Alvor, Algarve, Portugal
Additional Location Information
The historic port of ALVOR briefly achieved fame as the place where Dom João II died in 1495 and, though much of the town was razed in the 1755 earthquake, it still boasts a sixteenth-century Igreja Matriz with Manueline doors, arches and pillars carved into fishing ropes and plants. It remained a sleepy fishing village until the 1960s, when tourism began to take hold, and today the old town has been outgrown by a sprawl of modern – though largely low-rise – buildings. Nevertheless, the old core around the church and the central Praça da República retains its character, while the harbour is a delight, lined with colourful fishing boats and aromatic fish restaurants.
Algarve (from the Moorish words for “The West”) referred to the extremity of the 8th, 9th and 10th. Century Islamic Empire, that is the Southernmost part of Portugal. It is the South facing coastal area stretching some 120 miles from Spain in the East to Sagres, the South Western extremity of Europe, in the West. With an average of three thousand hours of sunshine every year the Summers are long, warm and dry and, although the Winter night temperatures can occasionally drop to freezing the following day can see the temperature climb to a comfortable temperature for al fresco dining. Winter is usually much shorter and less severe than in Northern Europe while Spring usually arrives by the end of January (certainly before Valentine’s Day!) heralded by masses of pink and white almond blossom.
Around half of the visitors to the Algarve come from Northern Portugal with the remainder from Northern Europe. All are attracted by the mildness of the climate while the extensive golden, sandy beaches and the pretty coves with red cliffs which have been eroded by the wind and the waves; attract artists at all times of the year.
