The house is located in a very nice location. The steps in the house is one of the negative thing. The bedrooms and the bathrooms were big enough and clean. The livingrooom at the entrance was small

The house is very conveniently located, walking distance from all major attractions in this amazing city, and close to restaurants, bars, supermarket and Central station.
The property is well kept and though the famous staircase is very narrow, it is not unmanageable at all and very much worth using. We left all the luggage in the living room and used it as a very large walk in closet to avoid carrying the bags up and down the stairs. Worked fine for us.
Beds are comfortable, sheets and towels provided are of good quality and clean. The sofa bed in the living room is comfortable for a tall adult.
Bathrooms are new and clean, nice hot water and the jacuzzi in the top floor a welcome treat for tired souls!
The kitchen is comfortable but could use a deep scrub... as one other guest mentioned, the house is evidently decorated and kept by men, and it shows!
If you are over 1 meter 90, be careful when you move around in the kitchen, the roof is very close to the floor!
The coffeshop in the corner was absolutely no discomfort at all.
All in all, the experience of staying in a "real" house in amsterdam was great, and will surely repeat it next time we decide to jump over... -

We spent 6 nights at the amnesia Canal House. Lovely house and location.
I especially loved the basin kitchen which looked out upon the street.
The staircases were very steep but after a day or two no more problems. My husband decided to take the bedroom on the first floor and the girls one flight of stairs higher.
Next year my husband and I are going back to amsterdam and certainly rent another City apartment again. -

Overall we were quite happy with this apartment. We felt a bit odd renting a whole place like this for two people, but it was comparable in price to other properties we were looking at that were single bedroom apartments and for a week-long stay it's nice to spread out. It's a really nice size, although until you see it, you really don't quite understand how narrow the building is - but that's a canal house - build up! Don't worry about the stairs unless you have issues with climbing stairs (and you will climb lots of stairs - every room is basically on it's own level - from the bottom up, kitchen, living room, bedroom, bedroom, jacuzzi room/laundry).
We opted to pay for the pick-up and drop-off service. This was well worth it. The gentleman (Adriaan) that greeted us and then saw us off was friendly and very helpful. I wish I had found more of his type while staying there.
The location is excellent. The area is fairly quiet (mostly residential - see exceptions below). There is a sort of low-key restaurant and bar area a few blocks south of the apartment, and a tram is less than 10 minutes away (buy tickets at the train station when you get in to town). The tram literally goes everywhere. On foot, there are a few shopping districts, both "local" and touristy. The red-light area is walkable, as is the city center and the train station. I found myself walking quite a bit since it's a pretty hassle-free way to get around and the city is just not that huge. There are two small supermarkets nearby (10 minutes or so) if you're cooking in. Amazing Belgian beers are priced like Budweiser is in the us there. Do keep in mind you are staying in a fairly upscale neighborhood - things close by are relatively expensive - think SoHo in NYC. You will not be rubbing elbows with the average blue-collar guy at the local bar. You might see this as a positive or a negative. :)
Kitchen is stocked with what you need, linens were very nice. The "push together the beds" thing is a bit awkward, but when you see the stairs and see the size of the windows, you realize there's no way a queen-size bed is getting into these houses (look up, you'll see a pulley/hook at the top of most of the buildings, which is how I assume you get large items into the buildings).
The only drawbacks I found were pretty minor. The price was a bit steep for the condition of the place - as my wife noted, this apartment is decorated and cleaned by men. It is a smoking apartment so it does smell like cigarette smoke. There was a washer but inexplicably no dryer to go with it. The microwave did not seem to work. There is an espresso machine, but no "american" coffeemaker, and the espresso machine only takes "Nespresso" cartridges, and you have to go to a department store in the city center to find them (di Bijenkorf, Dam 1). I drank at least 7 boxes of that. The internet is somewhat spotty, if you need to work, think about a prepaid data card or something. If you want to watch movies or anything from your laptop, note that the connections on the TV are inaccessible due to the way it's mounted. Sadly there is no stereo (not even a cheap one) in the place, which is a bit sad if you're not into TV when you're stuck inside due to weather.
Lastly this may or may not be a drawback, but note that the place is called "Amnesia" because it is right next to the amnesia coffee shop. You will smell weed during operating hours. You may curse that a place offering so much weed is right next to you if you fear getting glued to the couch. If you are an ex-pothead, the odor seeping through may cause you to fall off the wagon. On the upside, the place seems very low-key and much quiter than you might expect - we had no issues with the patrons. Oh, there is a single prostitute in a window at the other end of the block. It's a bit weird, as if the rest of the block gentrified and left this one red-light remnant behind. -

We stayed in "Amnesia" for five days at the beginning of December. It was truly an experience! The house is nicely renovated with comfortable beds and a functional and large kitchen. We found ourselves eating in many nights, loving the atmosphere of the apartment (it almost felt like we stepped back in time!).
Yes, the stairs are steep, but for a fit family, they are absolutely fine, and add to the whole canal house experience. With all the dutch cheese we were eating, the stair probably saves us from putting on a few kilos. However, I think that they might be too steep for some elderly people.
The best part about the apartment was the location. It was within walking distance to everything, yet, we felt 100% safe.
We truly enjoyed our stay, and hope to return soon! :) -

The Canal House is a delightful blend of the old and the new. One one hand, you will feel like you have stepped back in time, especially when you make your first ascent of the very steep and narrow stairs (which you will get accustomed to quickly). However, you are surrounded by every modern convenience, including a fully equipped kitchen, flat screen TVs, and a hot tub. Although there is only 1 shower, 4 people would be very comfortable here.
The location is great. Amsterdam is not only lovely, but fairly compact, and the Canal Belt is ideal for strolling. There is a major tram line 2 blocks away. A tremendous number of restaurants and pubs are within a 10 minute walk. We ate at a little Indonesian place right around the corner where we had a delicious rijstaffel. If you are stocking the kitchen, a supermarket is behind Dam Square, maybe 15 minutes away.
Finally, we cannot say enough about the service, hospitality and kindness of the incomparable Adriaan. He is more than a friendly face greeting you in a foreign country. He is someone we will never forget. -
