O F F S E A S O N we rent the house for retreats that you may have planned or we can suggest some ideas to get your group together for a fun get away. In September there is a great Irish Festival in Ship Bottom that has fantastic music, crafts, and heritage fun. The end of September and in October is the time of year the Monarch Butterflies are hitting the sky in force, passing through the Island to get home. It is a beautiful sight, and some years the dunes are filled with the Halloween Colored Wings of Flight. Bring your cameras for the butterfly flights, the sunrises and sunsets are to die for, and the moonrise is really grand after watching the sun do it's tricks.
October has the Chowderfest weekend. I will tell you a little about Chowder Fest if you have never been before.
All the restaurants compete for the best Red and White Chowder. They decorate their booths to reflect their business or style or personalities they want to get across, and cook all Sat. night into the Sun. morning preparing for the thousands that come to taste it and judge it. You get to vote on each soup, which is the best, and on their booths. It is amazing how the soups taste so different, and how some stand out to be so much better, you wonder what the others were thinking!! There are Bands, Beer Trucks, and the Bay Village Stores are hopping with their wares, and discounts. Local real estate agencies giving away bags, pens, magnet, chip clips etc., my kids enjoy gathering these free items. If you are brave try the clam fudge at the fudge shop! :) The Bakery's are clearing shelves too!
It is great fun for adults, my kids enjoy it, but small kids it is tough on due to being so small and strollers are not permitted in soup tent areas, back packed kids are a solid solution. There is a playground on the bayside of the tents to let the kiddies run loose on when they get the urge to run wild.
The day before tasting on Sat. local shops discount their stock, The Mod Hatter is a great place to pick up some funny, awesome, costumes for Halloween at a great price, and they sell hats that are a hoot (that show up at night Nardi's and some other local bars). The local bars that close for the season usually have great specials on drinks and food. The best bands are playing this weekend at the bars, and at the festival.
It is kind of the last hurrah on the Island, traffic lights may be off already, all the stores are pushing Holiday Seashore Type Gifts at great prices, and the weather is usually still in the mid 70's or so. We have been in the ocean until Nov. some years. There are no guards, but the ocean can be calm, warm and inviting for bathers and surfing. I am down the street from the Brighton Beach Surf Shop and they are still giving surf lessons during October. It also a nice time to rent bikes, which is at the Acme Surf and Skate at the end of the street. The Beach Theater next to the Acme is ten blocks and is still open I believe if you want to walk over to see a movie. And the Ice cream shops are also pushing out ice cream to clear out for the winter.
It is a nice time to get together with friends, and family to share in the tasting experience, grab some bargains, and enjoy the last signs of summer. It is also a great time to plan ahead and take your holiday pictures at the beach for something different. Plan your matching outfits, something goofy, family sunset poses, whatever fits your family style. The CVS has great sales on putting packages together for your holiday cards.
I extended weekend by a day, so on Sunday you can enjoy the day and not have to leave, check in Friday, and check out Monday.
I am also offering the long weekends on the following: Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Martin Luther King, Valentines, Spring Breaks, Easter, Memorial Day Weekend, and Labor Day. There are always great sales, top bands at the bars during most special weekends, and a great time for Families to rejuvenate, reconnect and relax.
Some of the Weekend Beach House Retreats ideas I can help set up are: Cooking Lessons, Scrapbooking, Spa, Massage, Yoga, Pilates, Fishing, Surf Lessons, Stain Glass Class, Mosaics. If you have a idea and need some help, let me know and I will look into it and help you put it together with you.
If you have a group that is looking for a large house to do your retreat let me know and we will try to accommodate your needs: Painters Workshops, Artist Workshops, Crafter Workshops, Book Clubs, Spiritual, Counseling Encounters, Youth Groups, Healing Workshops, Business Team Meetings, to name a few.
I also book for Destination Weddings in the months of September thru June.
Please inquire for more details for The Wed and Bed.

Webster, New YorkTerrific house in a wonderful location
Left on 08/19/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Our family (6 adults, 1 toddler and 2 infants) thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! There were two huge living rooms and both indoor and outdoor tables where a very large group could eat at the same time. Beds were very comfortable. The master bedroom had a nice view of the ocean. There was every kind of kitchen cooking, serving and eating implements that you could possibly want (so much so that we had to put our food on the counters as all the numerous cabinets were full). There were lots of books and DVDβs as well as a good selection of games and kidsβ toys. The owners were very helpful and accommodating as well as being a source of information, such as where to go for the best body surfing.
We were very close to the great beach and the enclosed outdoor shower with hot water and a place to put clean clothes made it very convenient to de-sand when we were done. Beach chairs, boogie boards and umbrellas were available (although we had trouble keeping the umbrellas upright on the beach). There was a large roof top deck with hot tub. You got a panoramic view of the ocean and bay and this was a nice place to watch the sunset. I was very sorry we had to leave!Response from Mary Ann C. Gutchigian - 09/13/2012

Besides the tables there are three other areas for groups from 8-10. Two inside with large screen Tv's and one topside with a hot tub. Highly reccommended.

It was a lovely house in an incredible location. Not in a tourist area; very quiet. Tom and Mary ann were very friendly and helpful. Just one thing to note is that you can't get to the fabulous roof-top deck from inside. Not a big deal for us but might be others.

Bergen County, NJAn amazing house
Left on 06/26/2011 for a stay in June 2011
Me and my friends stayed in this house for 3 days and we had a blast. The beach is really close to the house, much closer than the pictures make it seem, and the house itself was a great place to spend the evenings in. It was very comfortable and roomy, even with all the beds filled. Nothing topped the rooftop hot tub though, the view from up top is great and it made my weekend much more enjoyable. The owners are really cool, and I am definitely considering coming back again next year.

Left on 06/14/2011 for a stay in September 2010
This property has it all. Panoramic views from the roof deck or the street side balcony. Not beachfront, but just steps to the beach. The owners are friendly and accomodating, and no one knows the island better, so insiders advice on what to do/where to go is always available. When we stayed we felt like we were home, very comfortable. All the amenities are there, and since everything is virtually new, no problems.
A truly classic NJ beach vacation. -

I stayed at this house over labor day weekend w a big group of my girlfriends. The house is very large and more than accommodates sleeping for a big group - all 15 of us were very comfortable the whole weekend. The location of the house is amazing, you are within seconds from the beach. Also the house has a great roof deck, we enjoyed the sunset everyday from up top.
Mary ann and Tom were very helpful with getting us situated in the house upon arrival. Overall we had a great experience renting with them. The weekend was a total success and a great way to end the summer.

Arlington, VirginiaAbsolutely wonderful!
Left on 08/24/2010 for a stay in August 2010
From first contact through our arrival back home, Tom and Mary ann were most accommodating, willing to consider alternate arrival and departure times.
Our extended family vacation included my Oxygen dependent mother, and Mary ann escorted me to reserve a (free) beach wheel chair for her.
Everything in the description was true, but it just doesn't accurately reflect how amply the kitchen and entertainment areas are stocked.
The location is perfect; there are restaurants and shops to walk to, but you are not in the noisy commercial part of the island.
The lifeguarded beach is clean and just steps away; no problem getting the young and old back to the house for snacks or potty breaks.
Response from Mary Ann C. Gutchigian - 12/21/2010

Thanks so much Johanna for those kind words. You have a beautiful family. I am glad we were able to allow you some extra time for a easier entry and departure, and that you found everything you needed. It is so nice to meet new friends each year during the rental season. Have a safe winter, and we hope to see you next year. Sincerely, Mary Ann
