We arrived at the Station Masters House in good weather and when we went inside we found it to be very good indeed.
Starting with the kitchen , we found everything that we needed, and the same applied to the room next to the kitchen.
The lounge was very nice indeed but just a small point, not a critisism was that the backs of the three piece suit were too low and made or necks ache.
The Bedrooms and Bathroom were fine.
We would be pleased to visit again and hope to come next year possibly in May.
All the Lake District is wonderful and we have been coming up since 1952 so it is all very familiar to us.
Thank you for your review of your stay at Station Masters House.
We are pleased you found the property well-equipped for your needs and would return to the property next year.

We spent one week in the cottage during summer. The house is very pleasant and bright in all rooms, it is also very well located, just beside a wood and 10 minutes drive from Keswick where there is plenty to do.
What we didn't like was the fact that the a66 passes in front of the house, it was very calm inside the house but we couldn't open the windows or stay in the garden.

Rather isolated but very peaceful.

When we arrived we happened to notice the lounge window at the front was very slightly open, which we were quite amazed at, as the notice left for us specifically said that all windows should be shut when we vacated the property. Also a couple of the heaters were turned off when the notice specifically said that they should not be touched! Dust in the dining room was falling from the ceiling onto the furniture. There were quite a few cobwebs in one of the cupboards under the sink. Having said all this, we had a good holiday and we only spent the nights at the house. The bed was comfortable and we liked the heated towel rail in the bathroom.
Peace & Quiet!

Everything about this holiday was brilliant. The no hassle booking;gaining access to the property and the helpful staff at Cottage Holidays(Carlisle).
The accommodation is spacious and airy. All mod cons... even a dishwasher and a utility room with a washing machine & dryer and somewhere to clean those dirty boots after long walks on the hills.
The area is peaceful with only occasional traffic passing in the night. Wildlife visits the gardens as the sun goes down and in the early morning when the mists are lifting.
A thoroughly enjoyable and comfortable stay. Thank You Cottage Holidays for making it all possible. Read more

We initially chose the cottage because it stood alone. We didn't realise before booking it that it was beside the a66 but the double glazing did deaden the traffic noise. However, we noticed crazed broken glass on the drive behind the cottage, typical of a car window so we were worried throughout that our car would be broken into.
When we first entered the cottage, into a utility area, there was a distinct smell of damp and when we went through to the dining room, damp could be seen on the walls and it was evident the mould on the wallpaper had been painted over. In the kitchen there were many cobwebs above our heads and the door frames had heavy cobwebs in the corners. The kitchen floor was also very sticky. My first job was to vacuum the cobwebs away and my wife looked for a mop to clean the kitchen floor. She found a sponge mop that had not been used for a long time and was covered in cobwebs. However, this was cleaned so it could be used to wash the kitchen floor.
There is an exposed stone wall in the dining room and another in the main bedroom. Whilst they looked attractive, they have not been sealed and they shed masonry constantly. We had to move a bowl of fruit away from the dining room wall after it became covered in masonry dust overnight.
The heating is electric and there are instructions not to turn it off, which is OK when it's cold outside but we had some good weather and the heat was overwhelming. There is a log burner in the lounge but no wood was available had we wanted to use it on cold days.
Finally, you need to like mice as there were a number of mouse traps in the larder, though we never saw any.
In summary, there is plenty of room but the decor is tired and the cleanliness was poor. It could be so much better.
Thank you for your recent review on Station Masters Cottage.
May we first apologise for any problems you may have had during your stay at this property.
We have now fully investigated the issues you have raised in your review.
This 2 bedroom detached cottage was once the station master's own home, which has now been converted into a cosy holiday retreat after the closure of the railway line.
This property is located a short distance from the A66, between Bassenthwaite Lake and Sale Fell. This is the main route between the delightful market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth. There is also a small road which provides access to Routenbeck.
The caretaker of the property did not find any glass on the driveway when she arrived to clean. They also use their own cleaning products and equipment which would account for the unused cleaning materials inside the cottage.
The owner has discussed the open walls with a builder and has been advised that they should not be sealed, he has also confirmed that there is no damp inside the property.
The property provides several heating appliances throughout, some being pre-programmed and some available to add extra warmth and comfort as and when required. The majority of these are thermostatically controlled. Unfortunately wood is not advertised as being provided for this property. This can be obtained from any of the local petrol stations in the area.
Mice have never been reported in this property. However, due to the rural location of this cottage traps have been provided as a preventative measure.
The owners attend to the décor of the property every winter season. They try to maintain the character and nature of the building.
We do advise all guests to contact the office immediately on their arrival or at any time during their stay if they have any problems or issues with their property. Unfortunately, on this occasion, we did not become aware of these issues until we received the review above and are, therefore, unable to comment on the cleanliness issues raised.
We hope you enjoyed your stay in the Lake District and hope to welcome you back to one of our properties in the future.

Really enjoyed the week spent here back in September.
Nice clean cottage, bigger then we expected thought it was just the two of us.
Good location, not far to Cockermouth or Keswick, both have good shops and places to eat out.
It's not 5 star living but it is comfortable, clean and cosy with the fire going - You have to supply your own wood though, and take matches!

The agent was prompt with the key when we arrived to colect it. The property was spotlessly clean throughout with lovely large rooms. There were ample utensils in the kitchen, it was just like home from home. The location was excellent for touring the area and we visited cockermouth, whitehaven, workington and the very beautiful Kesick. Enjoyed everything about our stay and would definatly use this agent again and possibly stay at the cottage next time.

Everything was as the brochure said it would be.
We enjoyed the seclusion and although the property is near to a road, traffic was minimal and we hardly noticed.
There is a nature reserve directly opposite...well worth a visit.
The only downside was having to come home.

The property was very dated, musty and damp. It was situated on the corner of two noisy roads. It was not possible to watch the TV (much needed on long October evenings). The dishwasher was not maintained with salt and rinse aid. The oven temperature needed attention. Compared to other holiday cottages in The Lakes this one fell very short of expectations. Read more
As the name suggests, this 2 bedroom detached cottage was once the station master's own home, which has now been converted into a cosy holiday retreat after the closure of the railway line. This is obviously not a new build but a very attractive period property within the Lake District National Park.
The property provides several heating appliances throughout, some being pre-programmed and some available to add extra warmth and comfort as and when require. Unfortunately, as with all properties, if left unattended for any amount of time, can feel slightly cold when you first arrive.
The propery is located a short distance from the A66, between Bassenthwaite Lake and Sale Fell. This is the main route betwen the beautiful market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth, both only 6 miles from either end of the Lake. There is also a small minor road which provides access to Peel Wyke and Routenbeck.
We are sorry to hear that you could not watch television during your stay. Instructions are provided for the operation of this equipment. Had we received a call informing us that there was a problem, we would have arranged for a handyman to rectify this situation as soon as possible.
There is also a folder provided for guests which outlines various comments regarding the different appliances within the property.
The Dishwasher should be maintained with Rinse Aid. Salt is not required with this particular dishwasher as the property is located in a soft water area. Rinse Aid is provided in the property under the sink for use by the caretaker or guests when required.
The modern oven provided in this property is very easy to use. As stated previously, instructions and comments are provided for the guests to use. Temperatures correspond to those required by recipes.
We advise all guests to contact the office immediately if there are any issues/problems within their property. We will endeavour to rectify any issues as soon as possible which will enable guests to carry on and enjoy their holiday or short break.
Thank you once again for your review and we hope to see you at one of our properties again in the future,
