Description from the manager
Welcome to Austin and the famous 78704 zip code. But it’s the former owner of this house that give this property the deepest Austin roots we can imagine. Tommy Shannon, the bass player for the music group Double Trouble, is the previous owner of this property. Tommy is best known for being the long-time bassist for the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of Austin’s musical heroes.
There’s even a signed Tommy Shannon poster in the house. So you can be sure there’s a lot of Austin music history draping the walls of The House of Rock.
With four bedrooms, this is a wonderful place for a larger family or group to stay and play toge...Read more

What Past Guests Are Saying
Will Definitely be Back!
From the moment I inquired about this property, to the time I left, I was overwhelmed by the level of customer service, attention to detail and quality of product.
The preliminary stage, done through email, was so easy and informative.
The house did not disappoint. Clever, clean, and very accommodating for our group of 7.
We will definitely be renting that home again, or, if it's not available, another one of their homes.
The House that Rocks!
Great house in funky south austin. Very clean and recently remodeled. This house was a perfect fit for my family of four during aCL. The kids loved the chess/checker board in the back yard. The house has a neat history that would be appreciated by any music buff.
Austin (but we currently live in China)
convenient and comfortable
We are a family of 4 with a 12 year old Golden Retriever and The House of Rock was a great place for us to stay to be near family but still have our own space. We stayed at the house multiple times and it was a perfect size and location for our stay as well as the owner welcomed our family pet with open arms. We love austin and having the opportunity to stay in the heart of this wonderful city in such a unique and comfortable home was our pleasure. We would highly recommend this property for your stay in austin.
The Maag Menagerie
Awesome house - perfect size and location
I went to austin with my husband and 1 year old son. His best friend, his wife and 2 year old son met us there. Also, my in laws met us there. It was so great having a whole house. My in laws stayed in the largest bedroom which is separted from the other bedrooms by the living room/dining room/kitchen. The boys shared a room.
The backyard was so nice. The boys had an enclosed area and loved the chess board (hours of entertainment). The house was very baby friendly. Also we paid $25 extra and had a high chair, pack n play w/ sheets, and a baby gate (which we didn't need to use b/c the house was so baby friendly) waiting for us when we arrived.
It's about 5 minutes from SoCo and 10 min from downtown. Truly enjoyed the house.

So happy you enjoyed House of Rock! We think it's a fabulous house and the positive feedback is always appreciated! Come back and see us again soon!
A great house that suited a young family plus guests
We (my husband, 6 month old son and I) loved the House of Rock and had a fabulous two-week stay! The 4 bed/2 bath and open plan layout made it easy to host a revolving door of guests (first weekend: two more couples and a 4 year old; then my parents; then another mom and baby). The master suite is a great size and since Vacation Cake offered a baby equipment package, we didn't have to bring a travel cot/high chair with us. One night we used the grill for burgers and corn, and we had a lovely Easter egg hunt in the front garden on Easter Sunday.
The neighborhood is quiet and residential, which suited us perfectly. We walked to several local spots (don't miss Torchy's Tacos; brunch at Polvo's was also good) and also just around the neighborhood with baby. There's a good HEB less than a 5 minute drive away on Oltorf and South Congress and we easily visited lots of local hotspots (Zilker Park, Town Lake, Whole Foods, etc.) so everything is very convenient. We would definitely rent this house again!
The main reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is the back yard, which was a bit overgrown during our stay and not so usable for the kids.
Response from Jay Reynolds, Lauren Bard & Ric Torres - 04/18/2013
So glad you had a great time. We've just switched lawn care companies to deal with the inconsistency in grooming of the backyard. The new company should be doing a better job of it.
Great house, as described. Coffee beans ready to grind, plenty of clean towels. Shampoo and soap were in the showers. A coffee shop is just over a block away. Worked well for parents and three adult children with significant others. It was One small caution for the vain people out there: The house has no blow dryer, so pack your own.
Response from Jay Reynolds, Lauren Bard & Ric Torres - 03/29/2013
No hair dryer? I'll go replace them right away. The hair dryer is (oddly) the one item that gets accidentally "stolen" the most often. We speculate that in the rush of packing, the husband thinks it''s the wife's hair dryer and tosses it in the suitcase. Happens all the time. I guess that's why big hotel chains bolt them to the wall. If you'd told us it was missing while you were here, I would have brought it right over.
So glad your stay was otherwise lovely. Please come on back anytime!
A good austin option
This property is generally quite good.
* Nice concrete floors; easy to clean and silent
* Ceiling fans throughout (central a/C too)
* Spacious parking
* Nice shaded backyard with chess set, BBQ, patio furniture
* Lots of dishes and silverware provided, including plastic ones; perfect for kids
* Responsive property managers
* Soundproofing between rooms could be better.
* Ugly water leakage in ceiling of master bedroom bath
* Thermostats are programmable, so if you make a temperature change, it'll be automatically overridden in a few hours
* Close to 1st and to South Congress, but no sidewalks in neighborhood and not quite walkable -- you'll do better if you have a car
* Hot water temperature is set extremely high, posing a danger for small children who may turn on only the hot tap
Response from Jay Reynolds, Lauren Bard & Ric Torres - 03/12/2013
Yes, there was a roof leak in a huge storm about a week before your stay. We had the roof functionally repaired before you arrived but had to wait for the sheetrock to dry completely before we could do the cosmetic repair. It'll be complete this week. (mid-March 2013).
Thank you so much for letting us know about the water temperature. I'll have my maintenance guy turn it down while he's there for the ceiling repair.
So glad you enjoyed your stay -- come on back anytime!
Well located. Very nice layout. Great new room and patio!
Jay has been very reactive to our needs and did everything to make surevwe had a great stay. House is very well layed out with 3 bedroomsvincluding a great master bedroom, and comfortable living areas. Patio outside great too with a big chess board. Se did not use the large tv nor the largevselection of dvd and hooks but it was good it was available!
Wichita Falls, TX
A nice family Thanksgiving weekend.
Loved the house and how it's been updated and cleverly decorated. Spent Thanksgiving and weekend there. The layout worked perfectly for our family (6 adults, a 12-year-old and a 5-mo-old baby). Nice backyard, too. Played lots of chess and checkers!
Great condo in downtown austin
Stayed here for 10 days or so in april 2012 and found it the perfect home-from-home. Great location for downtown's attractions and not too far a walk to SoCo and Zilker Park/Barton Springs. Accommodation is very well equipped, nicely laid out and designed, clean and comfortable. Service from Jay and the team at Vacation Cake was great. Apartment is safe and secure in a gated community that requires an access code for entry.
Do be mindful that the apartment is on the third floor and there is no lift/elevator so may not be suitable for all. Also its downtown location and proximity to 6th St means it can be noisy, particularly at weekends. This was not a problem for us but might be for some.
I would heartily recommend this apartment to anyone, particularly those looking to enjoy the thriving night-life and live music scene in austin.
A fantastic place in an amazing location
This flat has got absolutely everything you need - and more. 2 comfortable bedrooms, one with an ensuite, and a sofabed that's large enough for 2 girls (the mattress on it is a bit soft but ok for a few days).
The most remarkable thing is that you really don't need to buy anything for your trip, unlike in other apartments we have stayed at. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, sufficient glasses, plates and cutlery, it was all there.
The location, literally one minute from the busy downtown bar scene on 6th St, is absolutely perfect.
If we ever return to austin, we'll certainly stay here again.
Great location in downtown austin
Perfect for a four day visit for our son's wedding. The rehearsal dinner, wedding and reception were all within walking distance. The condo was clean and well-supplied. The only drawback to the third floor walk-up was when we were carting suitcases and other heavy items up and down the stairs. The shower head in the master bath leaves a lot to be desired! Jay was great to work with and we had a wonderful time in austin!
Response from Jay Reynolds, Lauren Bard & Ric Torres - 04/05/2012
So glad you enjoyed your stay. I'll send our handyman over to see to the shower head pronto!
This is an excellent condo & in a great location!
When we arrived the spot was immaculate, modern, clean & well equipped. It was nicer than expected & had most things we needed (excl food!) already there. Being in such a modern & locked facility added an extra element of confidence to our travels. Sooo much better than the hotel room we almost ended up taking!
The location is perfect. We were within walking distance to all the 6th street & beyond, locations that we wanted. Austin is an excellent small city & very walking friendly.
I would not hesitate to recommend this rental to anyone, & I will be staying here on my next trip to austin for sure!
Beautiful condo in a great location
We stayed at this lovely condo in downtown austin for 6 nights in Feb. My husband was attending a workshop during the days, and I was working via the internet in the condo. In the evenings, we would walk to dinner at one of several restaurants within a 2-3 block radius of the condo. Jay and Lauren could not have been nicer or more accommodating. The condo is beautifully decorated, comfortable, convenient and quiet. We enjoyed every moment of our stay.
We had a wonderful stay at Om Sweet Om. It is so conveniently located and well within walking distance to the capital and the campus in addition to downtown attractions. We needed extra blankets and I contacted Jay & Lauren and they had blankets delivered to us within the hour. Truly a wonderful space and location. Safe parking space also.
