DIRECTIONS & TRAVEL Information
Located 5 hours from San Francisco & 4 ½ hours from Los Angeles. GPS is not reliable in this area. A map will be provided upon making your reservation.
Mountain roads are wind-y, and some people get sick. You could use an over-the-counter motion sickness cure, or we like to chew on candied ginger to relieve symptoms.
(see also “winter” at end)
GAS & FOOD shopping
Fill your vehicle with gas before you start ascending into the mountains from the Valley. Gas stations up here are scarce, and prices are even higher than elsewhere. On Hwy 180 the last gas is at Squaw Valley 40 min away, and another just before the Dunlap turn off. Both have convenience stores. Last gas coming from the south is Woodlake, about 40 minutes away. There is also gas inside Kings Canyon about 15 minutes beyond the main entrance shops at the Kings Canyon Lodge.
Shop for groceries before coming up the mountain; there are no real stores up here. From Hwy 180 in Fresno, exit Clovis Avenue, turn right onto Clovis, then left at Kings Canyon Road to shop at Vons or SaveMart. From Hwy 198, there is a SaveMart off the Ben Maddox exit in Visalia. Two local stores have limited supplies: Pinehurst Lodge in Pinehurst, and the Grant Grove store in the Park.

Pets are permitted only with prior approval. A $10 per pet, per night fee applies. All pets must
be on leashes at all times. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up of any/all pet refuse. Pets are not allowed on furniture at any time. Any evidence of pets on furniture may incur extra cleaning fees. All pets must be up to date on rabies vaccinations and all other vaccinations. Heartworm preventive is highly recommended. All pets are to be treated with Advantage or similar topical flea and tick repellent three (3) days prior to arrival. Fleas and ticks are rampant in this area and can cause harmful/fatal illness to humans and pets.
“LIONS, TIGERS and BEARS – Oh My!”
Well, no tigers, but there are mountain lions and bears in the hills, and bobcat has been spotted on the property. These houses are in the mountains. The natural world is part of the experience. There are wild boar from time to time, and even the local ranchers find their cows astray in the road. There are rattle snakes on the hills, but seeing them is not that common. Avoid walking in deep brush, stay on the paths, and exercise normal caution. Bugs are part of the mountains. Mostly little pesky gnats and harmless spiders are commonly seen. Tarantulas are around, seen more rarely. Again, use normal awareness. And if you are sensitive to bites, bring a topical repellent.
The property includes a 2 acre pond, fondly called the lake. It is clean but rustic and undeveloped. You are welcome to swim, fish (it is stocked – bring your own gear), and use the row boat w/paddle. – bring your own life vests.) There is a lake-side deck with fire-pit for roasting marshmallows / hot dogs (firewood & roasting sticks provided), a communal BBQ and the lakeside volley-ball court.
The fire station is just across the road and has a paramedic – they are only open during fire season. Dial 911 for emergencies. A helicopter may be sent if warranted. Medical clinics are about 40 minutes away: to the north in Squaw Valley, to the south in Woodlake.
A fourteen (14) day notice is required for cancellation. Cancellations or changes that result in a shortened stay made within 14 days of the arrival date forfeit any advance payment or deposit.
Cancellation or early departure does not warrant any refund of deposit.
Late FALL & WINTER
HEATING – House 1 has propane & wood stove. Studio House 2 has only wood stove. Houses 3 & 4 have propane. A Winter Heating Charge of $15 per night is applicable during the winter months.
ROAD CONDITIONS - Late fall, winter, and early spring guests should be aware that it could snow at or below (and certainly above!) our elevation of 3000 feet. If you are coming in the wintertime, be sure to carry chains in your vehicle, which may be required to travel safely. Also be aware that thick Tule fog often settles in the San Joaquin Valley during the winter. The fog can be avoided if you travel in the late morning through early evening.
