NorthumberlandWonderful location and cottage
Left on 12/10/2012 for a stay in September 2012
My fiancee and I loved this cottage. The location is pretty unique, a cottage alone in a huge field with stunning 360 degree views. Fantastic! Plenty of parking space out front and the fixtures and fittings within are tasteful and pretty luxurious. The wet room, bathroom and kitchen/lounge are particularly great. The utility, dishwasher and large fridge with ice maker were added bonuses, although the ice maker made some alarming noises late at night! We enjoyed some cosy afternoons and evenings in front of the fantastic fireplace/large TV, a very romantic place, take lots of candles, wine and chill out. Barnard Castle and Richmond are decent visits. There were some unusual additions to this holiday. Mainly the cattle, dozens of them and able to come within feet of our windows. They were endless entertainment and seemed to enjoy watching us as much as we did them. We both felt the owners should provide some tips on a laminated sheet inside the cottage on how to handle the cows i.e. getting out of the car to open/close the 2 gates - or when some of the herd decided to stop on the trail that leads to the cottage to stare-out our approaching car. We managed (took several blasts of the horn) but a couple of times it was a bit daunting, cows can be dangerous if unsettled. Those with faint hearts may want to ask what animals will be in the field during their stay. Other niggles included a fairly hard double mattress and very creaky bed (part of the charm?), a missing kitchen blind (not nice at night despite the quiet location), underfloor heating that took an age to get going (once it does boy does it work - but then it takes a while to cool down). We also didn't like the extra 2 weeny curtainless windows (bedroom) as the dawn light wakes you... at dawn! Not what we wanted for a holiday thanks. We had to stuff magazines/paper up against those to get some creaky sleep. But, despite these things, we will fondly remember one of the loveliest holidays we have had so far.

We arrived and were greeted by the owner who made us feel at home right away. The cottage was excellent along with the location. We had lots of information about the local area in the cottage and we made full use of the accomodation and the area. We had a great stay and look forward to going back in the future.

LedsA superb find!

An excellent location, close to the village but without any neighbours. The underfloor heating was a bonus, no real need to have the heating on high. The utility room on the way in was great for washing muddy boots and the dog before entering the living room. Plenty of space for storage, the walk-in shower was fantastic and a separate bathroom upstairs. I always take a holiday for my birthday, and this was extremely memorable. The George & Dragon in the village do excellent food, as you would expect from trained chefs.
Stay here, unwind and go home refreshed. -

We had a great week at the Black Barn, a lovely property with excellent attention to detail in both facilities and furnishings. The downstairs wet room was really appreciated and with a deep luxurious bath upstairs its your choice, quick shower or long soak, brilliant.
Good quality utensils and plenty of them meant not having to think about 'can we make this', 'have they got a ...?' everything you could think of is there.
The small utility room was a bonus, having somewhere to dry off our dog after a walk before letting her back into the main rooms was great.
The location is brilliant, sitting watching the sheep and horses wandering past the windows, not being over looked from any angle, being able to take the dog for a walk from the door of the property, such luxury!
Its close proximity to Barnard Castle (10 minutes in the car) for picking up the newspapers or a bit of shopping and 5 minutes in the car for forest walks, perfect.
Black Barn is the first property we've used that we'd return to and we've recommended the property to friends and family what more can we say!

Left on 10/22/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Lovely well-equipped warm country cottage, very modern interior, kitchen had everything in it you could possible need (we had family visit us and were able to have 8 people for dinner and had plenty of crockery for this).Especially loved the free standing bath with my glass of wine and candles, just what you need after a day in the countryside. Enjoyed playing the board games provided with the children. Would not hesitate to book again as it was the nicest cottage we have stayed in in this area.
