What Past Guests Are Saying
Pinellas Park, FL
The Perfect Christmas
We spent Christmas week at Fox Den and it could not have been more perfect. The cabin was so cozy and warm, and we even got some snow, which is a big deal for a couple of Floridians! We will definitely be back!
New Smyrna Beach, Florida
We arrived at the Fox Den cabin in the Wolf Laurel development with anticipation; a week later, we left disappointed. The cabin itself was fine, nice amenities such as ping pong table, dart board and foosball. The view on the porch, though very shady in the height of summer, was peaceful and lovely. But the condition of the cabin was unacceptable. The carpet (not ideal anyway, in a rental) was stained and dirty. There were cobwebs everywhere, the windows & screens were filthy, even the stovetop was grimy. The bedding smelled musty and the mattresses had an unclean odor. The only window in the master bedroom was broken and could not be opened, or repaired. (No fresh breezes or morning sounds!) Calls were made to Carolina Mornings (the rental agency) and though staff was sincere, they were slow on the upswing. It took 3 days and a lot of phone calls to have the place cleaned and we had to insist that the carpet be shampooed (by saying we'd find someone and bill CM).
We looked at other rentals in the area, and they were much nicer and much cheaper. The amenities in Wolf Laurel were good, except the pool was closed for repairs and the alternate was too far away to walk to or get to easily (up a very steep mountain).
We love the NC mountains and it was our 5th summer vacationing in the asheville area, but our last using Carolina Mornings! They refunded our $85 pet fee and gave us $75 to use on future rentals, but it won't be utilized. The cabin should never have been rented in the condition it was in, and Carolina Mornings' customer service left a lot to be desired.
Our family enjoyed the trip to Fox Den. I was starting a new job, week 1, which resulted in a trip to asheville for the week, and the family came along. It marked the end of a bad journey, and the start of a good one. The pivotal juncture was enhanced by the serenity of the cabin and the magnificent splendor of the surroundings.

We appreciate your wonderful review of Fox Den! It's a serene and beautiful cabin (especially the stone fireplace). We hope you and your family were able to spend some time enjoying the view and the village swimming pool. Congratulations on your new work opportunity, we wish you the best! When you're ready to return to the Asheville area, remember that returning guests receive a discount from Carolina Mornings. We hope to hear from you again soon! --The Carolina Mornings Team
Our weekend was relaxing!
Thanks for an exciting weekend. It was exactly what our family needed.

A relaxing and comfortable week in the woods.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Fox Den for four days last summer for our wedding anniversary. The accommodations were excellent and we enjoyed swimming in the pool and taking hikes on the appalachian Trail. The cabin was big enough to really spread out, and included everything we needed to have a great four days away from home.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 01/28/2012
Thank you for your wonderful review of Fox Den! It is a beautiful and relaxing property (love that stone fireplace). We hope you were able to spend some time just gazing out at the tremendous view. We're so glad you had a great time for your anniversary here, and enjoyed the swimming pool and hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail. The Carolina Mornings team looks forward to working with you during your next NC mountain vacation.
We enjoyed staying at Fox Den, and it was very economical as opposed to comparable area hotels for the two rooms we would have had to book. The cabin offered us more privacy than a hotel and we love having a full kitchen when we travel. We hiked up to the appalachian trail and enjoyed the fall foliage, which we don't get to experience at home in Florida. We would like to return in the summer to take advantage of the river activities we passed.
What we liked least:
* The extreme remoteness of the area. Without even a convenience store, were too far from the basic necessities. For example, the cabin was stocked with only one roll of toilet paper. When we ran out, it was a 30 minute drive to get another roll, and that was from a gas station.
* The cabin was tiny. It has 3 bedrooms, but access to the loft bedroom was by ladder. It was a good value for the money, but you do sacrifice some comfort.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 03/05/2011
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Fox Den! We are so glad that you took advantage of how close the Appalachian Trail is to Fox Den, and that you enjoyed the beautiful artistry of autumn in the mountains. Please contact us again when you are heading to the Asheville area- with over 90 properties, we do offer properties that are not as private and secluded, and properties that have more space. Give us a call and we can point you in the right direction!
Great escape in the snow!
We loved Fox Den with it's view and perfect fireplace.
Our week in the snow was just great.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 02/26/2011
We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your week in the snow at Fox Den! Please do come back for a visit, as the NC mountains are wonderful in every season.
Vacation with my Brother
- The cabin smelled like a mildewy lake house as opposed to a log cabin - hopefully that can be fixed. This was probably my biggest complaint, as that log cabin smell is one of my favorite things about going to the mountains.
- The lighing on the front porch was very poor (only one light and it was on the edge of the porch as opposed to the middle) and it was at the level of the porch floor, not overhead. This could also be fixed.
- The fire place was great.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 11/18/2010
Thank you for your feedback and we have taken measures to extinguish the mildew-like smell. All lighting is important and having adequate exterior lights is crucial and are rectifying this issue as well. I hope you enjoyed the gorgeous mountain views and the amenities at Wolf Laurel Resort. Please know all repeat guests will receive $10 off their next reservation with Carolina Mornings.
I would recommend Fox Den to anyone as long as you are not afraid of driving up a very steep driveway (was informed about this before we went). We loved the house and the Wolf Laurel resort. I would also recommend to anyone to contact Carolina Mornings if they are looking to stay near the asheville area - very professional and this may sound corney...I felt like I was cared about as a customer...kindness through the phone:)
Response from Carolina Mornings - 11/15/2010
Thank you Kelly for your wonderful feedback. You certainly made all of us at Carolina Mornings very happy to hear you felt "cared for." We take our jobs to heart and really do want our guests to have the best experience. This is what I love about my co-workers and am so glad you felt our caring. Thank you again for sharing and please come back soon!
Great three days skiing at Wolf Laurel, Mars Hill, NC
House and location were perfect for my family of 4 during this late December getaway to play in the snow -- our Christmas gift to our boys, 8 and 12. Fox Den is private and cozy but has a great direct view over the next mountain where the Wolf Laurel ski resort lay and where we spent most all our waking hours. Carolina Mornings, property management, were easy to deal with and Fox Den delivered everything we expected and wanted. We did wish for some alternate lighting -- the flourescent bulbs were very harsh for the dining, living, and kitchen areas -- but we do appreciate the need to minimize the kilowatts.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 02/26/2010
What a great Christmas gift you have given your boys!! We are so happy that you had such a fun time! We will offer the idea of a different light fixture to the owners, while still being able to keep the same bulbs; thank you so much for your feedback! Please visit us again!!
Just what the doctor ordered
We spent three relaxing days at Fox Den in early August 2009. The home was
clean and ready when we arrived and the directions for getting there were
clear and easy to follow. Fox Den is nestled up in the tall pines which was a
welcome relief from the hot Texas summer. The four of us were very
comfortable with Fox Den's rustic furnishings - my daughter especially
enjoyed the bed in the loft and the dartboard! We didn't get a chance to try
the Wolfe Laurel pool - we spent our limited time in Asheville and on the
nearby Appalachian Trail - but it looked inviting; perhaps if it had been open
past 7pm we could have enjoyed a quick dip.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 11/30/2009
Dear 4 Texans,
We are so happy that you were able to come up and spend some time enjoying the cool summer breezes up in the mountains of western NC.
I am so sorry to hear about Wolfe Laurel's pool closing so early in the summer. I was not aware of their pool hours. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Fort Bragg, NC
Overall, we had a great weekend at Fox Den. The house has a beautiful porch, comfortable furniture, a full kitchen and all the appliances you'd need.
Tips for a successful visit:
1) Drivers of sedans or other small passenger cars -- be advised that the driveway has a steep grade and may scratch or dent trim. The bumper of our Matrix was a casualty, no matter how slow or carefully we descended.
2) Fox Den is far from most restaurants. The general store is your only option, so prepare in advance to cook in or eat while in Asheville or other.
Response from Carolina Mornings - 09/11/2009
Thank you so much for your feedback and support for other visitor considering Fox Den!
We appreciate your thoughtfulness!
Please come back and visit again!
Maybe good for dog owners
The area outside of the house was beautiful, however, the house smelled like dogs. I guess I should have expected that knowing it was "pet friendly." Not much sunlight coming in so it was a little dark & dreary, and cold.
We also did not appreciate a phone call at 8 or 9am (the first morning we were there) from the property manager telling us a dryer repair man needed to come out to fix the dryer that day. Ugh, not what we wanted to deal with after arriving late the night before (and hoping to sleep in).
We really loved the home and its location. Very comfortable and cozy--a
FANTASTIC place for our two 10 year olds--they loved the loft. computer, tv
and games (perfect after a long day of sightseeing or hiking)! Nice pond down
the drive and close to great hiking, although we couldn't seem to find where
the picture with the vista view was taken... we will definitely be back very
Quiet with a Great View
My wife and I rented this cabin for the weekend as a quiet and inspiring place to write. It was perfect. Great amenities and a spectacular view. We loved it and hope to come back soon for a longer stay.
Relaxing Winter Retreat
3 wonderful days of playing and hiking in the snow. This cabin has everything a small family desires for getting away from the world and enjoying mother nature. We are ready to go back.
Great retreat - relaxing / fun
Our experience was to remember, we enjoy 9 beautiful days. the cabin is secluded but close to plenty of entretainment for the family. Small and cozy with the necesary supplies to make it comfortable just like home. We were there for our winter vacation, but will definitely will have to try it in the summer. We'll be back!!!!!
Having just returned from Iraq our family needed a quiet vacation. This was the place. The whole family loved the cabin, the nieghbors were great and friendly. As was the staff. Our days were filled with adventure and our nights were family fun. I can't say enough about this place. I can't wait till next year as we plan on returning.
EAST NEW MARKET, MD
My family and I had a very relaxing vacation in this beautiful chalet. The kids loved sleeping in the loft and the game table. We all enjoyed the dart board and wonderful veiws from the deck. It had all the comforts of home and none of the headaches. The location was centralized for us to get all the sightseeing in that we wanted to do. We truly enjoyed staying in the beautiful and relaxing setting.
Beautiful and Relaxing
The property had a beautiful view, the lodging was equally nice, and a short drive to Ashville, which has great shopping and dining. Definitely a location we will vacation at again.
Zac n Lea
This Cabin is in a beautiful location. Very thoughtfully set up! Plenty
of entertainment, clean and cozy! This is where I proposed to my wife
after a nice dinner and some wine by the fire. Need I say more?!
A wonderful way to enjoy the Holidays!
We had a wonderful stay in Fox Den Cabin. We brought a Christmas Tree, baked cookies, roasted a turkey, and enjoyed the fire. We were fortunate enough to get a dusting of snow the day after Christmas. The view was breathtaking. We enjoyed, snow tubing, visits to Ashville, and dinner at the Wolf Laurel Ski Lodge while we were there. Deer crossed in front of our cabin just about every morning. All in all, it was a very scenic and relaxing vacation.
Rustic cabin: great for kids and pets!
We are the proud owners of the Fox Den Cabin. I think the reason we get such a great response from our guests is that we use the cabin ourselves throughout the year on vacation just like our guests! And just like our guests, we want a clean, safe, fun place where Mom and Dad can relax, the kids can play inside and out, and Rover can mark his territory. Ha! Every time we go, we enjoy the same things that our guests can: the great hikes, 'smores by the fireplace, the great views, and some solace in the quiet woods! And even though I've been to the local General Store a hundred times, I always look forward to going back!
