Sorel, CanadaEndroit paradisiaque
Left on 03/31/2013 for a stay in March 2013

Venice, Veneto, ItalyDirettamente sul mare! Fantastico!
Left on 03/16/2013 for a stay in March 2013

St. Moritz, SwitzerlandDisappointment
Left on 07/09/2012 for a stay in May 2012
Intrepid Traveler’s review could have been ours. We unfortunately had the exact same misfortune with this apartment as he had. We have been staying in May as well and – as the owner mentions in his reply – he told us as well that the apartment had not been rented before as he had been away for some time.
We choose the rental based on the reviews and the pictures. The photos show the apartment as it is, but they have been taken when it was clean – not what we experienced. We arrived to a completely dirty place. The lady checking us in ahead of time – what we appreciated as we arrived by private transfer and so could at least store our luggage for the time we went to have lunch - mentioned that the cleaning lady would come by later as there was laundry all over the terrace. So we thought that the cleaning lady would do what her name says, clean. What an error, at regular check-in time we arrived to the apartment in the same conditions, just the laundry had been removed. The floor was dirty – not only on the balcony, where the wind could have blown in sand, but also in the apartment itself and under the beds. We found even coins from former guests and socks and used adhesive bandage under the bed – together with the dust-balls (probably the same Intrepid Traveler has found again later in May). In addition, all over dead bees. The curtain in one of the bedrooms was torn down and laying on the floor. In the inner bathroom, the toilet was clogged when we arrived – and was again after it had been taken care of, as nobody had informed us that you could not flush the toilet paper. The other bathroom is on the terrace (utmost basic and cold water only, dropping down, not real pressure) and it was so dirty that we had to clean it before just being able to step in and try to use it. The dirt was all over it, floor, shower, sink, toilet – it may not have seen a cleaning lady in months. The water faucet in the sink – even after closing it real good – dropped and the floor was constantly completely under water. Who likes wet feet after using the toilet – so we had just the one toilet that clogged to use without having to clean the floor each time prior to use.
Even worse was the kitchen. After having looked at pots and pans we decided to soak everything over night to hopefully get them in an operable state and go get dinner at a restaurant instead. We arrived on a Sunday, when the fitness studio below was closed, and thus still planned to prepare other meals there. We did all our shopping. Next morning, when we started preparing our breakfast, there was a power cut which lasted a long time – so no way to prepare breakfast. But just after it finished, what a bad surprise: the fitness studio below turned their loudspeakers on full blast so that the whole house stared shaking. What a relaxing breakfast! With some short interruptions with not so loud and even nice music, this went on the whole day. We decided to go to the beach elsewhere, as the nice but tiny beach in front of the apartment was of no use with this horrendous beat. Therefore, no way to prepare your dinner and have a nice evening on the terrace – glasses and dishes are shaking on the table. This was one of the reasons we choose the apartments for, to be able to prepare a nice dinner and enjoy it on the terrace with the view of the sea. But also the greasy and sticky and broken dishes and glasses and plates and coffee machine and the rusty pans did not make us want to cook. Great disappointment! At least, we found nice and friendly restaurants in the village, but anyway, it was not what we have been looking for and what we paid for.
Then, once the fitness disco closed and got quiet and we thought gracefully “what a peace”, next door (probably the Barca Restaurant) started with music as loud as it has been before – just that it kept on until 2.00 am with a hard beat – impossible to sleep. The noise from the street was just an addition. So, you really must be an aficionado of hard beats to support the zumba from the fitness from 08.00 am to 09.00 pm and then the beat from the restaurant from 10.00 pm to 2.00 am!
As mentioned here before, the housekeeping was non-existent and the internet access was at the owners excursion business during opening hours only.
This could be such a nice place and it would not need a lot of investment to make it a beauty, but the apartment is completely neglected –or at least was the time we have been there. We have been to a lot of rental apartments all over the world, but never experieneced something like this.Response from Michel Ouellette - 07/19/2012

Hello Engadiner,
Yes I remember you and your brother, you are the couple in their sixties who stopped by at our apartment for a few days in May. Sorry I caught you at the end of your stay as I was on a short vacation. Unfortunately you were at the apartment just before entripid and the bee hive problem and had similar problems. Yet again you should have worn us directly when you encountered the little problems, we could have assisted you immediately and solve your mishaps instead of waiting at review time. You will be happy to know that all has been fixed and changed since then the cleaning staff also. You know what they say ‘’the mice dance while the cat is away’’! Seems you and I were partly victims.LOL. As for the Zumba fitness same thing there, only one hour of music per day from 7:15 to 8:15 PM and as you already know gym and Zumba is free to our guests of the apartment. They can join at any time! We also talked to the Mayor of Bayahibe which confirmed that changes have been made on the limited music at Barco Bar so this is solved also. You will also be happy to know that we have a very nice couple in their sixties living in the apartment for all of July and are enjoying every minute of it!! Zumba included.
Thanks for writing this review and hope you will come again to relive a better experience without disappointments. These reviews give a chance to future guests to know us a little more before they reserve. We are always listening to our guests and are always trying to make things better from visit to visit so our guests can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience with us!!!
Sincerely,
Michael

Montclair, Virginia, United StatesUnbelievably Great Experience in Bayahibe
Left on 06/24/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We just returned from 9 days in DR, with the last five in Michel and Brigitte's wonderful apartment in Bayahibe. After 4 days at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana, this place was the perfect opportunity to experience the real side of the country, meet locals, eat authentic food, swim on local beaches, and go on some of the most fantastic excursions possible.
We stayed with two adults and five children ages 11 to 16. The two king size beds were more comfortable than our 5-star resort and big enough to hold three of the kids in one comfortably. The two oldest kids rotated sleeping on the lounge furniture on the terrace right on the water or on the futon in the living room. While there is a bit of outside noise from motorcycles on the street in front of the house, it was not overbearing.
The apartment is perfectly located on the beach overlooking the bay with a breathtaking view of the sunset each night. It is situated on a local street among restaurants and right at the heart of the village. It is literally less than a two minute walk to at least six restaurants, the pharmacy, a hair salon, the grocery store, three money exchanges, and several dive shops and excursion opportunities, among other things. It is also right above a gym with Zumba classes, which you have full access to while staying in the apartment. The main local beach is only a seven minute walk and the locals there will provide you chairs, tables, food, drinks, even short term boat excursions for very reasonable prices. We took advantage of this and had a great day on our first day in Bayahibe.
One of the best part of the trip was getting to meet the locals. They are so friendly and willing to help you with anything you need. I do have to admit, being able to speak Spanish is a huge advantage in making that connection as my girlfriend is originally from DR and I can speak passable Spanish as well. We actually had a young lady from the restaurant down the street offer to cook goat for us in the apartment after my girlfriend mentioned it to her while we were at dinner. We took her up on this offer and it was a great meal.
Michel was a true professional from the beginning. He made us feel comfortable, answered all of my questions promptly (and I had a lot), and made himself available at all times for anything we may have needed. An added bonus of staying here, is you get discounted tours through Pro Excursions' tour shop, which Michel also owns. We did two of his tours (Pro Saona and Catilinita Island), which was the best day of our entire nine days, and another to do beginner scuba diving. The diving was awesome, but unfortunately four members of our group were not comfortable in the water with all the equipment. Michel provided a refund for those four members of our party which reinforced his commitment to ensuring we had a great time while staying at his property.
This property is not perfect inside, but it has everything you need and more to relax and enjoy the most authentic DR experience possible. If you are looking for perfect accommodations with around the clock maid service, you can book at the Dream La Romana up the road for ten times the price. But if you want the real deal with access to everything you could possibly want in a vacation in the Dominican Republic, then give this place a try. For the price, location, and experience, I can assure you you will not be disappointed! -

Our stay of four nights exceeded our expectations. The apartment is located in Bayahibe, close to many fine restaurants, a grocery store, and only about 90 minutes from the Santo Domingo airport.
We wanted to experience the Dominican Republic in a natural setting, NOT Stay aT a Resort. This place was perfect. Small village, safe environment, and a place where our young adult children could practice their Spanish.
The apartment was very clean. The view was beyond words. The owner was most helpful. Plenty of room. We were concerned about possible loud noise at night, but I guess we got lucky because the four nights we were there was actually quite quite, expect for the soothing sounds of the ocean waves.
We posted a video of the apartment along with some excursions at our website quickadventures.net. -

Left on 06/02/2012 for a stay in May 2012
Just the facts: We have traveled all over the world and in many third world countries such as India and africa, so we are pretty tolerant of tropical conditions, including insects. When we arrived, the apartment, especially the main bathroom smelled of insecticide because we were told they had a bee problem that had been taken care of. The last two nights of our stay, the bees were returning and kept falling into the bed, the first night one stinging one of our party. We sprayed with insect repellant, but the second night they came back worse. We told the owner as soon as it happened who suggested maybe it flew in through the open door. Apartment is above a gym which plays very, very loud zumba music at minimum from about 3 pm til 9 or 10 pm. It is also located on a main street which is full of loud motorcycle and car traffic from about 7:30 am til the evening. One of the reviews suggested one could sleep on the pullout in the living room to avoid the noise. The "pullout" is a futon. There were four of us. The beach at the apartment is postage stamp size and you can only reach it through the gym, or walk around the block. The beach lounges, heavy plastic types, must be carried out and back to the beach each day and not left overnight. We didn't even bother because of the gym noise and sat on the beach once, where we were repeatedly offered conch shells for $5 bucks by young men walking by, a couple of whom actually got nasty and cursed at us in Spanish, thinking we didn't understand, which we do. The site says housekeeping, but there wasn't any -- not even the trash was removed, we had to carry it out on our own to the trash container down the street. This is particularly unpleasant since you cannot flush any paper down the toilet, which we were not told about and which caused the toilet to stuff up twice. We had one beach towel, one bath towel and one hand towel apiece, which we had to wash and dry on our own. The two bathrooms are showers, with really poor water pressure, and only one has hot water. The pots for cooking were scratched and old teflon and one even was coated with dirty rusty water stains, stacked helter skelter in a dirty-looking under counter cabinet. The place is worn and had been cleaned with a "lick and a promise." Our feet got stained black from walking around barefoot on the floors. and when we checked under the beds before we left for misplaced shoes etc., discovered it was really dirty -- dust balls etc. The furniture on the outdoor living room was comfortable, but most of the cushions were soiled and covered or wrapped in beach shawls that women wear over their suits. The apartment is not air conditioned and has ceiling fans, and it did not really get hot indoors in mid-May, but it did not cool off until 1 pm or so. The bedding was clean and the beds comfortable. The internet access is not in the apartment but a block or two away when the owners' excursions shop is open. The outdoor living room (terrace) does have a lovely view of the Bayahibe Bay, but you can't see it unless you are standing up. The town of Bayahibe itself is quite charming, good food although pricey because it is a tourist hop off for the many booze cruises that leave to go to the National Park and islands nearby. The locals in Bayahibe are likewise really nice. You can get by with a very little tourist Spanish. The beach on the west side of Bayahibe just before you reach Dreams Resort and within short walking distance of the apartment is beautiful and clean. The itinerant vendors in the town and on the beach on the whole are very polite and take no for an answer. Some locals brought a table and beer and and really delicious cooked food down to the beach for us. They also arranged a private day long boat trip for two of us for $100. The owners of the apartment are very nice, it just is not a nice place -- not suitable for a vacation rental.

Hello Joanne sorry we had you on a bad dream vacation. Please know that we always go out of our way to make things perfect for everyone and this time failed. We would have preferred that you express your unsatisfaction with us and on the first day; it is certain that we would have offered you a full refund and help you relocate as this clearly did not fit your needs and expectations. Nobody wins in this case, you got a bad vacation, I get a bad review and lose prospects.
Here are more facts;
Coming back from our own vacation, (the apartment hadn’t been rented for a few weeks) we had an emergency to resolve at the apartment, only 24 hours before your arrival. A giant Bee hive inside the side roof of the apartment had gone out of control letting Bees come inside. The Bees were coming in from the main bathroom ceiling and had to smoke the room and open the ceiling to take out the complete hive. Having done this of course it let an odor the specialists told us would go within a few hours. So this left the apartment with an odor and the floors stained. We tried to make everything ready before your arrival to please you. We even thought of cancelling your reservation but 24 hours before your arrival it seemed a little harsh, so we took a chance. Next time I’ll know better and just cancel as a bad start just makes everything else seem worthless.
For all our future guests, we are and always will be at your service making sure you will have one of your best vacations here with us in a Dream beach front apartment in Bayahibe! We have plenty of good reviews to support us!!
We wish you great future vacations
Sincerely,
Brigitte & Michael

Terrace, BCAll the comforts of home plus!
Left on 03/11/2012 for a stay in January 2012
After one week in an all-Inclusive in Punta Cana, then another week in various hotels in Boca Chica and Santo Domingo, this beach-front apartment in Bayahibe was the icing on the cake to top our 3 week vacation in the DR.
The apartment is very comfortable, clean, and well maintained. It does have a lived-in feel with books on the book shelf, washing machine, tv, microwave, toaster, basically all the comforts of home. The 2 bedrooms both have nice king size beds with very nice linen, and the towels in the bathroom are good quality. There was a couple repairs that needed fixing due to the previous occupant and the owner, Michel was very prompt and accomodating to attend to them.
Nice double wood doors open up onto the most amazing terrace and beach front view one could hope for! Magnificent! Very nice outdoor furniture, beautiful hard wood dinging table and chairs, and coffee table, tropical plants, a bbq, CD player, and even candles make the atmosphere feel very luxurious. We had wine and candle light every night to watch the sun set. It made it a very special and romantic part of our holiday!
The owner supplied hand soap in the bathroom and toilet paper, as well as drinking water. There was some sugar already there, but we did have to purchase everything from salt and pepper to dish soap. If you are staying for any length of time i would recommend a trip into La Romano for a grocery shop as the grocery store in Bayahibe does not have a lot of selection and some things seemed a bit pricey.
I do have to comment about the noise. We weren`t bothered so much by the music of Barco Bar, or by the roosters and donkeys, as we were by the motorbikes that start up and down the street in the early hours of the morning. My partner is a fairly light sleeper so he was troubled by the noise a little more than I was. One option is to close the bedroom doors and sleep on the pullout in the living room, and meditate on the waves splashing onto the beach. The view is worth the noise! Just sayin`..
I would recommend this apartment and the town of Bayahibe as part of your vacation package to the DR. The all-Inclusive was good but there is nothing like getting out of the resort and living with the locals. I have to say that my last week in the DR, in Bayahibe was by far the best part of our trip. -

This apartment is a great place to stay, right on the beach, walking distance to everything, comfortable furniture, completely equipped kitchen. The owners, Micheal and Bridget, are so friendly and helpful, with great advice on everything you will need to make your stay memorable. We loved spending our days out and about seeing all that Bayahibe has to offer, and then coming "home" to have a glass of wine on the patio and watch the sunset over the ocean. I had coffee on the patio every morning, and watched as the tourists walked down the beach to the boats for their excursions. Staying here, we felt more like a local than a tourist. The only downside, is that there are only screens on the windows, and in Bayahibe there is always loud music playing until one or two in the morning, and then the roosters start crowing before sunrise. So, we didn't sleep much, even with the help of earplugs. But, I would stay here again in a hearbeat the next time we're in Bayahibe. The positives outweight the negatives, hands down!

My wife, 14 yr old daughter and I stayed here for a week in February. I must say that Michael was extremely helpful in planning our trip. He made arrangements for a taxi to meet me at the Santo Domingo airport late at night so I could follow it to the apartment in my rental car. It was recommended by Michael not to make the drive at night on such unfamiliar roads. Good thing I listened to him. We always get a rental so I can go food shopping and explore the area. The best major food shopping was about a 20 minute drive away in La Romana. We utlized the grill on the terrace a couple times and cooked in the kitchen a couple times. There are a few things about this vacation that are not perfect; If you do not speak spanish and you plan on staying in Bayahibe the whole time, good luck. To be honest, communicating with the locals, shopping for food, ordering at a restaurant were all diffucult due to the language barrier. The apartment itself is simple and could use some renovation or fixing up. As in other reviews, I do recommend earplugs for sleeping. The local partying at night and the roosters in the morning may be bothersome. At my house I always have the air conditioning on so I was nervous about this apartment not having it but I actually never felt the need for it with the steady breeze. The private beach is very small and shady. Enough about the negative stuff; As I said in the title, this place is worth double the price. You will be hard pressed to find an open terrace such as this one anywhere and so close to the water. It was great to hear the calm waves while going to sleep. I can't say enough about the terrace, it was awesome. I spent a couple days simply borrowing some snorkle gear from Michael downstairs and snorkling in the bay right our the back door. What a life, very relaxing. This apartment is without a doubt worth the stay. If a hotel was at this location you would be paying a lot more. This place was a great find.

I just returned from a 10 night stay in this wonderful apartment in this lovely village with its generous residents. I traveled with my boyfriend, his 17 year old son and my 11 year old Nephew. We were pretty frazzled upon arrival as we drove from Punta Cana (not something recommended for the faint of heart, at least until next year when the highway is complete). We were greeted by Michel taken to the apartment and one look at the gorgeous terrace and view and decompression began immediately. The apartment was clean, both king beds comfortable and though I was concerned with the lack of air conditioning it was not needed, the breeze at night is wonderful. If you are a light sleeper (as I am) ear plugs are recommended and sufficient to block out street noise (i.e. the fun parties that occur at the Barco Bar down the street). All 4 of us are divers and we used the recommended ScubaFun for all our dives (literally a 2 minute walk away). John and Ingrid are very accommodating and all the dive masters were very attentive. We did go on the Jungle excursion with Michel and the wonderful Rodger this is a must do (as long as you don't mind getting muddy). There are a number of excellent restaurants within walking distance El Cafecito de la Cubana, Captain Kidd and the best meal agreed upon by all Restaurante Mare Nostrum. Barco bar for a quick beer or just go to the middle of town (the convenience store turns into a bar and local happy hour ensues at 5pm).
Michel and Bridget are wonderful as are their family and staff, they are not intrusive but anything you need they will make sure you get and their apartment is the best view in Bayahibe (maybe the best view ever anywhere, definitely the best terrace) and if self-catering is your thing this is an unbeatable deal!

Everything in the reviews above is true and then some -- this is a great place to stay. I could live on the open air terrace, and was tempted to sleep there several nights. The breezes blow through the entire apartment all day and night, the view and sound of the ocean is wonderful, the sunsets are spectacular, and the hosts are great. They also run wonderful snorkeling and other trips, which we loved. This is not high end luxury -- it's homey, comfortable, and beautiful space. Cadbury the caramel puppy was another plus! Thanks Bridget,Michel and Jessica for a wonderful week!

The view is magnificant. We stayed in this apartment for 10 days and I loved every minute of it. It was my first time in the Dominican Republic and I'm so thankful we chose this apartment as opposed to an all-Inclusive. The owners were so personable and had answers for any questions we had (and we had many!). They helped us for everything...they told us where to exchange our money, where the closest colmada was, where the best restaurants were, how to get to the beaches...how much a taxi should cost...everything! I needed sugar for coffee one morning, I asked to borrow a little...and they gave me an entire bag! The apartment was very clean and the bed was super comfy! The apartment is located right on the water and the view is breathtaking. We never laid out in front of our place because of the boat traffic, but I can't imagine there is a more beautiful place to take in the sunrise or sunset. There are no windows, only screens, so it can be a little noisy at night, but the fresh air is such a great trade-off. Their entire staff was so friendly and really made us feel at home. I was nervous about not staying in an all-Inclusive, however,I felt extremely safe. The owners really seem to know everyone in town and it was so helpful. They called us a taxi whenever we needed it and took care of our ride to and from the airport..They provided us with the same driver, Martin...and he was the consumate professional. I cannot stress enough how wonderful the owners are. They made us feel at home. The apartment was secure and clean. The first morning you wake up and have coffee overlooking the bay, you will be addicted to the apartment at Pro-excursions. Thank you to this wonderful family for making my vacation so absolutely delightful. I cannot wait to see you beautiful people again...and that breath-taking sunset. Thank you!!

My husband and I spent a week at the Pro Excursions apartment in Bayahibe in early February. It was fantastic – perfect weather, perfect beach and perfect apartment. It was like a home away from home, plus we got to watch the sun set over the Caribbean every night. The apartment is beautiful; we lived on the outside terrace when we weren’t at the beach. If you are looking for an alternative to the oceanfront all-inclusive, this is it. We can still hear the ocean every night as we go to sleep. The owners, Brigitte and Michel, were great. Thanks for letting us stay in your paradise. We’ll be back.
