The Skimmer unit at the Blue Dolphin Inn, located at 404 Alamanda in the Historic Village of Anna Maria is a wonderful two bedroom, one bath downstairs unit furnished in a tropical theme. The Blue Dolphin Inn consists of four units surrounding a free style heated pool with fountains and nearby tiki table. I have mixed feelings about this rental property, and that is because I feel it is very overpriced certainly not value for money. The photos on the web are accurate, however it is a lot older and shabbier than the pictures suggest. The property is split in two, we were in the downstairs â€Skimmer’.
We arrived on the Friday evening, and found the house very dark with a strong musky/mouldy smell to it, no matter how long we â€aired’ the place the smell never left. The house was clean but the dishwasher was all mouldy and grubby so I ran it a few times to clear it but it became obvious there was a fault as it did not drain. The gas on the BBQ was empty and the BBQ very dirty. The light on the front door does not work. There was a space marked â€Beach Equipment’, it was empty, no beach chairs or Umbrellas at this property…we purchased some from the local shop and donated then to the property when we left! We reported all this to the office on the Saturday morning and the dishwasher was fixed by late Monday. The light & BBQ did not get sorted out. No beach equipment! The pool was cold, and the pump ran all night till it was warmer, the pool pump is located by the second bedroom window and is very noisy, it was good that the room was not in use. All of the above are management issues and I feel that the property is not managed well by the company who should be maintaining it.
However, as I said it was clean, the location is good, close to the Rod & Reel Bar / restaurant and close to walk to the beautiful beaches. I would go back to anna Marie Island but not to this property.Response from Island Vacation Properties, LLC - 03/19/2013

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the Skimmer unit. We are sorry that you encountered problems. We do try to be clear on the configuration of the property. It is two duplexes that share a pool. The are four different spots on the property where beach toys and equipment are stored and they do get moved around by guests. Had you called the office we would surely have supplied the chairs for you. When the gas grill ran out of fuel as they do occasionally, we did replace the tank for you as quickly as possible on the same day the we replaced the burned out light. Light bulbs do burn out. I'm sorry that you felt the pool heated was noisy but there really isn't anywhere else to put it without causing problems elsewhere. This is the first complaint that we have received about this issue. The guests who checked out prior to your arrival made no mention of a musty smell in the unit, nor have the guests who checked in on the day you departed. We will certainly check out of of the issues that you described however. We at Island Vacation Properties take great pride in all of our properties and want everyone who stays with us to have a worry free vacation. I'm sorry that you felt we failed in your case.

Good layout of rooms. Very close to lovely beach. Refrigerator did not work; service man came evening before our departure (nice man, knowledgeable) who confirmed frig was old &would; not keep a proper temp,replacement likely.
Smoke alarm chirped from day one--no batteries in house to replace. Phone in home did not work to be able to call out from home. Front porch light did not work. Odor of dankness in house--opening windows helped. Odor in lower
cupboards. Odor of urine in master bedroom--human or animal? Cd not tell.
Wd be nice if kitchen drawers wd be cleaned up a bit. All these complaints cd
be easily handled, more or less. In spite of these we had a good stay--being close to beach & being able to walk to Rod &Reel; Pier are definitely great assets. Outside patio nice to use. This was our 2nd trip to anna Maria and our first stay at the Blue Dolphin Inn. Skimmer was great, neat, and clean. The place was well stocked. The pool is small but a big bonus. Our kids loved it. The beach is an easy walk and very nice. The patio and grill were used daily. All in all, a great trip.

I would have given the Skimmer one star on the first couple of days of our stay basically for 2 reasons: paint fumes and noisy pool equipment. The management had decided to completely paint the entire interior of the unit, finishing the morning of our arrival and leaving the fans off and windows and doors sealed. So the the paint smell was almost intolerable when we arrived and for the first night and day or so. Management offered to move us to a different unit if it still seemed bad in the morning, which it did, but it turned out that they were not able to move us; the person who offered had been misinformed. It seems like a big agency and you talk to someone different each time you call. Fortunately the weather was good and with the windows open and fans on round the clock, the smell was OK by day 3 and only faint by the time we left. The new paint looked lovely. It's very tastefully decorated overall, with comfortable furniture and beds. Sheets and towels and basic kitchen stuff are there, but plan to bring your own toilet paper, soap, etc. The noisy pool equipment was not functioning when we arrived but repaired our first day, resulting in a blower running all the time right outside the second bedroom window (why did they put it there??). We figured out how to set its timer so it would not run at night, but it was a stress point. If you and the rest of the complex guests want a warm pool, you have to have that running most of the day. Also, the back patio is lovely, but the neighbors' noisy pool equipment runs most of the time just the other side of the fence. The front porch is constantly wonderful for hanging out. and watching the sky, foliage, birds, lizards and occasional bicyclist, walker and child playing in the street. The location is wonderful - quiet and pleasant. It's a 1.5 block walk to one of the most beautiful beaches I know. Ultimately we really enjoyed our time at the Skimmer and might even go back, but will go elsewhere if we want to invite others to join us because of the noisy second bedroom.

This rental is superbly located close to the beach as well as the bay. It was great to be able to walk quickly to the beach for a nice stroll or to read a book. My wife and I also enjoyed bike riding around the island as well. The rental itself was comfortable, not upscale but nice. The beds could have been more comfy, and bring your own pillows, but overall I enjoyed it. Nice courtyard to relax or eat out, pool area was nice but heated pool was not heated (broken, but promised to be fixed soon and they reimbursed me $100 for the inconvenience) Also, the hot water heater was not set right, so it would run out of hot water after two minutes. I called the office, and they sent someone quickly to fix, so happy with the service. Overall, if the bedding were more comfy, the pool heated or hot tub installed, I would stay here every year.

Great location - nice place. couldn't use the pool (freezing - i don't think the heater was on at all). Beds not completely comfortable, but all in all a good experience.
