My husband and I, along with my sister and brother-in-law spent a wonderful week in amber Villa at La Perla del Caribe. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had. The accomodations were great - we especially loved the large walk-in showers in each bath. Both bedrooms have their own screen porch overlooking the beautiful Caribbean - one furnished with a loveseat and chair and the other a large hammock. Great for relaxing while enjoying the wonderful sea breezes.
The staff was helpful and very accommodating. They were extremely helpful in booking our excursions - snorkeling and a trip to the Mayan ruins at Laminai on mainland Belize.
We enjoyed the remoteness of La Perla, but traveling to San Pedro by water taxi frequently can get a bit expensive - $22 round/trip. I would definitely look into a weekly pass, which we didn't know about until too late into our stay. We did enjoy dinner in San Pedro at Caliente, but our favorite restaurant was Mambo which was just a short walk along the beach from our villa. We also enjoyed dinners at Mojo, Portofina, and Jambel's. All within walking distance!
As is the case everywhere on ambergris Caye, sea grass does grow in the water along the shoreline. The staff was ever deligent to keep the grass that washed ashore cleared for us during our stay. We enjoyed having a beach totally to ourselves!
We didn't find mosquitos to be a problem at all. We brought along repellant, but never had to use it. -

Los Angeles, CaliforniaLa Perla del Caribe - Ambergris Caye - Fantastic
Left on 07/13/2011 for a stay in July 2011
We loved this place.
Our family of 3 stayed at La Perla del Caribe (Amber Villa) for 10 days and had a sensational experience. The houses are so beautifully appointed. Large beautiful rooms with great taste in chachkis and decor. Fully stocked with all necessary kitchen stuff. Had a TV (full range of channels) which we never turned on except when we got there to check it. We did need internet and the signal was sketchy but the staff was quick to try to fix when it went out.
Amanda and Rene and Beth were all wonderful.
A few tips for visitors:
1) Do not use Lagniappe grocer delivery, which is suggested by La Perla before you travel. You get the impression you will have no access to food if you don't do this. You fill out an online form and they deliver so your house is stocked when you get there. It is way over priced, and way unecsessary. And they charge a steep delivery fee and they substitute items and they have your credit card so you have no choices.
It's one way to go. But there is a market about 15 minutes walk from La Perla called Mata Grande. It's tiny, but you can buy basic staples and beer and wine there. And they deliver for free. In San Pedro you can also shop at larger stores and they will also deliver.
Our suggestion - we brought a suitcase full of food - cheeses, salamis, crackers, tapenades, coffee, etc. all non-perishable, so all we needed as perishables, and drinks.
2) Do not let the housekeepers do your laundry. Our sweet Vanessa (whose house had burned down only days before... so we really wanted to help her) offered to do our laundry. We realized things were missing while we were there and upon our return, realized that all of our clothes she'd laundered were stained and ruined. They have a washer and dryer right behind your villa - do it yourself!
3) If you want to go on an excursion and they need to collect enough people to justify the trip - solicit and ask other guests (even at other resorts) yourself. We wanted to go to altun Han (sp?) - a boat trip through the canopied jungle to Mayan ruins - a 4 hour journey that our 3 year old could handle and love. Though we were there 10 days, they couldn't find 4 other people to do it. Two days before we left, we mentioned it to other guests who'd just arrived and they would love to have gone. But it was too late. This is not a comment on the efficiency of La Perla at all! They are wonderful and they work very hard at accommodating your every need. Marco, who organizes trips, is also great. But, in short, if you're not getting to do something you want to do - seek it yourself.
4) Although it is tempting to just stay at La Perla, take out he kyack and relax at the pool - do go into San Pedro. Spend time sitting on the beach and watching the kids jump off the pier. Enjoy the locals and the tourists. Walk the streets.
And eat at Caliente and Blue Water Grill. Grilled Lobster for $25 USD.
Don't get the garlic butter sauce - it's thick and goopy - get it grilled. Period. Or dip in butter - but don't let them drown this exquisite lobster and snapper in sauce that ruins the simplicity.
5) On Saturday and Sunday - at Mata Grande (yes the tiny market) there is an outdoor bbq of lobster ($12 USD) and chicken with rice and vegetables. If it's not too hot and the flies aren't too miserable - it's fantastic.
6) Take Strong Mosquito Repellent. It is very expensive there and you will need it (and good sunscreen) all the time. Not trying to paint a scary picture - they're not that bad - but it's a reality and it's best to come prepared.
Also bring a bite soother - or itch soother - wish we had.
7) Do the Hol Chan (sp?) snorkeling thing. And don't be afraid of "shark ray alley"
Yes there are sharks. Enormous ones. Yes there are sting rays. enormous ones. And it's amazing. And safe. And glorious.
Mostly enjoy this spectacular incredible place. And people.
We are definitely going back. Probably with family or friends. Love this country - this island - the staff - this place.
