The Shady Mango

The Shady Mango was originally built in 1925. According to local history

the heart pine used in constructing the original house came by steam boat

to the City Pier and was hauled by horse-drawn lorry up Pine Avenue to the

home's present site.

In 2004 the home was given a major renovation consisting of replacing all

of the wooden flooring, wiring, plumbing, windows, roof, several walls and

a redesigned floor plan.

Beautiful Brazilian teak floors, attractive white wainscoting on the walls;

and a brand new kitchen with white beadboard cabinets and solid quartz

countertops. Multicolored Delft... tiles (circa 1650) adorn the kitchen

backsplash with ox-head corner motifs while each exquisite tin-glazed tile

portrays a hand-painted ship, windmill, flower or bird.

The living room fireplace has been updated and surrounded with vibrant blue

and yellow, hand-painted Spanish tiles from a prominent studio in Santa Fe,

New Mexico. This striking design is an artistic delight and highlights the

original 1925 fireplace mantle.

There are two bedrooms, an expansive master suite painted sunny yellow with

a king bed and a smaller guest room in soothing tones of blue with twin

beds. Two spacious baths with a cast iron claw foot slipper tub as the

centerpiece of the master bath. This unique bathtub is reminiscent of a

bygone era, as are the polished nickel fittings and fixtures.

The back of the house is a magical hideaway with a spacious deck and roof

extension that form a peaceful cabana overlooking the large pool, spa and

waterfall. Enclosing the back yard are 22, tall Areca palms to ensure

privacy. An aura of enchantment surrounds the serene pool ensconced among

the mango and palm trees.

In keeping with old Florida charm, the cozy interiors feature warm colors

and cheerful prints mixed with antiques, old wicker and whimsical

accessories. Comfortable furnishings invite you to relax, unwind and put

your feet up! The cabana overlooking the pool is informal, perfect for

alfresco entertaining or just savoring the view and serenity of your own

private oasis.

The deep mint green cedar shakes shingles adorn the house and the fanciful

white gable supports impart the feeling of a storybook chalet. Framed by a

  I've been affiliated with The Shady Mango for almost 4 years now, and not once have I had a guest stay there who didn't just love their experience! The cottage is just as charming as it looks in the pictures (one guest told me that of all the vacation rentals he and his wife have enjoyed, The Shady Mango is the only one that actually looks like its pictures!), and the back yard with its navy blue-bottom pool and waterfall is like a secret garden oasis. The owners do a wonderful job keeping everything in top-notch condition, and have scheduled an extensive landscape renovation for this month, including romantic lighting and cottage garden plantings. Of course, the location in the heart of the village of anna Maria is perfect for enjoying all the ambience and amenities of our little town, but privacy is complete when you walk through the front door! Don't miss the island's most wonderful coastal cottage!
