The Old Fort is the only fully restored historic plantation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, dating back to before 1763 (that's the earliest established date from ancient maps) when French settlers started migrating to the Ca...ribbean. It is ideal for guests that seek something different to the ordinary, those that want utmost relaxation in a special and magical location. We have been recommended by various international publications as the perfect place to go to unwind, boasting an exceptional venue that can also host any special events such as a wedding or romantic honeymoon.
Extremely private yet only minutes away from the best beaches, we are proud to offer hard-to-find classical ambiance in a beautiful natural setting. The Old Fort Historic Estate has a breath-taking location on top of a large undisturbed estate that stretches over several hillsides down to the Atlantic Ocean. Spectacular views, one can only dream of, overlook the horizon and the numerous Eastern and Southern Grenadine Islands. Not only can one see Bequia's close neighbour, chic Mustique which according to many can be quite uninspiring, but on a clear day also distant Grenada, which lies over 50 miles away.
The Old Fort reflects plantation house roots and has a total of eight low-key lux rooms. Numerous indoor and outdoor sitting areas allows you to enjoy island living to the fullest. There are many activities to choose from, for instance hiking through one of the many nature trails that leads you through the estate down to a private beach, or simply just enjoy our grand pool, which according to Gully Wells, who is one of the senior writers for magazines such as Condé Nast Traveller, "is one of the most beautiful in the world".

At first glance, Bequia may seem remote and difficult to get to but do not let this deter you from visiting this wonderful island. There are several international airports throughout the Caribbean that serve as "gatewaysâÂÂ, from where you can then connect with a local carrier to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Some of the major international airports include Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad and Martinique, all offering daily flights to St. Vincent from where you can then take the enjoyable ferry trip to Bequia.
Most visitors find it more convenient to fly into Barbadosâ Grantley Adams International Airport, as there are direct flight connections several times a day to Bequia. You can book either a scheduled flight or a private charter (which is a particularly attractive option for larger groups). Another popular route would be taking a flight into St. Vincent via any of the major Caribbean islands with Liat Airlines. From the airport, you can take a short taxi ride to the ferry terminal (approximately 5 - 10 minutes drive from the St. Vincent airport), followed by a ferry ride to Bequia (takes about an hour, port-to-port or 20 minutes with the fast ferry). The ferry is a wonderful experience and a number of visitors choose this way of getting to Bequia due to the beauty of the passage across from St. Vincent. Please note that the ferry runs on a fixed schedule, which means that you should give yourself sufficient time to arrive in St. Vincent and get to the ferry terminal before the last ferry leaves. You can also plan to spend a night in St. Vincent, which can be a great experience, or we can assist in arranging a boat that will pick you up and get you to Bequia in a short space of time.
At present, St. Vincent is constructing its own international airport, with plans to be completed in 2014. The Old Fort Bequia - The Only Fully Restored Historic Plantation In St. Vincent And The Grenadines. Bequia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Additional Location Information
Bequia (pronounced bek-way) is known by many as \"the big little islandâ. Although it only measures 7 square miles (18 km2), it is the largest of the Grenadine islands in the country St. Vincent and the Grenadines, located in the Lesser Antilles, south of St. Lucia and west of Barbados. The islandâs population of approximately 5,000 is a friendly mix, which trace their ancestry back to Africa, Portugal, India, Ireland and the indigenous Carib Indians. Yet, the spoken language is English due to British colonial rule before the country gained its independence in 1979.
There are two seasons in Bequia, the dry season lasting from January â May and the rainy season (June â December), which always comes as a blessing due to the fact that Bequia is completely reliant on rain for its water. Bequia lies just below and west of the hurricane belt (the last hurricane that hit St. Vincent and the Grenadines with full force was in 1898), with temperatures ranging from about 75 °F (24 °C) to 85 °F (29 °C) throughout the year. The trade winds that blow in from the northeast to the southwest average about 14 knots, giving a cooling breeze to the island. The temperature of the peripheral waters is about 85 °F (29 °C) every day of the year, making it perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving year round.
While one reads all about the more visited Caribbean destinations such as the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, the Caymans, and St. Martin, it's often hard to find information about St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One reason is that St. Vincent, a bountiful island with vast coconut and banana plantations, in the past never primarily depended on tourism as a source of income, and another is that the Grenadines are remote and can only be reached by yachts or commuter airlines. As a result, these islands are the perfect haven for travellers searching for quiet, beautiful getaways surrounded in natural splendours, rather than islands full of glitzy hotels, casinos and jet loads of tourists.
The romantic island of Bequia was named the island of the clouds (although some now say it was named the crutch because of its shape) by the Carib Indians and has changed little with time. Due to its seclusion from the rest of the world, Bequia has built up a strong seafaring history, with age-old traditions in boat building, fishing and even whaling, being one of the few places in the world where limited whaling is still allowed by the International Whaling Commission. It has also been a sanctuary for sailors long before any other visitors discovered the Grenadines.
Gold-sandy beaches, many of which disappear into coves that are excellent for sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling, encircle Bequia. The centre of the island is hilly and forested, providing a dramatic backdrop to the bays and beaches. Admiralty Bay, the island's natural harbour, is a favourite anchoring spot for yachtsmen from all over the world, and here visitors can enjoy the quaint waterfront, lined with bars, restaurants and craft shops. Isolated enough to remain relatively unspoiled, yet lively enough to be stimulating and entertaining, Bequia provides a blend of the old and new that many find perfect.
On Bequia you will meet some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean that will welcome you to the island and make you feel at home immediately. It is also a great place to make new international friends from all over the world, go on a day sail, go hiking, or just \"lime\" under a coconut tree with your favourite beverage. Bequiaâs simple, unhurried lifestyle and beauty boasts a magical charm that leaves visitors wanting more.
