Description from the owner

Introduction

This recently renovated original canal house combined with a studio is situated in the Canal Belt and lies between the Herengracht and the Singel, two of the most central canals in Amsterdam. Experience an exquisite blend of seventeenth century Amsterdam and a light modern style in this wonderful house.

The 100m2 apartment covers the whole building and counts four floors. It is fully furnished in a mixture between the warm classic style of seventeenth century Amsterdam and a light modern style. It has three small, but cosy bedrooms with the original wooden ceilings and two bathrooms.

    Additional Location Information

    Neighbourhood / Location
As mentioned, the apartment is located between the Herengracht and the Singel canal. The Singel encircled the city in the Middle Ages and was the boundary of the old city. The Herengracht is the first of the three major canals in the city centre of Amsterdam.

The house is close to the city's most important sights, such as the Dam Square, the Anne Frank House, the Red Light District, the famous Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Amsterdam Hermitage; all within walking distance!

Some of Amsterdam's most popular restaurants are also within this range and you will have no problem finding a lovely place for dinner. The Central Station is only 800 meters away and if you chose to take the public transport, tram 1,2 and 5 have stops literally meters away.

      Tons of Character

Left on 04/08/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Stayed there celebrating my 60th Birthday ,with four family members.Loved it, clean, well presented. Ok its tall and narrow but its traditional and totally different.
The building work referred to in another review was completed months ago. Quiet location, the odd reveller wanders past late at night but this is amsterdam.
No problem with tight stairs, banging heads etc ...get a life or get fitter, even managed it after over-imbibing .Perhaps not good for young children though.
Couldn`t master the large spa bath/jacuzzi though ,the remote control may have had flat batteries,Both Bathrooms nicely re-fitted.The top rear Bedroom was peaceful and a good comfortable bed (actually two adjacent singles as they all were).
There isn`t much room if you want to spend lots of time inside ie no large lounge etc but as a clean, comfortable and well equipped base its totally unique, centrally placed and we all loved it. Think narrow boat but vertical and its getting close.
Good position, walking distance from Central Station and most tourist sites.
We found it clean and as we left the cleaner was hovering outside and went in straight away.
Certainly I would recommend it to anyone except the very old/young or habitual whingers.

      Half baked

Left on 09/22/2012 for a stay in September 2012

I don't usually write reviews, but I decided to share my experience this time. Me and three of my friends stayed at the angel's Canal House for 6 nights (September 6th - September 12th). I can breakdown my experience as follows:

      1. The "House"
All I can say here is that the pictures presented on their website do not reflect the reality of the house size; its almost two meters wide, and the stairs are really steep! (& if you're going up to the 2nd floor, you need to kneel really low to avoid hitting your head). The roof in the 1st and 2nd floors are so low that I needed to kneel while walking (I'm 177cm btw). So be ready for back strains!

Don't be fooled by their claims that the house has a patio; the patio does not exist. When we arrived the gentleman who was giving us the tour told us that the patio was never approved by some ministry. They failed to mention this important point despite the dozens of email exchanges with the staff at amsterdamCityapartments.

Finally, if you're planning to stay during warm days, make sure you ask for a fan. The ventilation in the house is really poor, and two of us had to pull the mattresses downstairs to sleep.

      2. The House condition when we arrived
Dusty with insects (and spider webs). Clearly they haven't done a good job cleaning the place or treating it for insects. Yet to be fair, when we told them about the infestation, they did spray the place the next day, but that wasn't very effective.

Another issue they concealed was the fact that the neighbors had construction work done at their house. With no exaggeration, we had to wake up 9am (latest) everyday to the noise of heavy equipment right in front of the house! When we asked the neighbor if they informed the owners of their work, and they said that amsterdam law requires residents to inform their neighbors of any such work. Again, they never thought of telling us! At one point, we weren't able to exit/enter the apartment because of the work being done (pictures speak louder than words, please see below).

      3. Location
The only highlight is the location - the house is situated close to Dam Square and other important districts, thus the 2 stars.

Top location but a tight squeeze

Left on 07/14/2012 for a stay in April 2012

We stayed here with 6 friends for a long weekend. Flat is modern and very clean, equiped with all necessary facilities and amenities but it is very disjointed with each living area on a different level. The studio on the lower ground is separate from the rest of the apartment and would be better rented out separately for 2 people as the main apartment and kitchen only caters for 4 people. The 2nd bedroom upstairs is just a bed in a room with no space on either side of it and with no wardrobe. It leads off the main bedroom so there is no privacy. Highlights are the great locaiton - centrally located, easy to walk to from Central Station and Dam Square. The bathrooms have awesome jacuzzi baths, there is free wireless and an information booklet of useful tips. Would recommend for a short stay
