Description from the owner

Borgo Santa Maria in Valle,Arezzo,Laterina,Tuscany

Our holiday house has been created by the lovingly and painstakingly restoration of a XVII century farm, set on a panoramic position on the gentle slopes that descend towards the Arno river.

The farmhouse, once upon a time, was part an old estate, where farmers grew tobacco. The house has recently acquired the status of historical building.

    Additional Location Information

The quiet hilly panoramic area is only 3 kilometres from the beautiful medieval Village of Laterina, the lodging enjoys countryside privacy ,close proximity to the attractions and amenities of the cities. Being in the centre of Tuscany you will be able to reach easily, Siena, Cortona,Lake Trasimeno, Perugia,Assisi and many other cities of Umbria and Tuscany. The shopping lovers will find nearby many outlets of the most important Made in Italy fashion brands .The area is full of nice restaurants, where you can taste the typical Tuscan cuisine.
    The area
Upper Aretine Valdarno : an undiscovered part of Tuscany. Just few minutes drive from the more famous Chianti area. The Arno Valley is enclosed between the Pratomagno Mountains and the high hills of Chianti, crossed by the Arno river, rich in Olive groves and vineyards, with beech and chestnuts woods.Nature, art, evocative landscapes and typical agriculture are the essence of this part of Tuscany. The upper Aretine Valdarno is well worth a visit, inhabited since the Etruscan times , the area experienced important changes in the Middle Ages, when many villages , forts and castles were built. Each mucipality in this area has a clear medieval origin and in many villages and towns the ancient splendour has remained intact.

    the village of Laterina
    Laterina

The territory where today the Laterina castle stands out was inhabited ever since very ancient times, as the Etrurian dwellings and the probable Roman settlements of the Augustan age testify. The development of the ancient hamlet started in the 11th century, when deep social transformations brought the populations settled on the planes or in clusters of houses scattered on the hill to gather inside the castle, for safety reasons as well as in order to be closer to the then completed main road, the most important communication and commercial traffic way of Valdarno. In 1272, Arezzo took possession of Laterina to hold up the expansion in Valdarno of the Florentines. Since then for over one century, the castle witnessed bloodshed between the Republic of Florence and the Town of Arezzo. After a series of ups and downs, exactly in Laterina, on the 5th November 1384, the treaty was signed that sanctioned the final defeat of Arezzo and the delivery of the territories of the old village to the Republic of Florence.
The historical centre is in perfect conditions and lies on a hill that dominates the Arno plain: the plan has a longitudinal pattern and adapted itself to the line of the ridge on which it lies. The circle of walls encloses the village that overlooks the rugged declivity of the hill. The ancient centre is made up of three parallel streets: the central one, the "Via di Mezzo" ends to the east with the Fortress and to the west with the tower Torre Guinigi. In the middle of the village there is the square with the church of S. Ippolito and S.Cassiano which took this name from the old parish in the surroundings (it is still possible to visit the ruins). On one side of the church the remains of a Roman mosaic coming from the same ancient parish are visible. Externally, a path unfolded along the circle of walls, recognisable today only here and there. In the north-east part there is Porta di Ghianderino: this is the only gate of the three original ones, still standing, and is its architectural elements that mostly remind us of the ancient walls, made with hewn sandstone and Arno river stones. Outside Laterina on the left banks of the Arno river visitors will discover the old pieve of Santa Maria in Valle. While along the”Via Vecchia Aretina” stands the magnificent Villa Monsoglio, one of the most beautiful villas in the Arezzo area. It has an extensive Italian garden and its interiors have been decorated with frescoes. On the plain at the feet of Laterina, where once upon a time it was crossing the river, there are the old ruins of Ponte Romito, a bridge, so called because built close to an hospital founded by the religious order of the Franciscan tertiaries, commonly called by the population "hermits". The bridge, was in the ancient times was very important to shorten the road between Arezzo and Valdarno.
    Excursion:
    Arezzo
Many would insist that it is impossible to find a large interesting town in Tuscany with rich medieval and Renaissance remains not overrun by tourists. But you can, and it is called Arezzo.

    Poppi
is definitely not one of Tuscany’s largest or most well known towns,
but once visited it is unforgettable. Poppi has 6000 inhabitants,
and since very few tourists find their way out here, the town is wonderfully unspoilt.
    Chianti wine district
Chianti wine was incredibly popular especially in the years from 1870 to 1900,
which led to the shabby copies from other districts. As long as the wine was
poured in the classic fiasco bottle, it could pass as Chianti.
In 1924 a group of wine producers from central Chianti formed a consortium, which took its
name from the Lega de Chianti’s symbol – a black rooster.
and since very few tourists find their way out here, the town is wonderfully unspoilt.
    Montepulciano
Montepulciano is about 60 km southeast of Siena.
The town is built on the crest of a hill 605 metres above sea level.
The town is Etruscan in origin,
but became an independent province in the fourteenth century.

Sansepolcro nestles in the southeastern corner of Tuscany,
just a few kilometers from Umbria and Marche. Although Sansepolcro is today an industrial town,
the town centre is a great place to visit and abounds in rich medieval history.
    Monte Oliveto Maggiore Monastery
At the top of a forest covered peak in Tuscany the monastery
Monte Oliveto Maggiore stands in solitary majesty. You get here by driving up
the winding country road before arriving at the impressive building complex.
The monastery was built at the start of the 14th century when 3 Sienese noblemen
and the holy Bernado Tolomei settled in this rugged place to pray and work.

      Beautiful family holiday in Tuscany

Left on 07/27/2011 for a stay in June 2011

What a lovely few days we had at Borgo Santa Maria! The villa is in a wonderful location, well-situated for day trips to Siena, Florence and many other Tuscan hill towns. Our apartment was sparkling clean and comfortable; the whole property is beautiful and well-maintained. And what a warm welcome we received from our hosts, owners Giorgio and anna. They were knowledgeable and kind, and forever helpful with directions, advice and suggestions for whatever you might feel like exploring. Our stay in Tuscany was one of the high points of our Italian vacation, and our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. It was the perfect place for a family holiday.

Full kitchen, attentive hosts with plenty of information; They recommended 2 great restaurants & made the reservations; free laundry; provided plenty of towels & sheets. We were welcomed with a bottle of wine & olive oil & luxury bathroom products. We did not need to buy anything for the flat. Just food & drinks for us. The hosts went out of their way to provide useful info on shopping, visiting sites, driving directions, everything we needed; including a cable to connect camera to PC!

A Gem in the Tuscan Hills

Left on 07/19/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Our stay in Borgo Santa Maria was a lovely, relaxing idyll among the rolling hills in Tuscany, a highlight of our trip to Italy and made all the more wonderful by the indescribable owners, Giorgio and anna. Our family of four (parents, two teens) stayed very comfortably in the Il Carpano apartment, which was cozy, sparkling clean and filled with everything we needed. The grounds are lovely and well-kept, and everything is pristine, including the pool. But anna and Giorgio are the real reason to go back again. Whether we were relaxing by the water, exploring the beautiful countryside, or hopping on the convenient train to Florence, we could count on our hosts to brighten the experience with useful advice, precise directions or just jolly conversation. We arrived as vacation customers, but left feeling like we'd spent time with life-long friends.

Our accomodations were clean, authentic and very comfortable. Having a pool to cool off in every evening after sightseeing in the countryside was a pleasure. Anna went out of her way to help us find good food, Tuscan adventures, and to fill us in on the culture. Our entire family loved our week in Tuscany.

      Tuscany at it's best

Left on 06/13/2011 for a stay in June 2011

The Borgo Santa Maria is located in a quiet countryside area, in the middle of a beautiful landscape of the Val d'Arno. We stayed in the Fontanina apartment, a very comfortable apartment with a porch that provides a beautiful view on the adjacent ancient church. Anna and Girogio are great hosts that really know what hospitality is all about. We especially appreciated the overall cleanliness of the estate. The pool is cleaned every day and upon arrival, the apartments are impeccable.

Surely a place to return to.

A Wonderful Location to Explore th Heart of Tuscany!

Left on 09/27/2010 for a stay in September 2010

We only had a week to explore Tuscany and found anna & Giorgio Marcato's lovely accommodations through Tripadvisor. We were pleasantly surprised that they were even better than expected. Annamaria & Giorgio are welcoming and charming hosts, and they go out of their way to help you explore this wonderful region of Italy. For example we expressed an interest in a particular area and the next morning, Annamaria had prepared a full itinarary with maps for us, but they also respected our need for ``family time``. The location is perfect, among the rolling Tuscan hills, close to the medieval village of Laterina and the typical Tuscan hilltop city of arezzo. We were lucky to book our stay during the first weekend of September. Annamaria and Giorgio booked us tickets for the `Giostra del Saraceno``, a joust or tournament which dates back to the Middle ages in arezzo, which is a week long extravaganza every June and September. We were 2 adults and 2 children and Giorgio made sure they had enough inflatables for their lovely pool for the children, but we are already planning to go back...just the two of us!!

      Heaven on Earth!

Left on 07/18/2010 for a stay in June 2010

What a beautiful place! Impeccably cared for in a stunning location in lovely countryside with birds and butterflies, Borgo Santa Maria is a real gem. Anna and Giorgio take such a pride in their lovely place and were always on hand whenever we needed them. Even though we were the only ones there, at the start of the season, Giorgio was up hours before us every day, making sure that the beautiful pool and gardens were spotless for us.

We stayed in La Fontanina which has a delightful sheltered terrace - with this and the lovely gardens, we didn't really need to go anywhere else!

The quality of the apartment was also first class, from the fittings and implements in the kitchen to the comfortable firm bed in the very spacious bedroom.

We can't wait to go back - and there is no higher accolade we could give!

We spent a wonderful peaceful week here with our 3 children. From the moment we arrived the Italian owners made us feel at home and we found everything we needed.
The apartment was spotlessly clean, cool and comfortable.
The children loved the pool and we were supplied with lots of large inflatables and free pool towels which made sitting in the lovely gardens very relaxing.
Anna and Giorgio were very helpful whilst being mindful of remaining in the background.
A great location and we were given all the advice and recommendations we needed for places to visit.
