Left on 02/17/2013 for a stay in January 2013
He didn't let me write "our" :))! No words can properly describe our incredible stay in this little piece of heaven in anahola! We never took the time to write a review before, but this place more than deserves it! Incredible place, very clean, all you need for a perfect romantic vacation. Wonderful to fall asleep listening to the ocean and waking up peacefully to the roosters! The beach is fantastic, we felt like it was ours! One day I counted 12 people in the all beach and jokingly called it too crowded, and Mikee said "this sucks, way too many people here"!
It is a must to go buy great organic food at the local farmers markets, cook some incredible meals on the grill while drinking cocktails, star gaze from the hot tub, take a walk on the beach at night and watch the moon rise from the ocean! Thanks for the attitude adjustment!

My wife, 2.5 year old son and I had a wonderful stay here. I hesitate to write our review because I wish I could just keep it our secret. Greg, the owner, made sure we ha everything we needed. The beach is across the street, the hot tub is cozy, and the chickens, aka jungle fowl, greeted us each morning with enthusiasm. A great location from which to explore both sides of the island. Way homier than a hotel or condo. We highly recommend this place.

Carmichael, CAWonderful Experience in Secluded anahola
Left on 01/16/2013 for a stay in December 2012
From the very first day I began the reservation process for Hibiscus Hula, Garden Isle provided exceptional service. This was most appreciated when we arrived in Kauai expecting to spend the first two days or our trip hiking the Kalalau trail only to find the trail closed. On very short notice, Sue was able to get us into the cottage a day early so we didn't have to spend new years eve in a tent at anini Beach Park. The house was perfect for our needs: Charming, homey, immaculate, perfectly comfortable for four adults. The library of Kauai books was very helpful. Being located immediately accross the street from beautiful anahola Bay was amazing and the seclusion afforded by being well off the main highway and on a dead-end street was much appreciated. Having traveled to Kauai many times in the past, I'd somehow never stopped at anahola before. Now, it's one of my favorite places.
Our experience at Hibiscus was fantastic. Suggestions for making it even better include: a sturdy knife in the kitchen for chopping veggies and fruit, a hot-water outdoor shower, a better kitchen trash can (the footpad to open the lid was broken), a longer bed in the second bedroom (I'm 6'2" and could barely fit in between the head and foot-boards) and maybe a boogie board or two.
The next time we come to Kauai, Hibiscus Hula Cottage will definitely be our first choice. Mahalo!Response from Garden Island Properties LLC - 01/16/2013

Aloha and Mahalo for your kind review!
We will definitely follow up on your kitchen suggestions. Outdoor shower is provided next to the jacuzzi but to keep our electricity costs down (one of the highest in the nation), it is only cold showers. Trundle bed are 2 twins and set in size due to the frame it comes in but we are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and welcome to have you back. Due to liability reasons :( we cannot offer boogie boards but do supply coolers, beach chairs, umbrella and beach towels for guest enjoyment. Glad you appreciated the books and location of the beach from Hibiscus Hula Cottage. We look forwrad to having you back. -

This is a perfect little 1953 house with decor to match - even a real stainless draining board! Beautiful Douglas fir floors, retro furnishings, wireless internet and a hot tub with a great view of the mountains. Everything you need is provided, except high grade ear plugs. If you are a very heavy sleeper or if you live on a farm, you may be okay. Otherwise you are likely to be awakened at any hour of the night by crowing roosters. Maybe they're start at 1:30 am and go for an hour or more. for sure, they will crow 6-9 am when you would like to have quiet morning coffee and listen to the ocean waves from the beach which is, literally, across the street. Take ear plugs, your dog or a hatchet.

Aloha & Mahalo for your review...we do apologize for the chickens. Especially during a full moon, they must get mixed up on the times due to the brighness of the moon and crow sometimes in the middle of the night. Kaua`i is for the most part still a rural island and something we can't get away from; but some do feel that the chickens add "charm" to the island style feeling. :)

San FranciscoPerfect honeymoon cottage
Left on 10/11/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My wife and I stayed here for the first seven nights of our honeymoon before heading off to the Hyatt Regency in Maui for two nights. We were so happy in the Hibiscus Beach Cottage. The cottage is secluded as anahola is a town away from tourists, and the cottage itself is down a long windy road across the street from a beautiful beach. We woke up to the sunlight pouring through our windows and the waves of the ocean gently each morning. From anahola it's easy to get to both the North side and South side of the island (which we did) for snorkeling (a must, check Poipu beach but watch your feet for corals) and North for the hike to Hanakapai beach (another must, it's not an easy hike though). The only knock is the shower, which is a bit "industrial" as my wife called it, but hey you're in Hawaii and in paradise so it's not a big deal. The owners are responsive and available. We had a wonderful time. Highly recommended!

Our family of four had a magical time in Kauai and part of the reason was the Hibiscus Hula Beach Cottage. Our kids--age 5 and 7--loved picking oranges and plumeria flowers and chasing the moa (chickens) every morning in the backyard. We found it so easy to barbeque, sitting out and watching the mountains as evening came. I loved sitting on the porch reading and looking across the street to watch the gigantic waves break on the beach. The house is well-equipped with all you need and is so cute and comfortable. The location was great too, out of town, but a close trip to eat or shop. Sleeping with the windows open and listening to the ocean every night--heaven on earth!

We finally found our perfect home away from home!
This cottage was perfect for the two of us! Last year we stayed in 3 different places and while all were beautiful, none felt like home. We need a respite from crowds. We need to be on our own schedule. We love to prepare meals from locally caught fish and local produce. We like to walk with a cup of coffee to a quiet beach for sunrise, to sit on a quiet beach at sunset, to be able to walk on a beach by moonlight.
We had a peek of the ocean from the porch and a fabulous view of the mountains from the kitchen and hot tub. The house is just the right size. Evenings were quiet (we actually enjoy the roosters and were always able to return to sleep after hearing the first volley of noise every morning. The kitchen had everything we needed, the house was clean, airy, plenty cool at night. We did laundry and used the solar dryer though there is a dryer in the laundry room. All the beach equipment we needed was there.
We enjoyed meeting the owners, their daughter, seeing the monk seal and new pup being guarded by the seal watchers. We met a neighbor who shared mangos and lychees.
We are already trying to determine when we can return for another trip. We cannot imagine ever staying at another place after having stayed here.Response from Garden Island Properties LLC - 09/26/2012

Anahola Bay is our favorite part of the island after several vists over the past few years. The laid back atmosphere and quite open beachs are what keep us coming to the island. The cottage just puts the topping on the cake for a laid back vaction. The simple but very complete and cared for amenities are what make this cottage stand out compared to a the other we have stayed in during past visits. The only diapointment is that it is already booked for our nest planed trip to the island.

The photos don't do Hibiscus Cottage justice - it's a magical place. The bay across the street has everything: swimming, snorkeling, walking and a shallow lagoon for kids. We enjoyed this central location for sites around Kapaa and north to Hanalei and beyond - there's even a small market right around the corner. aloha

Left on 02/02/2012 for a stay in July 2011
We stayed in July 2011 so my review is overdue, but wanted to leave a positive review for this hidden little gem since we're thinking about revisiting again this year!
It was perfect for our family of four (8 yr old and 3 yr old), and though the cottage is not "beachfront" you just need to cross a narrow road and you're there, clear blue waters and white sand and all. You can't see the ocean, but can definitely hear the sound of waves lulling you to sleep at night. Our 3 yr old loved running around in the huge grassy backyard chasing roosters and picking fallen gardenias for me. Everything was well stocked, well thought out, and a perfect base for us to explore the island as it was centrally located. There were plenty of towels, beach chairs, tatami mats, snorkle gear, ice chests, umbrellas, you name it.
The downstairs shower was different than what I'm used to and caught me by surprise, but my husband didn't mind at all - says there was good water pressure and great for rinsing off both kids at the same time and very practical. Because it's a large 6'x6'open shower space, it was convenient for all of us to family power shower after a day at the beach, which was kind of fun. If you're looking for a luxurious bathtub with jets, this is not it.
The kitchen has a gorgeous view of the mountains, and every morning we sipped our coffee, had breakfast and spotted a few rainbows as well. Then, we hit the beach. And every day, it was as if we had our own very private beach - there was hardly anyone there, ever. That's when I knew that we had found a hidden gem.
We became friends with one of the locals and our kids are now pen pals and still keep in touch. By the way, the waters were pretty calm and fine to splash around in for our kids in the morning and afternoon (in July).
All in all, a great value for a family vacation and you can't beat the price. My kids still talk about it and are constantly asking when we can go back. -

This was a great cottage for a family of four, right across from the beach and we could even hear the ocean from our room! Roomy backyard was great for the kids and the location is great, not far from the north or east shores and very quiet as it is well off the main highway. The cottage had everything we needed, from a blender to lots of beach towels, beach mats, a cooler and great Kauai travel books.

Left on 12/29/2011 for a stay in October 2011
My husband and I had the most incredible 10 day honeymoon on the island of Kauai, much in thanks to the home-base of the Hibiscus Hula Cottage. Every evening we enjoyed a soak in the perfect-for-two hot tub, and were lulled to sleep by the crashing waves on anahola bay. The cottage surprised us almost immediately when we walked in, the pictures just don't do the space justice. It's much larger than expected, the pictures of the living area seems a bit narrow, the kitchen tiny, but trust me, you'll have plenty of room to live, it's surprisingly large. The home is also impeccably clean, well stocked, bright, private and cozy. Another upside to this rental, you'll feel just like a local, the beach across the street is where the locals hang out, it's away (but, incredibly close to) the hustle and bustle (if there is such a thing on the island of Kauai) - which reminds me I must mention, it's also a perfect location on the island, not far from the north end, super close to Kapaa, and a near enough drive to Poipu. The home feels safe, it's comfortable, and quiet. Chickens in the backyard both in the morning and at night (what we loved most about the island, a joy to have at 'home' when we woke up or returned). Sheer vacation perfection!
If you're going to Kauai, I couldn't recommend this adorable, accommodating home more. We hope to be back to celebrate our anniversaries! -

Are you interested in having your own private piece of paradise? Want to avoid the touristy hussle of other parts of the island while still having easy access to both North or South Shores? Want to be across the street from the beach with the most scenic stretch of mountains on the entire island in your back yard? Want to watch the sunrise every morning? Hot Tub? Dine-in kitchen to avoid spending money eating out all the time? Do it for about a grand for the week? No? Ok, then you wouldn't be interested in this place.
For my wife and I, we had a great honeymoon here and opening the windows every night and falling asleep/waking to the sound of the ocean is intoxicating. Greg and his wife (the owners) live next door and we didn't know it until we saw him and said hi ended up with fresh papaya from his back yard. They had great tips for us and their home is really beautiful and a perfect launchpad for enjoying the island in a non-resort fashion. Anahola has the highest percentage of native islanders on the whole island so what it lacks in touristy amenaties it makes up for in character. The only other people on the beach was a local family and a woman doing traditional hula in the surf during sunrise.Response from Garden Island Properties LLC - 12/19/2011

I enjoyed the cottage much more than my friend. I adored the whole authentic Hawaiian experience... Roosters crowing and dogs barking didn't bother me at all. She on the other hand was ready for coq au vin after the 1st morning!
The ceiling fans made up for the lack of a/C in my book, it's the exact set up I have in New England. It was comfortable but better when we remembered to draw the drapes to keep the afternoon sun from heating up the kitchen.
The place was clean albeit a little tired in the kitchen. (About 30 teaspoons and 4 forks & 2 knives in the silverware draw.) A little Clorox in the dishwater and I had the cups & glasses & flatware all sparkling again. It was what you would expect from any rental cottage. No complaints, just a little nesting to make it homey.
The amenities were wonderful, washer & dryer; secure Wi-Fi, gas BBQ grill and a small hot tub. Walking distance to the beach access (literally about 150 feet) in either direction. Add in the roomy fridge and the rice cooker and I was all set.
There was even an assortment of masks & snorkels in the basement, along with beach mats & beach chairs & and an umbrella. We used it all.
The shower is a little weird, but once you get used to having a 6' square to shower in, it was tough to come home to the one in the bathtub!
I will happily rent the place again on my next visit to Kauai! It's not fancy it is homey. If I wanted pretentious I would have stayed in Princeville.

You can't not go wrong with this rental. Location is unmatched, rural, removed from the typical island visitor life, & right on a beautiful beach. We were sold the second we drove up. The house itself is perfectly comfortable, especially after a day sightseeing, or for just lazing the day away. Nothing like having a having a place to call home to enjoy the island. Our host Greg was more than accommodating to make our trip absolutely brilliant. We were able to book everything from on-line, everything represented on-line is just as it looks, is just steps from the beach, & is very affordable. The only drawback was the shrubbery that obstructed the view of water which we suspect is a windbreak. This didn't stop the sound of surf that lulled us to sleep. Be prepared for the chickens. You can't go to Kaua'i without knowing that. Otherwise, look for a beautiful sunrise, enjoy the beach, & look no further for a place to stay. Mahola Greg!

We spent two months on the island of Kauai and located in four different areas. This cute vintage cottage gave us a glimpse of where the actual island residents live, not just the tourists. We enjoyed the beach across the road, the beautiful sunrises, the proximity to the Princeville and Kapaa. The neighbors were very helpful. As we descended alimanu Road to the cottage, we knew we had eluded the crowds. It is a lovely area. I would recommend it to honeymooners, writers and artists. I would not recommend it to a working woman who needs some spoiling, away from cooking and household maintenance. We took a ton of photographs, especially the back view of King Kong from the kitchen window. It was a memorable visit.

This was the perfect place for us. Better than the online pictures. How rare is that?! Great out of the way location especially for us since we found ourselves most attracted to Tunnels Beach and Hanalei just a short drive away on the North Shore. The cottage was charming, right down to the welcoming plumeria thoughtfully placed inside for our arrival. Anahola Beach was beautiful and mostly quiet. Got a little busy with campers over the July 4th weekend, but the ocean sound mostly tempered any noise plus we were so into aloha mode anyway thanks to most hospitable next door neighbor owners Sue and Greg. Thank you again.

We really enjoyed being across the road from Anahola Bay. Snorkeling, boogie boarding and swimming were all available there. We spent most of our time there.
The house was very cute and well stocked but we were very disappointed in the 'Oceanview". A tall hedge blocked the view and only had one small area that if you were standing on the front porch you could see the ocean. The mountain views out of the back of the house were gorgeous. The house is close to town yet not touristy at all. The beach chairs and boogie boards were very nice to have. The owners next door were very nice and helpful. The best thing was Anahola Bay, the worst thing was not really having a view.Response from Garden Island Properties LLC - 05/13/2010

The Hibiscus Hula Cottage was perfect in all respects. The attention to detail in creating a warm welcome was much appreciated, as was the fact that the ocean was directly across the road. Everything we needed for the week was at hand, from a full-furnished kitchen to a lovely two-person hot tub. The quiet neighborhood was another plus. There's nothing I would change, and can think of not shortfall - other than I may not be able to enjoy it for many more years.

This house is in a good location; between Kapaa and Hanalei; a quiet residential area with a nice beach accross the street. As requested, I could hear the ocean every night when I went to sleep, but I did not swim at the beach across the street because of the rough surf. However the day we left we took a walk(north) down the street and discovered that one can swim in a more protected area there. The house was clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. The basement shower arrangement was fine; it too was clean and convienient. Extra's are good/ nice towels, beach gear etc, however a small cooler would have been nice. All in all, it was what I had expected. I would go back again.

Cute little beach cottage, across the street from a nearly deserted beach, within sound of the waves. Wonderfully equipped house with nearly everything for a short stay -- beach gear, coolers, boogie boards, kitchen complete with condiments and every utensil needed (though the toaster didn't work). Outside, a bbq and outdoor table beside a gorgeous hot tub. The TV has poor reception, but who wants it anyway? Would definitely come back.

I would say that the only minor problem was the roosters that crow evey morning. But that happens all over the island. They are very beautiful. The cottage is spotlessly clean and well appointed with linens, beach stuff and kitchen utensils...but you still feel like you've stepped back about 60 years into "Tales of the South Pacific".
Electrical outlets are scarce, but wireless internet is there...and it works.
Tangerines and papaya were there to pick off the ground...so delicious!! The hot-tub is really great too!
It really is "steps to the beach" and Oh, what a beach! What a bay!! Walk a few hundred yards in one direction and snorkel to your heart's content. Walk in the other direction and do some body-surfing...it is all right there! Quiet and quite beautiful!
If you aren't looking for "resort" but are looking for comfort and incredible beauty, in every direction, Hibiscus Hula Cottage is the place.
You can walk to a little grocery store and post office...and even get a good burger, if you want to.
Hibiscus Hula cottage is a very special and wondeful place!! -
