IpswichGreat romantic break
Left on 02/14/2013 for a stay in February 2013
The communication with Mr Holt was excellent, that with Gite De France was no more than OK. The house was in excellent order - probably one of the best equipped we have met and the lady with the key met us promptly and showed us round the property. Unfortunately the instructions for the appliances were not available but this will be rectified. Not a major issue, but would have avoided domestic disagreements. As a mature couple, the reason we chose this place was the sauna, hot-tub (not what I would have called a hot tub, but an excellent spa bath with space for two) & log-fire. There was a reasonable selection of books and Dvd's. The setting close to the stream was beautiful and would be great in the summer when you would be able to sit outside. Had we had better clothing we could have done some great treks in the snow-covered forests.

Despite arriving in pouring rain, we had a lovely reception at the door. The house looked really lovely and I'd did not disappoint on entering. The kitchen was very well equipped and had a lovely view out over the stream below. The living room was nice and spacious and plenty of room to sit and relax. There were plenty of leaflets to give ideas for days out and there was a well stocked book shelf too. The master bedroom was very comfortable and the children (aged 3 and 5) slept well in the bunk beds. The sauna downstairs was an added bonus especially as it was a particularly wet week.
Barr is a lovely quaint town with a number of good bakeries and shops. We ate very well at Caveau Folie Marco. Food shopping was a delight at the Super U in Gertwiller. The rest of our holiday was spent revisiting old haunts as we used to live in Molshiem. We did have a wonderful family day out at the Volerie des aigles in Kintzheim as well as the Montagne des Singes. We also headed to the Parc des Cigognes in Kintzheim. The views nearby were stunning. Having not had any children when we lived in alsace we were unsure whether there would be enough to keep them occupied but there is an abundance of activities. (Modern swimming pool in Obernai also good for a rainy day). We had a lovely stay and would highly recommend the beautiful blue house in Barr!
Thanks for making it such a fun stay. -

Response from Simon Holt - 01/26/2013

Left on 01/20/2013 for a stay in October 2012
We had the most wonderful few months staying in this Gite, The house is so clean and comfortable with everything you need or want. The kitchen is modern and well equipped, the lounge/dining is great, with very comfortable lounges in a lovely bright setting. The main bedroom is spacious with a bed that is just too comfortable! Bathroom is modern, roomy and the spa bath is so good to relax in, as is the sauna in the basement. A log fire in the lounge adds to the ambiance and works particularly well - good to curl up on one of the lounges with a delicious alsace wine or two and enjoy the fire! Plenty of chopped wood was on hand too. We enjoyed the sound of the stream behind the house with the forest as a backdrop - it added to the peacefulness of the area. Whenever we took a trip for a few days, returning to the Gite was just like "coming home" and the owners, Simon and alison are lovely people who go out of their way to assist with information and their hospitality was fantastic. They even picked us up from Strasbourg train station and took us to collect our car, showed us the way to the supermarket, and so, so much more.
We found the location, 2.5km from Barr, set in the forest area, to be good - easy to walk the trails in the forest and just far enough from town to be lovely and quiet.
We would definitely recommend this Gite. -

Left on 07/02/2012 for a stay in June 2012
This house is really lovely with modern and comfortable fixtures and fittings. The bed is huge and very comfortable and the jacuzzi bath brilliant with a glass or two of cremant!! Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the kitchen was very well equipped. We missed some comfy chairs to sit in down by the stream and we thought the TV had English channels. It didn't, so we missed the Jubilee celebrations which we would have like to have watched whilst there. The area is fabulous- very beautiful villages, excellent wine tasting and good restaurants. We ate once just down the road at the Chateau d'Andlau and had a fabulous meal. We went the next night and it was not so good. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Barr and would recommend the house.

The house is beautiful! Bright and cheerful decor. Great location. Everything we needed was there. The kitchen is modern and well equipped. The large living-dining area is so comfortable with the fireplace, three large sofas, and chair and a half. The bathroom is luxury with the large jacuzzi. The house was immaculate. Just far enough out of town to be peaceful and quiet; close enough for quick access to restaurants and shops. The owner provides lots of information about local and regional points of interest. We loved the house so much that we have already booked another stay.

Left on 01/25/2012 for a stay in January 2012
This was a great gite with a fab log fire, and the added bonus of a sauna and jacuzzi bath. We loved listening to the steam (bit of a torrent in January!) upstairs in the morning. It was perfect for the two of us and our baby - and would also be ideal for a family of 4/5. Free Wifi was very useful too! Our only quibble was a few of the light bulbs in the sitting room lamps werent working and neither was the outside light or downstairs shower. However we had a very relaxing stay - it would be really lovely sitting outside next to the stream in the summer.

We had a lovely stay in November and again in December in Simon's house. We are a family of four and the house was perfect for us. All of the amenities are just as described. We enjoyed many nights in front of the fireplace, and took full advantage of the jacuzzi tub and sauna. We are outdoorsy types and loved being able to walk and run in the forest from our front door. The creek bubbling away behind the house lulled us to sleep at night. Simon and alisan were so helpful and accommodating to us; we felt well taken care of.

We really liked the furniture and had lovely evenings in front of the fire place. All the logs were for free!
The jaccuzi is great and so is the sauna.
Simon has the most fantatic armchair, everyone wanted to sit there.
The only snag: there could be a few more dishes especially plates.

Left on 03/04/2011 for a stay in August 2008

Left on 12/25/2010 for a stay in May 2010
We are living all the year long in a very crowded city in asia. We were so happy to spend a week in Simon's place in Barr: so quiet, so nice, so clean and well equipped with a fantastic kitchen, bathroom and a very large bed. We were just wake up in the morning by the song of the stream, the birds and the wind in the forest...like in a dream. May 2010 was exceptionally cold in France, but Simon's house has another very nice advantage: the chimney of the big cozy living room, with the firewood ready to be picked up just outside...We hope we will have time to come back soon in Simon's place in Barr !

We had a great time here in July for a week. The accommodation is fantastic with loads of space especially for two people. The house was very comfortable and after seeing the sights in the area it was a great place to relax for the evening. The location is perfect for the area. Great places to see all around without travelling great distances and the owner and friends were so helpful in telling us the places to go, restaurants to use and the best way to visit everywhere. We would recommend the gite to anyone who wants the "get away from it all feeling " with the ability to be a tourist in the alsace region at the same time.

Left on 10/04/2010 for a stay in October 2008
A week at this gite was our Ruby Wedding present from our family and it exceeded all expectations!
We were met and given a personal welcome and we were shown how everything worked. The big sitting/dining room has a comfortable open fire (firewood provided). Well-equipped kitchen. The luxurious bathrooom has a jacuzzi and there's also a large shower. The main bedroom has a very big and very comfortable bed and there's a flexible 2nd bedroom. The sauna is down in the basement. There are steps up to the front door from parking area; terrace, woods and stream behind and woods in front. Easy woodland and hill walks start a few metres from the gite leading up to the ancient Castle andlau at the top of the hill or across to the next village through the vineyards. Bigger walks, and easy skiing in winter, are not far away by car at Champ de Feu. The vineyards of alsace were spectacular in the autumn and there are easy walks through them. Quaint and pretty towns, including Barr and Mittelbergheim are within easy reach. Excellent local wine, wine-tasting and vineyard visits. Restaurant with a formidable wine-list just 200 metres from the gite. Other good restaurants in Barr. We relaxed and enjoyed the autumn days.

Left on 09/29/2010 for a stay in October 2009
We've stayed in a lot of French gites over the years--overall, this one is the best. While it lacks a spectacular view and rusticity, it makes up for those in location, comfort, and amenities. The excellent kitchen and bathroom facilities made the practicalities of daily life almost better than home, and the digital amenities (large screen LCD TV, wifi) were most appreciated. Furnishings were quite comfortable and practical, and we enjoyed the wood fireplace. One week really isn't enough time to appreciate all that the gite has to offer (next time we'll definitely try out the sauna). Alison was a lovely, helpful hostess when we had questions (Simon was traveling that week).
The location is also great--easy drive to the Strasbourg park and ride and the biggest auchan we've ever seen, easy access to the autoroute but also to the backroads through the vineyards, a decent Super U nearby, and lots of geocaches within a 15-20km radius. From the us, consider flying to Zurich and then driving up to alsace via Freiburg and the Schwarzwald.
We will definitely book the gite again for our next trip to alsace, our favorite part of France. Thanks to alison and Simon for helping make the last one so enjoyable and relaxing. -

Left on 09/24/2010 for a stay in October 2009
A quietly located property next to a stream in a mountain valley on the edge of Barr. Barr is a small wine village located on the alsatian wine route about twenty minutes from Strasbourg.
The hosts are English and were very helpful with language translations. They are knowledgeable of the region and helped arrange day trips to different areas. Many of which are not in any guidebook. The property is well located for touring the alsace region. There are excellent hiking trails with one leading to a medieval castle ruin that sits above the Gite.
The property is beautifully refurbished with a modern kitchen. The bathroom is equipped with a Jacuzzi bath along with a shower. The property has a washer and dryer, which is a nice convenience. Sauna is a welcome relief after a day of touring or hiking.
If you are looking for a rest day, sitting out on the terrace is a great place to unwind. There is a BBQ setup that is available for the guests.
One of the most memorable things is the babbling stream to listen to in the master bedroom at night. -

A nice, clean and cosy house in beautiful surroundings. The children liked the small river in the backyard, and its sound gave a quiet influence.
Very friendly housekeeper.
Well situated, not far from Strassbourg and other interesting places. Nice walks in the neighbourhood.
Pity the backyard is rather small and the road near the house is not nice for walking.
Overall: we had a very good holiday!Response from Simon Holt - 09/21/2010

Sadly I wasn't there when Jole was, I could have explained that clients' have full use of the garden that extends for 40 metres along the stream and is about 15 metes wide, plenty of room for ball games etc. Whilst the road can be busy during summer weekends, there are plenty of treks through the forests & hills that are well signed.

The gite is an excellent place to stay, the decor is charming and the furnishings are extremely comfortable. The photo does not do it justice! We woke to the sound of the lovely stream that runs behind the house and the woodland was a picture. We stayed during the October Wine Festival and after a chilly night in the village it was wonderful to return to the wood fire and relax. Simon's hospitality was amazing, nothing seemed too much trouble and I would recommend anyone to stay there. I have no doubt that we will return in the future.

This gite was a delight from the moment of arrival. Simon an alison could not have been more friendly or helpful from the moment of arrival to (so sad) departure day. They each know the area well and are pleased to make recommendations for both days out and local restaurants The accommodation was immaculate and tasteful, with every modern convenience and the best stocked kitchen we have ever seen.
This is a beautiful and peaceful part of France, with a very pristine, Germanic atmosphere, as you might expect. Touring by car is easy, with roads both quiet and easy to negotiate. In the north is Strasbourg, what a delightful and peaceful city, and in the south is Mulhouse, where a visit to the Schlumpf Motor Museum is an absolute must. We avoided La Montagne des Signes (Monkey Mountain) in the first week, expecting a monkey 'Zoo', but this is the most natural environment you could ever encounter outside 'the wild' and we even returned for a 2nd visit. There is far more to do than described here, go and find out.
Most enjoyed - the beautiful gite (the sauna is wonderful!)and the strawberry tatrs in the bakery in Barr.
Least enjoyed - Alsace is a very quiet part of France at the best times, be prepared for the slow place of life. -
