      Relaxing with family

Left on 12/09/2010 for a stay in November 2010

After living in Beijing for three years (and now we moving back to Sweden) I decided to have a last surprise for my husband and our three children (age 12, 10 and 7). So I rented The Hillside Haven over a weekend through The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu.
My family didn?t know anything about the trip, but they were so happy when we arrived and they thougt it was the coolest place that they had been to. And here in China we traveled a lot, so I think thats a good rewiew!
After we were checking-out we took a last trip on the Great Wall, also to say good-bye:( Hope to see you soon!

Incredible and unforgettable experience at Hillside Haven Mutia

Left on 11/05/2010 for a stay in October 2010

As expatriates arriving from hot and humid Jakarta, we were thrilled to arrive at Mutianyu with very sunny yet cool days, perfect to climb up the hills. Our check-in was really nice because since we arrived quite late at Beijing airport, we were offered to order food by phone from the car in order to be able to eat upon arrival at Hillside Haven. We loved the mix between modern and traditional architecture. We were so happy to sit by the fire in the evening and get somme good sleep in the extra comfy bedcovers. The staff at Schoolhouse was really nice and helpful, giving us very good tips to hike around the wall, we happened to actually hike on our own (with no other tourists) directly beneath the Great Wall. As we were a bit lost after one hike in one village near Mutianyu, we also tested the great hospitality of staff at Brickyard Inn, who showed us the way back. All in all, a stay to remember for everyone in our family, from our 6 years old girl who claimed she loved China, to our 10 years old boy who declared he did not see something as beautiful (the Great Wall) in his entire life!
Hope to come again some day...

      Haven is the word !

Left on 08/13/2010 for a stay in August 2010

I've been previously to the Reflection house of Mutianyu also from the Schoolhouse with two couples of friends. The house was great but we felt that for the price the service was not always up to our expectation.we were expecting for more : outdoor furniture including shades, a real kitchen ready to be used: the fridge was not big enough for our food not mentioning our drinks, there were not even one salad bowl.
Yet to be honnest, after 3 days there we only kept a good memory.

Now a month and a half later, when I managed to get 3 days off work, another stay at the schoolhouses houses seemed the perfect thing to do to escape the burning heat of Beijing.

We got this house without really choosing and it seemed we found the haven nested on the flank of a hill. Much smaller than the previous one, my wife and I found it much more "shufu" (comfortable) and fengshui. The outside living place, was cool in the heat of the summer, protected from the South by fruit trees, seated on a flat stone terrace.
The two bedrooms were real nests, the two restored aisle of a courtyard house.
Again, the only downhill of this marvellous house was the small fridge.

Yet, I would recommend this house to any of my friends...

By the way, it's also in Mutianyu and from the house or teh Garden you have a view on the Great Wall!

      Great Wall Expedition

Left on 08/11/2010 for a stay in August 2010

The Hillside Haven was an extremely great place to stay for a group of friends. The architecture is beautiful and it's proximity to the Great Wall is even better.

We checked into the Schoolhouse and were given our keys and a tour of the place. The staff was really nice and accommodating. It was a rainy morning but one of the ladies suggested that we take a hike up a trail to the Wall. This was my second time up to the Great Wall and the first time I took a gondola up...the hike wasn't easy but it was a great warm up for what was to come. The Great Wall can be a modest stroll through history or a rigorous walk. We chose to walk the entire Mutanyu section and it took 3 plus hours.

It was so worth it having a place to stay with great accommodations to come back to...after we washed up we hit the local market up for some snacks and of course Yan Jing. Then we went to Mr. Yang's for dinner. Awesome. The kitchen was open until 9pm and so we didn't feel as if we had to rush. We ended up staying there until 11pm and I really enjoyed the fried rice, dumping and sweet and sour chicken.

If you book through the Schoolhouse I recommend using the car service from Beijing. Very convenient and the guys are the best.

Beautiful and mystical area and home. It was wonderful to wake up and look out to the Great Wall. The experience of staying in Mutianyu and climbing the wall is not to be missed. We loved the sustainability factor that The Schoolhouse has focused on. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable stay. The kids said this was the best part of their China trip! (ages 6, 8 and 10 years old).

      A very special experience

Left on 07/09/2010 for a stay in June 2010

We loved the location and atmosphere of the home and village. The views to the Great Wal were magical and the surrounding forests and orchards tranquil. Villagers were welcoming. The house unfortunately was very hard to cool down in the summer heat with all the glass windows. Outdoors there should have been an umbrella to offer shade. Proximity to western food products was also limited and thus difficult to make use of the kitchen. Eating out options were also limited in the village. The Schoolhouse should provide the option of stocking the kitchen with some food items especially for tourists with litle knowledge of China. The schoolhouse staff were very friendly and helpful except checkin was not very welcoming and helpful and the house was stuffy and hot. It should have been aired and cooled down for our arrival..We only stayed 1 night becuase it was extremely expensive. We would have considered more nights if the rate was half! We think it was overpriced. The restuarant at the schoolhouse was very special - live jazz at the foot of the Great Wall with fine food and wine was the highlight. The head chef was extremely courteous and paid special attention to my children's needs. I would recommend this place to friends who are well off.

      Blissful

Left on 06/27/2010 for a stay in June 2010

We all really enjoyed our stay at Hillside Haven: I was already a satisfied customer having stayed at Grandma's Place the year before. We were warmly welcomed by the Schoolhouse staff, who still made us feel important, even though we were only staying for one night. Hillside Haven was clean and immaculately presented. It is such a treat to get out of the noise and bustle of Beijing and arrive in such a charming village with friendly neighbours, great views of the Wall, and have the luxury of 'our home' to retire to, albeit for one night. We particularly appreciated the comfortable and spacious kang beds (big enough for two friends to share), the fabulous, spotless bathroom with the walk in shower, and the ability to be able to cook for ourselves and sit out in our own little garden and dine while looking out to the hills and the Great Wall. We stayed on June 21st, the night of the solstice, and it was wonderful to sit and watch the sun go down behind the Wall on the longest night of the year. Although we didn't dine at the School House restaurant, I was glad to be able to buy a gin and tonic at 6.30pm after a long day hot day walking on the Wall, and Lauren happily accommodated my sister's allergy requirements at breakfast the next morning, which I had forgotten to notify the staff of in advance. We had a lovely stay, which felt much longer than the 24 hours it actually lasted. I will go back to the School House accommodation as many times as I can while I'm still in China.

The Intersection of Traditional Living with Moden Comfort

Left on 03/30/2010 for a stay in March 2010

My family recently spent one night at the Hillside Haven while visiting the Great Wall in Mutianyu. The home itself is absolutely beautiful... the highlights being (1) the fireplace - a great way to start and end the day in the winter, and (2) the beds, which were housed in old-style dwellings, but with thick, luxurious mattresses. There's nothing like looking up to a mud and tile ceiling while snuggling into a warm bed. Surreal.

The home feels at once modern and traditional - significant portions of the home utilize decades old buildings and materials. Large glass 'walls' showcase the tremendous views.

The icing of the experience is the staff at the Schoolhouse, who manage the property. They are friendly, personal and accommodating. The Schoolhouse runs a small dining operation that delivered three of the best meals we had over the course of our three-month stay in China.

Hillside Haven and the Schoolhouse were a very comfortable 'base' for exploring the Great Wall in Mutianyu. If you plan to visit this portion of the Wall it's absolutely worth it to spend the night here to complete your experience.

A week's retreat by the Great Wall

Left on 01/29/2010 for a stay in December 2009

My husband and I wanted to get away but have the comforts of a home. This was even better, since in addition to our own kitchen we had the option of eating at the resturant. And the schoolhouse restaurant food was very tasty.
The windows are such that the space feels so open. Allowing us to enjoy mountain views (including of the Great Wall) with our morning coffees.
The location is great for hiking. And after a hike, we would come home and relax by the fireplace.

      A wonderful stay.

Climbing on an almost deserted section of The Great Wall, lying on warms floors with a fire near by while looking up at the stars and drinking delicious Chinese red wine, and one of the most delicious Thanksgiving meals ever. A great stay and an experience I highly recommend to anyone visiting Beijing.

A peaceful, tranquil getaway at the Great Wall

Left on 10/19/2009 for a stay in October 2009

We stayed two nights in the Hillside Haven in Mutianyu and couldn't have been
more pleased with the visit. The house is lovely, airy, and open, with a quirky
modern European architecture. The patio is gorgeous, I only wish we'd had
more time to enjoy it, but we spent many of our hours walking on the Great
Wall which is very nearby. We ate our meals at the Schoolhouse and were
pleased with the service and food, but if I were going again I might do some
cooking in the house which is very nicely equipped. I traveled with 3 children
(ages 11, 9, and 5), who loved exploring the hiking trails right outside our
door. We were able to visit a couple other of the Schoolhouse rental properties
and they were all beautiful. They are not, however, equal distance from the
restaurant and Great Wall, so it's worth consulting the map before you book.
Hillside Haven is very well located. The town is charming and clean, and the
local Chinese people are friendly. The air, in particular, is remarkably fresh. It
      was a fantastic weekend.

Hillside haven is a delight to stay in, just a short walk from The School House where familiar or more adventurous food is available. The design is a clever blend of modern convenience and rustic charm, the right amount of comfort has been added without destroying the appeal of the original architecture. "Great" views of the wall from the second floor. Many of the staff speak excellent English. I really think it is a unique experience in China.

the perfect birthday location for kids and adults

Left on 07/27/2009 for a stay in July 2009

we had a great time there celebrating our daughter's 3rd birthday. the house is a dream - with direct view to the wall. it has a beautiful setting next to the rocks and trees, overlooking the village. in the courtyard is a bbq and it's a great opportunity for the city people to get out and relax in a completely different rural but comfortable environment. the house offers really everything that is needed!
this part of the wall (mutianyu) is super for kids and those adults who are not so keen on physical excercises: there is this cable car to go up and a looooong slope to come down. we all loved it and will definitely come back!

      a little haven outside beijing

Left on 07/17/2009 for a stay in May 2009

My husband Geoffrey and I, together with our good friends, had a brief yet fabulous time at the Hillside Haven in Mutianyu a few months ago. We weren't sure what to expect, especially walking down the little dirt alleyway towards the house, but once we got there, we found a wonderfully modern, open and quiet courtyard with precious views of the Wall and local village below. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and the bedrooms were charming. We also very much enjoyed the little outdoor area where we spent a great evening together savoring home-cooked Thai food (we brought our own food and cooked up a storm that night) and wine. Just footsteps from the courtyard, we found a pathway that led us to a great hike near the wall. We'd love to go back again one day - it's the perfect place to go with a few friends to unwind and just chill.

More than a Haven...a Hillside for an Experience

Left on 07/09/2009 for a stay in October 2008

We have stayed at several of the Schoolhouse Rental Homes. Each, including Hillside Haven are dramatic Villas with amazing modern and up-to-date amenities. These include wet bar, heated floors and bed in the cold...AC in the heat! We have even found free WiFi in each one! They are individually designed and finished impeccably, with absolutely stunning and award-winning wood and stone architecture, all based on the original designs of the home and the surroundings. They have incredible Privacy while being centered in an historical Village with wonderful views in all directions. In Hillside, the roof-tops below are peaceful, the Great Wall above affords a simple walk to grandeur. We have stayed at Villas all across the globe, seeking such qualities, but only these have we returned to again and again.
