butte/Lajitas resort and the Terlingua Ghost Town.
Parking is easy - right in front of your door on the street. It's VERY "small town" safe:)
Everything is "turn key" and "low key." Key is in the lock box (i give you the code upon booking) by the mailbox - please remember to put it back :) There is a flashlight in the mailbox in case you get in after dark.
Futon is full size...2nd bed is a twin. There is a memory foam twin mattress in a blue rolling suitcase with a twin sheet on it for "hardier" floor sleepers.
Plug in the water heater to the wall in the kitchen if you need hot water for dishes (we conserve energy by unplugging it when not in use:) We also unplug the bathroom hot water heater. Simply plug in on arrival and wait 15 minutes.
Ask Neighbor Nancy any questions (Brown Dog Gallery next door - she lives there:) and text/call me at (phone: hidden) with anything also. Hiram is also available at (phone: hidden).
