Eixample is Catalan for "extension", meaning an extension of the old Barcelona city. The grid pattern of Eixample was designed by urban planning visionary, Ildefons Cerdà, who saw the benefit in utilizing octagonal blocks, allowing all residents easy access to the city center. The area boasts some of the best Basque tapas in Barcelona, and some renowned restaurants serving the most delicious paella! Nestled in between Eixample Izquierdo and Plaça Espanya lies the historical Joan Miró Park. Also known as Parc l'Escorxador, (Catalan for slaughterhouse), it holds great historical value as it was the first large urban park after Franco's regime.
