Description from the owner
Just a mile away from downtown, this sweet little house makes a great home base for exploring Austin. Downtown and east 6th street are an easy walk through a great neighborhood with true Austin character. The house is one block from Cesar Chavez which is a growing commercial district with great bars and restaurants (Weather Up, Las Cazuelas, Mr Natural), coffee shops (Cenote), and retail (Domy Books, Big Red Sun, Charm School Vintage). This side of town is also full of artist studios and small galleries which are often holding open houses or events. Pedicabs are easily available and a bike rental shop is just four blocks away. Just south are...Read more

We stayed here for 10 days, and fell in love with this cute little place and its wonderful neighbourhood. For half of the stay there were just 2 of us in the house, however we were 5 for the other half and all felt very comfortable. It's open, comfortable, well appointed and everyone appreciated having their own bedroom. The backyard is great.
If you aren't walkers, I wouldn't recommend planning to walk downtown. We are walkers, and it took us about 40 minutes. There are also lots of bike rentals in austin, which would be a great way to commute about town. There are, however, plenty of restaurants within 20 minutes of the house. It is also close to Lady Bird Lake and East 6th street, which has lots of restos, shops and food carts.
In short, this is a fabulous, clean, well-located and comfortable place to stay! -

We booked the house for a 6 day trip to austin to see the sights and listen to some music. The house is very comfortable and is the most completely stocked rental that I have ever been in. They have everything that you need in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry. And the cooking gear in the kitchen is in excellent condition.
The house is about 1.5 miles east of downtown but it is easy walking on the path down by the lake or more directly down Cesar Chavez ave.
I tend to walk everyplace so this isn't for everyone but my friends and I were often out walking very late at night and felt no discomfort in the neighborhood. I often ran into folks out walking late and it seemed like people on bikes were always around.
But, if you don't want to walk, the bus runs on Cesar Chavez and stops a block from the house and runs late. It cost $1 for the ride and you pay on the bus.
Anyway, when I am again in austin I hope that its not booked and that I will be able to stay here.
Info on Public Transit from the airport if you want it
If you are flying into town and want to avoid a costly taxi ride ($25) the Metro airport bus (the 100 bus) runs from the airport to downtown and then up to the University. It leaves the airport every half hour. You get off at the first stop after crossing Lady Bird Lake on the Congress St bridge and walk to the corner of 1st Street and Congress (1st Street changes names to Cesar Chavez as you head out of town). Transfer to the 17 bus eastbound on 1st Street/Cesar Chavez ave. and 5 minutes later you are a block from the house. Total travel time was 40 minutes for my trip - cost $2. -

I've been to austin several times and stayed in hotels near the freeway, on South Congress and at The Driskill. This was by far my best austin experience because this cute little house makes daily living so easy and comfortable. The location is ideal - near downtown - but also makes it super easy to get anywhere. The talented young architects who are restoring this property are putting extra thought and care into every decision and it all shows. This will definitely be my "go-to" for future austin visits.
