Description from the owner
A View from the Top- Mumanyu was created by a family who wanted a very private retreat at the Great Wall, a place for their far-flung clan to gather that would be close to nature and also engaged with the village community around it. From the huge slab of native slate guarding the entry to the skylit interiors to the Great Room that seems to float in the tree tops Mumanyu offers a true getaway.

Nanjing, ChinaWonderful house, but some things to improve
Left on 12/07/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This property has 5-star potential, but is lacking on a few fronts. First, the good points:
- the property is beautiful, even stunning
- it is truly quiet and you are in the the village
- the house is spacious and great for multiple families getting together
- the food at the nearby Brickyard is quite good
Some points that can be improved to become 5-star:
- we had many numerous harmless bugs in our house...it was the season for these bugs, but there must be a way to prevent them.
- the service at the Brickyard was spotty - sometimes not so prompt or accurate - although the food we got was alway yummy.
- it would be wonderful to be able to order food up to the house - as it is a bit of a walk from restaurant to house - and after a long day of hiking, it would be nice not to hike to the restaurant. -

HobartRelaxing with friends
Left on 12/27/2011 for a stay in December 2011
This was my second stay at Mumanyu and again we had a great time. Four families stayed with children ranging from 2 months to 7 years. Altogether there were 6 adults and 5 children (3 under 3 years). There was plenty of space and the house was cosy and warm for the whole stay.
The outdoor space was great for the older children as we could see them in the lounge room and kitchen. The house itself is a beautiful design with a nice cosy feeling. Every room had it's own bathroom with floor heating. The beds were comfortable and the whole house was clean and well presented. The many windows allowed us to admire the view without going into the cold frosty air. A very quiet part of a clean quaint village.
Some of us went for a walk around the surrounding villages and came home with some fresh fish from a neighboring fish farm. The cooking facilities were adequate with enough cooking utensils and crockery to serve us all. The BBQ was a perfect accompaniment to the kitchen. Although we cooked most of our food, we enjoyed going to the School House and The Brickyard for breakfast.
The service was excellent and friendly. If we had a problem with anything in the house the quickly sent someone to have a look.
Overall, we had a great relaxing weekend away. I recommend to stay at least 2 nights to fully appreciate the home and the village surrounding it.

Taipei, TaiwanPerfect get away house near Beijing
Left on 01/03/2011 for a stay in January 2011
We, a big group of good friends (8 people), stayed at this house for 2 nights long weekend. Perfect for a relaxing get away trip. Easily reachable from Beijing and provide a very local / small village feeling. No touristic feeling whatsoever. Main activities: relaxing, hiking, Great Wall hiking, cooking, chatting by fireplace.
The house is very well maintained and built. It provides very large space for groups and certain level of privacy in among the village houses. Very comfortable in all aspects.
We cooked extensively in the house, overall kitchen and dining area are very nice. Yet, kitchen is slightly small if you are preparing for 10+ people.
Bedrooms are huge with separate shower attached. Beds are very comfortable.
The hot water supply is a bit slow, you need to take shower in turn with a bit gap in between. 1 set of the loo / shower does not have under floor heating and is practically un-usable when outdoor is minus 10 degree.
Fireplace in the living room is a centre point. Having able to burn actual wood fireplace is great in such cold winter. Also appreciate of not having TV in the living room. Living room should be equipped with some stereo equipment for music.
Views from the house is fabulous. With short walk to reach local well-preserved village while short drive to the Great Wall. Also several hiking routes around. A real treat from the nature.
Service is great as a rental house. No hotelish feeling and staff are all very friendly and nice. Good daily cleaning despite we cooked a lot everyday.
This is a perfect get away house for large groups of families or friends. The price is on a bit high line; yet, the way it is built and run is almost non-exist in China. Absolutely recommend.Response from Schoolhouse Homes - 01/03/2011
Owner
Dear Mr. Tai, Thank you very much for your detailed and frank review. We will make sure the defective heating in one of the bathroom floors is repaired. Re stereo, we are working on providing stereo docking stations in all the Homes for our 2011 season as well as some other upgrades in amenities and service model. Wishing you the very best in 2011. Kind regards, Jim Spear, Partner, The Schoolhouse 1/4/11

Beijing - ChinaGreat location, very pleasant house
Left on 11/02/2010 for a stay in October 2010
We spent a very good time in Mumanyu.
The house is fantastic and the village is really pleasant (much more peaceful than Mutianyu, actually).
The rental price is high, but it's close to be justified.
Only few details could be improved :
- check-in at 15:00 is too late,
- really big quantity of bugs in house that could disgust some people (my wife !). I guess it's depending on the season.
- impossible to close all windows in the bedrooms with curtains (wake up quite early for everybody !)
- breakfast should be possible in Brickyard hotel instead of Schoolhouse (Brickyard Hotel is in the same village, but Schoolhouse is in Mutianyu))

BeijingWeekend at the wall
Left on 10/17/2010 for a stay in September 2010
Our group, four families were having a birthday celebration weekend away from Beijing. Mumanyu was an ideal house for us enough space to be together but also have privacy. The setting is amazing and that was despite being a rainy weekend. Views of the wall from the houses and also from the schoohouse restaurant where we dined one night are breathtaking. We enjoyed the atmosphere and restbite from the city, it was so relaxing. Our stay was made even better by the service of the staff. Check in was a breeze and even when once family had a catalogue of problems nothing was too much trouble after normal hours, one family was lost en route in the dark and then the key broke in the door. It was sorted immediately with prompt and friendly service. As we were staying in one of the more remote houses the complimentary pick up service was excellent and Breakfast was also great. Our dinner also at the schoolhouse was fantastic food delicious for adults and kids alike and again the service we received was outstanding. I have already recommended these houses and facilities to a number of friends and am sure that we will stay again before we leave Beijing.

This spacious and very comfortable house is the perfect retreat for a big family or a group of friends seeking to enjoy a nice week-end barbecuing outside, lying in the grass and having a sun bath. In case of rain, the house itself provides all you need to entertain yourself and your friends in a cosy atmosphere. What Beijing can't offer you, ie fresh breeze and nature, Mutianyu has it all!

Vancouver, British Columbia, CanadaAn incredibly relaxing experience at Mumanyu.
Left on 08/11/2010 for a stay in August 2010
Five of us rented the Mumanyu house for one night and the stay was idyllic for all. The house was beautiful, well-furnished and clean, and we took all of our meals at The Schoolhouse, where we enjoyed the wonderful food and warm hospitality. A visit to Beijing just wouldn't be complete without at least one night "on the Great Wall at Mutianyu".

San Diego, CaliforniaGreat locale for a birthday party
Left on 06/11/2010 for a stay in May 2010
Mumanyu is a short driving distance from The Schoolhouse, but we planned to cook our own meals so not being within walking distance to The Schoolhouse wasn't a problem. Our oldest daughter turned 16, and when asked what she wanted to do for her birthday she said she wanted to take some friends and stay in a house by the Great Wall.
The house itself is lovely and easily accommodated 2 adults, 6 teenagers, and 2 'tweens. It is easily set up for 2 families with 2 mstr suites, one bunk room which sleeps 5, and a large kang bed. The living room is open and inviting and the bathrooms are modern and spacious. The kitchen is small but I had to remember that it is a vacation home, and as such is smaller and not as well-equipped as I would have liked it to have been. We had 12 for dinner and were short of cutlery, glasses and plates so in order to serve dessert I had to wash everything. Cookware too is at a minimum however we loved the new grill! That was a breeze to use for dinner and I should have brought sausages to barbeque for breakfast! Other than the kitchen, the house was a real delight and we loved our stay there! The design is great in that the fireplace is open to both the dining area and the living room.
The reason I gave it 3 stars for value is that it is rather expensive to stay there however I know we'll do it again as we love The Schoolhouse and the people who manage it. It's definitely a splurge but everyone deserves one now and then. We liked the location a lot but the constant radio announcements on the village loud speaker got to be a bit annoying. Overall though, we had a great time, loved the house and love The Schoolhouse group! Would recommend it to families seeking a break from the usual in Beijing. -
Life in Harmony
BeijingBest Weekend Getaway Spot in Beijing
Left on 05/31/2010 for a stay in May 2010
A perfect combination of the old farm house and the new and modern extension, the house is in total harmony with the surrounding village. It's a perfect way to get away from the city and spend a weekend in an authentic Chinese village setting but with all the modern comfort. The view of the Great Wall from the sitting room was an extra bonus.
The four-bedroom house could easily sleep up to 12 people as some of the rooms are huge and the owner has put in extra beds. The kids loved the old farm room with the original "kang" bed.
The staff at the Schoolhouse are very sincere and helpful. Checking in was easy and swift with help to guide us to this house at the next village. The complimentary continental breakfast was just the way it should be - simple but fulfilling. If I could be just a bit picky...would be nice for the breakfast to come with a cup of cappucino or espresso also... -

BeijingPerfect place to spend a week-end with friends or family
Left on 03/04/2010 for a stay in January 2010
Each of the houses has its own charm and taste, we have
rented different houses several times, and each time we
have been greatly satisfied with almost everything. The
location is perfect, from the village, we can do short walk
around the village, through the hill to another village or
to climb up the wall... We also tried making our own BBQ in
the garden, with the beautiful panorama view on the
mountains and the great wall.... That's something to
remember!
Heating works well except the room with a Kang in Mumanyu.
And the fireplace works perfectly adding a lot of warm
feeling if you are staying there in the winter.
The services are perfect, staff are all friendly and very
helpful. We keep in going back every 2/3 months and
recommended all our friends to go... So no need to tell how
happy we are with this place! -

BeijingAn excellent spot for a quiet weekend away.
Left on 11/20/2009 for a stay in November 2009
Mumanyu was a great base for a relaxed weekend out of the city. In a quiet valley away from the tourists but with the Great Wall just up the road, it is in a perfect spot. Large comfortable bedrooms and sitting room (which would benefit from more easy chairs since the house sleeps a lot of people) and a well appointed kitchen with a good supply of crockery, cutlery and glasses. We chose to cater for ourselves but the School House and associated restaurants have good local food if self catering is not on your agenda. Heating and hot water supply in the house were excellent. Arrangements were easy and staff very helpful.

Mom from Chicago
Chicago, ILBeautiful Home, out of the way location
Left on 08/13/2009 for a stay in August 2009
Our family of 7 (including 4 children, ages 7 to 16) really enjoyed our stay at Mumanyu. The home is really spacious, and could easily accomodate 10 or more (with 4 full baths). Biggest positives:
- Home has very interesting architecture. Has windows everywhere, is sandwiched in between other homes, yet it very private. The windows and courtyard wall are very strategically placed, so you don't see the other homes. Nicely landscaped.
- Village is cute. Our children walked down the street to the village center, and the locals tried to talk to them and were very friendly/welcoming. After several days in Beijing, the rural/small town feel was great.
Challenges:
- Have to walk up an unpaved, uneven driveway
- Living room furniture could be better
- Is pretty remote - know what you're in for on this front.
