What Past Guests Are Saying
We stayed in the Reflections House at the School House. It was so beautiful! It has with lots of windows, a fire place, heated floors and an amazing view of the great wall from the very comfy couch. The whole experience made us feel as though we stayed more than one night. Very relaxing and well worth the money.
Beijing Couple 2010
The Schoolhouse: Reflections
I have to stay, the six of us had a wonderful time in Reflections! My guests (4 of them) who were visiting Beijing for the first time spoke of our time at Mutianyu as the highlight of their trip.
We loved the hiking trails provided by the office staff and explored many trails leading up to the Great Wall.
My husband and I have stayed at the Brickyard Inn during this past summer but we truly had a great time at The Schoolhouse this fall.
In addition, the staff was so accommodating to cater to my sister who has a gluten allergy. The food was wonderful and it was great to have the chef come visit our table prior to ordering. The steak and pumpkin rissoto were fabulous dishes. My husband said it was the best steak he's had in China.
Thank you again for your hospitality and wonderful service. I know we will recommend The Schoolhouse to our other visitors and friends in China!
Wonderful Spaces - In and Out, Up and Down
This is the third time we stayed in Schoolhouse Homes. Having previously stayed in Heart's Repose and the Brick Yard, again we feel our experience has been enriched at Reflections.
The three bedrooms fit our needs perfectly - my parents in their 60s, my wife and I, and our 7-year-old nephew - he was delighted to have his own bedroom and bathroom!
The house is only steps away from the Schoolhouse restaurant garden. From the outside, it blends in with surrounding village houses at Mutianyu. Once inside, we are amazed by the intricate interior and exterior spaces, with multiple height levels adjusted to the natural topography, and glimpses of the Great Wall from different locations. Our nephew kept discovering new passages running up and down (4 different stairs connecting the lower and upper levels, including a sprial stair going all the way up to a loft under a skylight!), and played hide-and-seek with my wife... The cascading pool in the middle of the courtyard is refreshing in these hot summer days, as well as adding the element of sound. The bathrooms are also special - spacious and gets plenty of light. We love the openness of the master bathroom and the linear arrangement of 5 individual spaces for the other bathroom: dressing table, closet, lavatory, toilet and sink. (Yeah I know, I am an architect and pay attention to this kind of details...)
We will definately come back, while at the same time tempted by the other houses at Schoolhouse Homes!
Great spot where we will definately go again
We were 5 friends sharing a house and were absolutely satisfied about the quality and service of the venue. Will definately go agin!
Altered time and space
We received, as usual, warm welcome from the staff and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere at the Schoolhouse before we accessed the house. Very close nearby (which is very convenient if you wish to dine out or even order from the great food at the restaurant) the house is all edges and stones when you first come in but this changes as you go up the spiral stairs : wide area on the first floor, divided into living space (with open fireplace) and huge kitchen on the other side. The views of outside village life are great but nothing compared as when you go to the top of the house, to this famous crow's nest which gives you a feeling that you could touch the sky...
The bedrooms are independent (each one offers a private bathroom) yet easily connected. Special mention to the master's bedroom with a private living space for evening chill-outs.
What seemed already beautiful at night proved magnificient in the sunshine : the next day was very sunny and we had a great time together, both inside and outside the house. With both doors to the yard opened, we all had a feeling of calm and peace in this very private space. One very easily forgets the tensions of city life when resting in such a place.
Unfortunately, this also leads you to forget about the wall. Although only a short walk away, it is not as omnipresent as in other amenities around the village, because the house reflects on itself without really opening the views to the outside.
Warning concerning the stairs : we were traveling with 3 young children and had to keep an eye on them constantly because the house is centered around this pitlike space. This is of course the duty of any parent but constant watch over kids can get tiring... We would have appreciated to find information (maybe a rating system on this issue, from "child-friendly" to "absolutely dangerous !" ? ;-) on the booking website.
Experience the alternative at the Great Wall of China
Good alternative for visitors to experience historic sites in Ch
The service from the time we arrive to departure was excellent. It is not 5 star service, but the kind just right for the occasion. The 'Reflection' is a summer house, by that I mean it is not the right abode in winter. The single problem is it's poor insulation from the bitter winter cold. Unfortunately, this one trivial problem has prevented us from enjoying to the fullest an otherwise most memorable stay. The fireplace while provided great atmosphere, did little to warm the living area; since more than 90% of the heat went up the chimney. However, I still think the house is well layout for a summer stay, particularly when one can enjoy the outdoor area. The bedroom is great and remain warm enough with curtain drawn. We also enjoyed the Christmas Eve dinner party. We will definitely come back for more stays, in the right home for the right season.
Reflections – a visit
We emerged from the dusty, gray skies in to the blue, fresh, clean air of Mutianyu on a warm Saturday afternoon. After spending the last week trudging around in the oppressive heat of downtown Beijing, we looked forward to spending some time in the quiet, peaceful surroundings of The Schoolhouse.
Near The Schoolhouse, Reflections is situated in such a way that it gives the visitor sweeping views of the village and surrounding hillside yet prevents those on the outside from seeing in. We were led up a gravel path to a beautiful stone, three story house. Once inside we were shown the two guest bedrooms, each equipped with full, private bathrooms. The spiral staircase on the right led us up into the spacious living room, which flowed in to the equally generous professional kitchen. Instead of stone walls, as on the first floor, the walls were almost entirely glass, giving one the feel of being outside in a private sanctuary. The spiral stairs continued up, on to a third floor 'crow's nest' fitted with a wide resting sofa and large, comfy throw pillows allowing one the chance to sit back and soak up the views of the Great Wall in front, the mountains on either side or the beautiful sky overhead. Skylights were incorporated throughout the exposed wooden beam ceiling throwing streaks of sunlight across the living room and kitchen.
Walking out of the kitchen we were shown the gorgeous infinity dipping pool. The stone walkway led us to the centerpiece of the house, the original courtyard home which Reflections was built around. Remade into the master bedroom, we were greeted with the clean smell of wood and stone. Original wooden beams were exposed overhead, while cool gray stones meet our feet.
The natural calm of Reflections, provided us the opportunity to recharge after weeks of hectic work schedules and numerous to-do lists. The ease, comfort and tranquility will keep us coming back again and again.
