Description from the owner
Rustic Retreat at the Great Wall- Imagine lounging on the expansive kang bed watching the light play on the Great Wall as sun streams through the stained glass panels that give a joyous sparkle to Stone Forest. What was once an abandoned three room hut with grass growing from broken roof tiles has been transformed into a rustic retreat with a romantic outdoor shower in a private courtyard sheltered by a honeysuckle arbor. Exposed stone and brick walls, huge beams, custom paneling, and granite hearth. The irregular slate slabs of the floor came from the weathered roof of another hut way up in the mountains. The raised outdoor terrace offers 36...Read more

What Past Guests Are Saying
Owen Sound, Ontario
Beautiful surroundings, excellent lodging, and friendly staff.
Stone Forest is an absolutely gorgeous home. Comfortably slept 3 couples, although one couple had to sleep on the kang (actually a treat - heated bed surrounded by windows which give onto the hills and the Great Wall).
I would strongly recommend this as a place to stay if you want to spend a night near the Wall. Although it's somewhat on the pricey side, if you're a larger group, it turns out to be quite affordable.
comfortable village home in a nice setting by the Great Wall
My parents and I had a wonderful stay in the village home called 'stone forest' near the Great Wall at Mutianyu. We love the big sitting 'kang' area and the well landscaped yard from which we could see the Great Wall on the ridge of the hill. The villagers were very friendly and we took some nice walks arouns the village. There was a nice resteraunt next to our rental home and the food was delicious. It was a unique experience.
Stone Forest, a lovely sat, July 3 to 4
Wonderful location, beautiful home, comfy beds, tasteful design, nice garden and great, friendly staff. Our only suggestion would be one more air con unit in main room: it was difficult to cool this room to a comfortable temperature. Also, there seems to be a minor wasp/hornet problem inside home, so we were happy to find the fly swatter!
4 great nights at The Wall
We had 4 nights over Easter at Stone Forest with our 3 children aged 7, 5 and
2 and what a fantastic experience it was. The quality and simplicity of the
house coupled with the amazing villagers made for memorable holiday.
We ventured to the great wall a few times, ate at the School House and the
fantastic restaurant right next to the house run by the local village.
The best part was being able to spend time walking in and around the village.
Make sure you stay an extra day or so to really take in in this very special part
of China. Bring food supplies to be able to self cater some of your meals as
supplies are limited once you are there.
Great Views, Comfortable Place
We stayed at this home during the October 2009 Holiday and my birthday. Had a great time enjoying the outdoor space, outdoor shower and views of the Great Wall. The rooms are comfortable and the house is really beautifully designed. The only (very) minor downside is the kitchen. Totally sufficent if you are not planning extravagant meals, but a little small and underequipped if you want to make much beyond basics. No oven. Small, but sufficent fridge. We love the Schoolhouse team.
