      Excellently located lake district retreat

Left on 04/06/2013 for a stay in March 2013

Ideally located in the heart of ambleside, ideal for walkers wanting easy access to the peaks, whilst remaining in walking distances for restaurants, bars, shops and cinema. I was worried with it being right in the center it might be quite noisy at night, but it was quiet (it was March and freezing though). As with all ambleside town centre properties their is a slight parking issue, the drive is shared & occasionally blocked by the neighbouring B & B. We were their for a week in March and had minimal problems though and it wouldn't put me off returning to the property. The cottage is well equipped, with everything you could want in the kitchen. It doesn't have a hair dryer, the built in DVD player didn't always work and the sofa is uncomfortable if you wanted to spend hours on it, but that is about the only negative I would give it. The property is well heated and there is instant hot water. There is a reasonable chance that I would return to this property out of peak season

      Interesting week in ambleside

Left on 10/19/2012 for a stay in September 2012

The flat is ideally situated in the centre of the town for the pubs, shops, restaurants etc, and also to be able to undertake walks without using any transport. Note however that the that town centre can get noisy on Friday & Saturday nights after late night opening of pubs & clubs.

It is reasonably equipped and would be best for a couple, the water pressure in the flat is excellent and the shower is phenomenal !, the advertised WiFi is pathetic and virtually unusable, we managed to log onto an alternative BT network which worked okay. In my opinion it should not be advertised as being equipped with WiFi.

Parking is very tight, there appears to be an allocated open garage space connected to the flat, this was occupied by another vehicle on our arrival and the Manager said he would park my car for me later when it became free, I was reluctant to allow this but had no alternative. Whilst parking my car the Manager damaged it, I am still trying to get nearly £500 needed for the repair from him after nearly 2 months. My advice is to make sure you do not allow anyone to park or move your vehicle at this property.
I would not use this property again for this reason.

      The Retreat September 2012

Left on 09/27/2012 for a stay in September 2012

Vary Clean and bright. Good size rooms. could be firmer.Parking is not described clearly in advert as it is shared with employees as cafe and guest house and local business but with chats with the other parties did not cause any problem. Wireless Broadband using an Ipad did not work in the apartment. By standing outside the back of the cafe a signal was reasonable. Owners pointed out some repairs that needed to be carried out when we got there eg the fridge needed a bracket as it had not been fitted at installation. Location is great very central and close to restaurants etc. Would stay at the Retreat again

Fantastic holiday - home from home

Left on 07/18/2012 for a stay in June 2012

We had an absolutely fantastic time staying in "The Retreat". Extremely well equipped and comfortable. The location was perfect and everything was so easily accessible. The staff and owners of the adjacent business and of "The Retreat" could not have been friendly or more welcoming. We cannot wait to return for another holiday here and would highly recommend to anyone.

This property doesn't have reliable wifi or parking

Left on 05/21/2012 for a stay in May 2012

It is the upper floor of a small building in the centre of the town. The apartment includes a L shaped kitchen/dining/lounge, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom all up a narrow semi spiral staircase. There is a small area downstairs (including enough space for our large suitcase) and an outer area with the washing machine and dryer but this outer area is also used by people in the shops nearby - very weird. No directions for using the washing machine or dryer. Might be ok for visitors used to using front loading machines but I had never used one until I arrived in Europe 5 weeks ago. The kitchen has all the basics - fridge, oven, cooktop, dishwasher and microwave but has gaps in its range of utensils, crockery, etc and most notably no sharp knife. Main bedroom is small and bed is old and way too soft for our liking. Someone was parked in our parking spot and when we spoke to the owners, they have advised us that there are having ongoing problems. We aren't impressed. Wifi access is also very dodgy, to say the least. We could get a weak signal (maybe) during the day but at night, which is when we mainly wanted to use it, we had to go and stand under the eaves of the building that actually contained the hub. Given that the primary reason for choosing this apartment was the wifi, we were very disappointed and felt it was false advertising given that the hub wasn't even in the apartment.

      Enjoyed our stay

Left on 04/26/2012 for a stay in March 2012

Well equipped house which was nice & clean. Stayed there with my husband & 8 year old daughter & there are plenty of activities in the area. Can thoroughly recommend activity centre at Keswick where we did indoor rock climbing & archery also there is a lovely swimming pool at Keswick. The only downside was that the parking was sometimes a problem as it is a small courtyard & there are other cars parked there from the cafe & guest house. Also the ground floor of The Retreat has the cafe storeroom so they let themselves in the outside door whenever they want, one night it was 10 o'clock when it sounded like someone was breaking in! Obviously you have a key to lock the inner door as well but i would prefer not to be disturbed. On the plus side the owners were very welcoming & took time to chat & the cooked breakfast on the last morning was delicious.

      Amazing ambleside

Left on 09/04/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Amazing ambleside decribes this holiday beautifully! The apartment was superb; very clean and in a perfect location in the town.
The property is approx three years old and is nicely furnished and well equipped. There is car parking, which once navigated proved to be a god send - especially when packing and unpacking.
The public transport is excellent and the open top buses stop at the end of the road which can take you to Grasmere amongst other places.
Nearby attractions which are a must are Hill Top (home of Beatrix Potter) and Dove Cottage (home of William Wordsworth) plus trips on Windermere, Coniston and Ullswater.
The owners of The Retreat were very helpful and accomodating offering a free cooked breakfast on the day of departure. Excellent.

      Good Base in Central ambleside

Left on 08/21/2011 for a stay in May 2011

My wife and our daugther stayed here for 4 days in early May. Flat is well located in central ambleside down a quite backstreet. It is well kitted out and realtively spacious. The kitchen had most of things that were needed and there are a couple of good resturants very close by (Fellini's and Lucy's on a plate). The couple that own the property were very welcoming and helpful. The only complaint was that the shower was broken when we arrived as the owners were waiting for a part. They managed a tempory repair but it broke again by the time we left. The flat was very good value and we really enjoyed our stay.
