  Nice relaxing apartment in the outskirts of atenas

  I'm sorry I only just now noticed my review didn't post! We stayed at Fred & Roxana's Monte Real apartment for a month, March to april 2012. Due to a family emergency, we had to arrive a week later than planned, but they were very flexible and understanding. The apartment we stayed in is actually a small 2-story house, and is really quite private. It is set into a lovey garden, and it was so nice to sit on the balcony listening to the thousands of birds every evening. Although it's a good 20 minute walk into town (and it does get hot there!), a one-way taxi trip is only about $2, a bargain. Monte Real is a nice neighborhood in the outskirts of atenas, which is a quiet, picturesque mid-size town (not at all "touristy"). From the atenas bus station we were able to get transportation to pretty much anywhere in Costa Rica. Fred and Roxana recommended alternate ways to get places, and also helped with destinations. We loved going into atenas for supper at one of the local sodas (try the Soda Tres Hermanas in the local Mercado for truly authentic and cheap tico food), then sitting in the plaza watching all the families cool off in the evening. Fred will meet you at the airport for a small charge, which is a good way to do it if you are new to the area. I can't speak as to the meals they serve; I enjoy cooking my own food, and since we had a small but adequate kitchen, that's mostly what I did. All in all, a good stay, with very nice hosts!

  Comfy and quiet B & B

  The B & B is located on the edge of town, close enough to walk in or take a short taxi ride. The English-speaking hosts were very helpful and pleasant and went the extra mile (or kilometer!) to help us get oriented in Costa Rica, as this was the first place we stayed. The breakfasts were great, and after our six-week tour of Costa Rica we decided they were the best in Costa Rica! Authentic, delicious, and filling! We enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.
