Beachmere, AustraliaJust as perfect second time round
Left on 03/13/2013 for a stay in March 2013
This is our second stay at the Kampung with friends and we love it just as much as last time. It is situated right on the beach at Bunutan with local fishing boats pulled up from the tide and almost touching the boundary of the Kampung, which means that there is delightful interaction with the fishermen and their children.
The Kampung that we are staying in has three joglos - wooden houses from Java - each with a king bed and outdoor bathroom, then there's an open-sided living area with 3 daybeds for lounging and a large wooden dining table that will seat 8 comfortably. Everything is antique and beautiful.
The wonderful staff are so friendly and obliging. They will cook every meal for you and only charge for ingredients - you can choose from local, western or recipes in a cookery book.
The swimming pool is free form and situated close to the beach and sparkling clean. If you feel like a paddle, there is a surf ski you can use
There is great snorkelling just 50 metres down the beach. The beach is black sand with large grey stones along the high tide line, but at the moment is quite clean.
I highly recommend a stay at the Kampung - it is just an oasis of peace and quiet - we love it. -

Los Angeles, CABeautiful retreat!
Left on 02/06/2013 for a stay in January 2013
This place is amazing. The attention to the architectural detail by the owners is stunning. The staff was beyond anything I've ever experienced before. So nice - they really made you feel welcome. Loved swimming in the pool everyday. Started each day with breakfast (served by the fantastic staff) on the outdoor patio. Read a book. Work on the tan. It was easy to rent a motor scooter and explore the area. Great restaurants nearby but even better, the staff will cook your meals for you. Just tell them what you want. Will definitely go back. Some day. It's a long way from la! The drive from Seminyak long. But worth it. So nice to get away from the bustle of city.

6 reasons to come to the east coast of Bali (rather than the touristy areas near the airport):
1). Support the relatively poor fishermen and farmers in the villages on the coast. They do double duty as drivers, cooks, maids, masseuse, tour guides for scuba/snorkeling/fishing...and they do it well, with a huge friendly smile, because they are greatful that you are supporting their village (Amed).
2). The accommodations are fabulous (at Villa Kampung) and oh, so reasonable. Our own pool, wi-fi, AC at night, sea kayak, concierge, two lovely maids, one cook, night time security.
3). Local drivers who will take you wherever you want to go and talk to about their love of Bali...and get you back in one piece (so far).
4). Home cooked Balinese or Indonesian dishes (you get to call the amount of hot chilis!)
5). Some of the best snorkeling in the world right out front and down in the next bay around the bend.
6). And a $10 massage by your pool at sunset, waves lapping at the beach, nice breeze, no humidity, by tiny hands that are very powerful and full of genuine concern for your comfort and relaxation.
On the downside...it does take a long time to get here from the airport (3 hours) and the trip is not for the faint of heart! Rush hour (i.e. All the time) on tiny two lane roads, loaded with small trucks and motorbikes, none of whom (including our driver) have much concern for traffic rules (if they even exist here!) Yikes! But it's a small price to pay for the experience at Villa Kampung (and it gives us a good story to tell!)
Have I made my case?!

Beachmere AustraliaPerfect in every way
Left on 10/24/2012 for a stay in September 2012
We stayed for 3 nights at the Kampung in the village of Bunutan and wish we were still there being pampered by the special staff in paradise.
On arrival we were met by Wayan and some of the ladies who whisked our luggage away and presented us with cool refreshing towels and a welcome lemon juice drink; from that moment on nothing was too much trouble for the staff and our every need was looked after.
We were in Kampung Limas, which is the larger of the two 'kampungs', consisting of three javanese joglos - the two that we used each had an enormous king-size++ bed and a double daybed, both with mozzie nets, writing table with chair, wardrobe, bedside tables and a huge outdoor bathroom with shower complete with shampoo, conditioner, bath gel etc.
In addition there is an open-sided pavilion, close to the pool and the beach, with another three daybeds, dining table and chairs where we spent a good part of the day.
Another seperate building housed the kitchen and was the domain of Made - the balinese lady who cooked all our meals for us, just for the cost of the ingredients. We discussed the menu the day before and at the alloted time a wondrous meal would be set in front of us - a real treat not to have to leave the kampung to find food!
Everything was sparkling clean and well maintained.
The Kampung is built right at the top of the beach, which is of the black stone variety - not the easiest to walk on, but doable. We found good coral for snorkeling just 50 metres down the beach and the sea was very safe for swimming.
We would thoroughly recommend an extended stay at the Kampung and intend to visit again very soon. -

CairnsUnforgettable... for all the right reasons
Left on 10/10/2012 for a stay in September 2012
From the moment we arrived at the entrance to the Kampung we knew our stay would be special. The staff greeted us with friendly waves and helped us settle in to our accommodation - it took a few moments for the reality that all three sleeping compounds were for our exclusive use as well as the dining area and swimming pool.
The sleeping quarters were exceptional and were furnished very tastefully. The outdoor bathrooms are large and show a very keen eye for design - we have been inspired to take some of these ideas back to our own home.
The food which was prepared fresh each day was nothing short of delicious and Made and her team catered to us so well that the desire to dine elsewhere rarely came up.
The staff were so friendly, informative and efficient - we miss them and feel like they are a part of our family in Bali.
We enjoyed using the kayak to paddle out and over the nearby coral gardens and this along with relaxing by the pool was the most energetic we had to be most days.
We have no hesitation in recommending this accommodation to visitors and had great dealings prior to travel with the owner who always responded in a timely and detailed fashion.
Can't wait to visit again next year.

Our family of 5 adults and one 2 1/2 years old stayed for 10 days at 'The Kampung' and each and everyone of them was bliss. The accommodation was perfect, traditional villa with a/C, front verandahs to lounge on and look out to sea. You get your own self contained compound with sleeping accommodation, kitchen, eating area, swimming pool and gardens.
Ever single member of the staff were the nicest, friendliest people you could ever want to meet and they took such wonderful care of us. Made's cooking was fabulous so much so they we only ate out twice, it was hard to beat her dishes.
Have travelled the world and amed is one of those special places, as is The Kampung. You can do a lot or a little as you want depending on your mood.
Family members went diving and snorkelling and thoroughly enjoyed it. -

We were fortunate enough to spend a month in Bali and our 5 days here were by far the best. Other than diving and constant trips to the cow across the road with my 2 year old, we didn't leave. The staff cooked amazing meals and helped to entertain the kids and we relaxed, read and swam, swam, swam. There furniture and decor is beautiful and the pool and gardens are stunning. We stayed here with my mum and her partner and my 2 small kids. It was great we could all be together yet have our own space too. Can't wait to come back!

We found this place when looking for somewhere to stay in Bali. For 6 of us (3 couples) this worked out extremely well. We had some inside knowledge and didn't want the bustle of Kuta. This self catering compound offers outstanding value in comfort and location, with staff who cook like angels (Indonesian food). Getting around is not easy from here but the staff helped by arranging collection from the airport and a car when we needed one. Returning after a day out in Ubud or a dive at Tulamben is like going home. We tried some expensive restaurants but could not better the food we had at "home" and at a quarter of the price. I have no hesitation in recommending this to any one looking for a relaxing holiday in Bali.

We chanced upon The Kampung while looking for accommodation in amed and after visiting several properties, decided it was the best that was on offer there!! The property is set betwixt rice fields and the sea was new and very well-maintained, with a fantastic little pool right on the waterfront, where we bought fish off the fishermen's long-tail boats that came in every evening.
The joglos were in classic balinese style and well-appointed, with a really comfortable bed we fell asleep in to the sound of the waves and a gorgeous outdoor bathroom for showers under the skies.
The best part of our stay were the incredible staff!! Wayan, the property manager, and Made, the cook, were especially accommodating - taking care of all our requests and whims, even sourcing coconut husks we wanted for our bbq. Made cooked the most scrumptious balinese cuisine with perfectly balanced but exciting flavours, using all organic and free-range produce. Her chicken bubur in the morning was a personal favourite which was perfectly complimented with her home-made sambal terasi...yummm!
Amed is a sleepy village, where the locals are still very simple and there are very few modern conveniences. Do not expect supermarkets with a variety of products found in many other parts of Bali - there are only the barest basic available in amed, so do stock up if you require anything and bring books and Dvds if u need entertainment. This quality about amed actually made it extra precious to us as it really was reminiscent of Bali years ago. Be sure to try the local street food like ikan pepes and satay babi which are incredibly well-flavoured and some of the most exceptional i've tasted on the island!
I would definitely recommend a stay at The Kampung to anyone and sure you will have an unforgettable time!!

From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave that "Aaaah!" feeling doesnt leave you. My friend said at first* "Is this all ours" as yes the name of the place "the kampung" does this piece of paradise justice, yuo book a villa and you get a whole village! Kamoung is Indonesian for village. The cute javanese huts are not only beautifully selected but perfectly placed and comfortably furnished! just feeling at home in the village and all day looking out across the ocean, its breathtaking. The pool seems to be meters form the ocean and one wonders if the waves will bounce you to sleep, literally. The staff is so well trained and just so lovely .. there when you need them and they magically disappear when you need privacy. If you like Indonesian cuisine, you dont have to move! Altough there are great restaurants just in vicinity, we opted to just never even set a foot in front of the door, we lazed by the pool, in the ocean or on one of the comfortable sofas or chairs all day ... why move ... if paradise found. I highly recommend to everyone, from young to old, I cant see anyone getting bored not turn their backs as this one got it all! Congratulations to the owners and management to creating... as I said .. heaven on earth!

Left on 03/29/2012 for a stay in March 2012
My wife and I spend our 10th anniversary at here and its was pretty well perfect. We loved the privacy and quiet and the cool very comfortable traditional houses, antiques and Persian carpets. The staff were really friendly and helpful and the view is good as well. We spent our days beach combing, taking long walks and sitting by the pool watching the fishermen bring home the morning catch.
There is a market and restaurants close by, so you really don't need a car, but I would recommend you buy imported food products like wine and stuff in south Bali before you head up.
My wife says I should mention that the rates we very reasonable too.
All in all, a nice escape from the noise and traffic in Kuta and Seminyak and an experience of the "real Bali". -

We stayed in the kampung over Xmas for 4 nights. We had a fabulous time. The accomodation was excellent (comfortable large beds with fine linen), the gardens were beautifully maintained and the location was perfect (the pool was situated meters from the beach). Importantly the staff were friendly, attentive and great with my 2year old son. We would love to return.

187290Rent a village!
Left on 02/03/2012 for a stay in December 2011
If you’ve ever thought about renting your own village, do it at Kampung: Malayan and Indonesian for ‘village’, Kampung is a great alternative to Bali’s common (often wannabe stylish) accommodations. Here you’ll find rebuild traditional Javan wooden Houses mainly restored and equipped with antique materials and furniture. Two units at all, each of which embedded in a little garden, with modern kitchen retailer including private cooks and security staff, fantastic wide-open and very huge lounge room, two respectively three detached main houses, pool and yoga tower – all exlusively just for you. Designed for families, friends or small groups, this private beachfront lodging is also rentable for couples for a very attractive walk in rate, fractional amount compared to published rates. Staff, mostly Locals, is on site anyway and you’ll pay on top just ingredients for dinner if you wish to have. Main houses are built on stilts and covered with floorboards, traditional airing make the super silent aircon redundant. Each house comes with pleasant shady sleeping rooms equipped with comfy and spotless clean canopy beds, all with huge and sober open air bath-terrace. Standard-stuffy styled Pool is located straight at the rocky beach, not yet fully-grown palms don’t provide shade. Swimming and snorkling options are limited, bring swim shoes or lots of scarf-skin. Back from the ocean, thankfully Kampung is without TV or WiFi. Therefore Bikes, books or a xylophone invite to be active or wind down. After all that vacation stress, most problematic is to decide where to relax later in approximately eight or so ultra cozy settees. Once in it, take a look across Wallace Line and try to beam yourself in Kampungs reproduced luxury setting into an Indonesia which is lost long ago in Bali’s mass-tourism. Accordingly the environment is a penalty: Even in low season, the ‘quiet’ Amed area appears very jam-packed as the entire island. Neither dreambeaches nor paradisal backcountry. Result: Itself a unique and a stunning accommodation, this Kampung somewhere else perhaps at the great beaches of Bali’s gorgeous and authentic Neighbors Lombok or Flores would be a perfect place.
