Stockport, United KingdomCottage in a lovely setting, home from home
Left on 12/04/2012 for a stay in November 2012
Arrochar is a lovely village in breathtaking surroundings with plenty of little shops for supplies and a pub (The Village Inn) just 10/15 mins walk from the cottage which serves good food.
There is plenty to do in the village and surroundings without having to travel too far.
The Old Coach House is a lovely little whitewashed building, situated on a private drive with a couple of other houses. It has no real garden to speak of, but a drive big enough for a couple of cars and a little patch of grass with a bench that would have been perfect for sitting out had it of been warm! There are views of the Cobbler from here and from the sitting room.
The cottage backs onto woodland with little paths perfect for early morning wanderings and if your lucky the opportunity to spot deer and red squirrels (as I did!).
A little stream runs along side the property, and is a nice relaxing sound if you are sleeping in the second bedroom!
The property itself is very spacious, being open plan down stairs, and the bed rooms are cosy but big enough to be more than comfortable. All the bedding was clean and fresh. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need for a weeks stay if you want to eat in. Having a downstairs toilet and gear storage area was very handy, although the door to this area couldn't be opened easily from outside, meaning dirty gear had to be dragged through the house first.
Unfortunately, he cleanliness and general maintenance of the property let it down somewhat. The bath and en suite shower had both not been cleaned, and dirty cloths had been left in the kitchen, carpets/walls/sofas need general cleaning.
If the cleanliness issue is sorted, and some basic maintenance (e.g. leak over bedroom window mentioned in other review was still not fixed) this property would be perfect. -

We were absolutely delighted with the cottage, with the comfort and with the welcoming feel on opening the door for the first time. The view of the Cobbler from the front door was outstanding. The village of arrochar is charming with the local shops providing most of the day to day needs. A visit to the Village Inn is a must. I had occasion to speak to the owner twice. Each time he was extremely helpful. A return visit is a must.

We booked the holiday cottage as 2 adults and 2 small children.
When we arrived we were filled with dread at the state of the outside of the cottage. The external picture of the property on Sykes Cottages website and the pictures we booked our holiday based on, was not what we found when we arrived. We had telephoned the owner when we arrived who was helpful and had said that if there was anything we needed just to phone however, we felt that these were not things that could be rectified during our holiday.
The small lawned area at the front with a bench was overgrown, there was a dead rat next to the bench (which we didn't take a photo off because we removed it straight away before our children could see it!) The utility meter box doors were hanging off, the plants in the window boxes were all dead, the guttering was leaking above the main doors, the fence was broken, the walls discoloured and best of all there was a Volkswagen Beetle parked beside the house, mouldy and rusty and clearly hasn't been moved in some years as the moss around the tyres is built up and the road tax ran out in 2008!
Two of the three wheelie bins were crammed full, only the recycling bin was half empty and although it say's in the welcome brochure to put the bins out on a Friday, we chose not to take heavy bins down a steep slope when it was someone else's rubbish! As we arrived on Saturday we had no choice all holiday but to take our domestic waste elsewhere!
The ceiling in the bedroom with the en-suite shower was cracked and had holes in, lots of damp and mould around the window, seems clear there has been a water leak at some point and has never been repaired. The toilet in the main bathroom could only be flushed ever 2/3 hours because it wouldn't fill up. The oven was dirty. However, the rest of the cottage was of a good standard.
We booked this cottage because Sykes Cottages website advertises no pets and our Daughter has asthma, however when we arrived we noticed that in the welcome pack it stated that there was a pet gate in the utility that could be used to confine them and sure enough there was.
We complained to Sykes Cottages who were extremely helpful, they contacted the owner and after a period of time we were offered a 15% refund.
Please check before booking that that the Owner and Sykes Cottages have followed up on our feedback and rectified the problems.
The area is fantastic, the views great and if the outside of this property was as great as the inside it would have been fantastic! -

Directions and key collection no problems.
No heating on at arrival therefore cottage freezing.
I know not required, but would have been nice if a few basics were around e.g. a toilet roll.
No really useful maps or local info and no visitors book for feedback. -

The Booking and check in procedure were very easy and the owner gave great directions.
The Cottage was lovely bright and roomy but still very cosy. The location was perfect for exploring and we both felt very relaxed and away from it all. The Village inn a short walk away is an excellant place to eat with a log burning fire. We loved this holiday for the location and the cottage and would definetely come back again.

The cottage facilities were excellent however we had serious problems getting the keys. As we stayed in cottage in the highlands the previous week I was not able to contact the owner due to poor mobile phone coverage. When we tried to contact the owner on the Saturday we were directed through to his answer machine. By 5pm when we realised he was not responding we tried to contact the Sykes office but that was shut. We were later informed that the owner was out of the country! We spent the night in the car as the hotels in the area were full. On the Sunday we contacted the office and were able access the cottage.
Some arrangement must be made to prevent this problem from happening to other customers i.e. the owner could record a new answer-phone message informing customers to call the Sykes office, or an clearer guidelines given on the confirmation of booking form.
