Description from the owner
Completely rebuilt with original rustic brick and cobble, these delightful cottages with their beamed ceilings combine local country craftsmanship with all modern facilities. Cleverly designed and furnished, they provide superb holiday homes on the edge of the old market town of Bedale (James Herriot's "Gateway to the Dales") with its wide main street and cobbled parking. The cottages are conveniently situated at the foot of Wensleydale, (only 12 miles from Leyburn) with Swaledale and the North Yorkshire Moors within easy reach.

Hänsel und Gretel
Offenbach, GermanyGreat hosts, comfy & spacious accommodation, and green gardens
Left on 05/30/2013 for a stay in May 2013
We really enjoyed staying with Jill & Jim, who gave us a warm and friendly welcome and helpful advice. What with their green fingers, the gardens, front and back, looked lovely.
We were accommodated in "The Croft", which is spacious, quite tastefully furnished, and comfortable, but the other cottages, which we were shown, too, look equally attractive.
The range of amenities left nothing to be desired, and the location just a short walk from the bus stop and the town centre made it easy for us to get about without a car.
If possible, we'd like to come again some time in the future. -

We spent the weekend in the Folly. Jim and Jill showed us around and when they left we looked at each other opened mouthed! We couldn't believe it, a most spacious, warm and charming cottage. We've stayed in many cottages around the UK but none to match this. The weather was extremely cold, below zero but you would never have known. Lovely kitchen, with an open living and dining area with skylight that gave it a light and airy feel. Beautiful! A most comfortable and cosy stay. We will return. We would highly recommend these cottages.

Very homely feel as soon as we walked in, it is a nice comfortable cottage very light and airy. Pleasent garden which Pip ( the dog) enjoyed.Shower was great and the kitchen was well equipped. The beds were all comfortable. And the place was nice and warm.
All in all a very enjoyable week. The weather was kind to us we only had one day of drizzel but as they say there is no bad weather only bad clothing. A very nice area well worth visiting. -

We Have stayed with the Cartmans For the Last 6 years and have stayed in both the Croft and the Folly. Both of which have recently been updated and redecorated to a very good standard, we have been more than happy our welcome is allways superb and the housekeeper Christine is outstanding any problems are solved there and then as soon as you mention or request something it is seen to immediately.Yes we Had some cobwebs on high ceiling and some dead insect in the bathroom as well but they where removed immediately on asking, these after all do come with the countryside.when i reqested a Television for the Bedroom I do not like soaps like the rest of the family Jim came and sorted out a portable within minutes I can Highly recommend staying here.

We have just returned from a lovely week at the Folly. Our first visit to these cottages. With my wife due to go into hospital shortly for a big operation this was the ideal place to stay. Approx. one mile from the a1 and half a mile from the market town of Bedale and with a convenient bus service outside the property it was ideal for us. The Folly reminded us of an old French Chateau with plenty of space with its own private little garden. The garden is like going on a magical mystery tour of seeing all the different plants and shrubs. A gardeners delight. The owners Jim and Jill gave us a nice warm welcome and were on hand at all time for any advice or local information. We left feeling totally refreshed and god willing we hope to be aqble to return.

We are a group of friends who have met at The Croft for the last 8 years to enjoy a week in the Dales. Jill and Jim give us a warm welcome and we are certain of a pleasant stay whatever the weather - the cottage being comfortable and well-heated.The informal garden is a great place to enjoy a meal or a drink as it offers privacy as well as the scent of roses.

Berkshire, UKVery welcoming and comfortable
Left on 06/11/2012 for a stay in June 2012
My husband and I and my parents-in-law recently stayed in The Croft, one of Courtyard Cottages lovely rental properties. The house is very spacious with a large, comfortable sitting room, spacious kitchen, 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms, making it ideal for a family or two couples. There is also a utility room (complete with washing machine) which we found very useful as we brought our dog with us. The house is very cosy and warm, with plenty of hot water for baths and showers. The decor and furnishings are country-house style: a mixture of antique and "shabby-chic".
A special mention should be made of the gardens - very pretty and beautifully kept. And our dog loved being able to go off-lead to play around the old nurseries at the back of the properties.
The owners, Jill and Jim, are very welcoming and friendly and on hand should you need anything. We had a problem with the DVD player which was sorted out very quickly and with no fuss.
However, I have a couple of very small quibbles which mean I can't give 5 stars to the property. The downstairs bathroom and the utility room floors appeared not to have been swept for a while as they were dusty and had a few dead insects in the corners. I realise that it is a rural property and these are to be expected but they had obviously been there for some time. Ditto a few cobwebs in the downstairs bedroom. Luckily I'm not squeamish about these things but other people may be. The bedlinen in the downstairs bedroom (bottom sheet and pillowcases) were rather old and worn, as were all the towels (rented at extra charge). They were all clean, but newer ones would have been much nicer.
Overall though, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly return. -

Yorkshire is lovely, as are the people - hence my return. However, there is where a favourable review has to stop. Upon pulling into the communal carpark there's an immediate sense of unease, it's so overgrown and looks like a junk yard to be frank. The courtyard garden is untamed. There's no way I could sit out there, you'd get eaten alive. It's also not gated so there's no way I could leave my dog unattended. The cottage itself is...*bleeep*. Rustic charm my eye. It's shabby (no chic, believe me!), the appliances are archaic, and it stinks. Out of the 2 bathrooms only one is useable for wheelies (my chair isn't that big), and there's no way you'd get a carer in there too. The TV is a flat screen, probably a 20" screen, with about 3 channels. The sofas are awful, the seats have collapsed so you're virtually on the floor. The decor is tired looking and bland.
I wanted a relaxing holiday with my family - this is not an enviroment condusive to relaxation! Off to the supermarket now to buy air fresheners.Response from Jill Cartman - 06/15/2012

Can't believe what I've just read.
The garden is lovely (see our Virtual Tour of the garden and cottages on our website www.courtyardcottages.net)
The '3 channel 20" TV' is actually a 5 channel plus freeview (further 8) 18" TV.
One extra wide doorway shower room can reasonably be expected to be be enough for one wheelchair user.
The seats have most certainly not collapsed (I hope)
Decor is really a matter of taste.
There was certainly no 'stink' when they went in. Could have the smell of local muck spreading. That's the countryside for you!
But although these guests chose not to use our comprehensive, well-labelled and easy-to-use recycling centre we were more than happy to deal with their bags of rubbish for them when they left.
Why did the dog-walking gentleman tell us that everything was "Fine"?

Personal and welcoming. The sort of genuine service you get only in Yorkshire. A beautifully designed and warm cottage, despite freezing temperatures outside! Ideally situated. Just off a1,but feels like heart of the countryside.Everything you need in Bedale, but easy access for travelling further afield, if you realy must!
Loved it!
