Huntsville, Texas USAHome away from Home
Left on 07/08/2012 for a stay in June 2012
I stayed at George's apartment for one week (7 nights) and was very pleased. The apartment consumes the fifth and top floor of a residential building adjacent to the Platonic academy and park. The neighborhood is a bit worn but reasonably quiet and seemingly safe. There is a bus stop (#051) beside the building that will deliver you to the metro (subway) stations at Metaxourghio (10 minutes) or Omonia (15 minutes); another 10 minutes on the subway will take to or near most tourist sites. There is a sweet shop (bakery and ice cream) on the ground level and a small convenience store and gyros shop across the street. There also is a spar supermarket five blocks down the street.
This is George's home and, for me, it became my home away from home. (George vacates to a friend's place when he rents out.) The photos and descriptions he has posted are helpful and accurate. The apartment is appealing and comfortable. I loved being able to wash clothes, have a fridge and freezer, make my own breakfast, sleep in a double bed, have wireless, and enjoy the huge terrace. The television is huge and the air conditioning works well. (I always turned the a/c off when I left for the day.) There is an office with a sofa bed that would accommodate 1-2 additional people.
George is very hospitable and thoughtful. Upon arrival, he gave me a packet of household info, tourist flyers and maps, and a ticket to use for my first bus trip. George returned twice during the week to feed his finch and water the plants. The price is comparable or perhaps a bit more than what you'd pay for a 3-4 star hotel. I think the question comes down to this: would you rather stay in a hotel closer to the city's center with fewer amenities and more noise or stay 30 minutes away (via bus and subway) with all the comforts of home. For me, I picked comfort over convenience...and I have no regrets.
