Eclipse house is perched 280' above the sea, surrounded by Saint Vincent and the southern Grenadines. Its upper deck sits above resounding blowholes into which the waves crash, echoing like distant cannons.

Tom Johnston broke ground for Eclipse House in 1971 for a group of recent graduates of Princeton University, Tom�s alma mater. Though skeptical of their dedication to completing the house, Tom soon found these men and, later, their wives and children to be among the most dedicated �Moonholers.� The house sits 280� above sea level atop the rocky spine of of the island. Iguana...s and sea birds visit the cascading ponds and grackles invade at breakfast time. Orchids cling to stones on the paths between the rooms. Flame trees, buenavista trees, bougainvillea, and frangipani bloom in alternate seasons. Orchids cling to the rocks inside the house.

A ten-minute walk from the Moonhole entrance along a winding stone path that hugs the south side of the island, Eclipse House offers absolute privacy and magnificent views of the southern Grenadines, St. Vincent, and the uninhabited western tip of Bequia.

The main room and living area are built around a central column. The 17� long dining table seats 20, with a �throne� at the head. A large whale rib forms the bar, with barstools topped with whale vertebrae as seats. Hammocks swing on the outdoor decks.

The master bedroom looks out over a deep gorge to the sea below. In rough weather waves crashing into �blow-holes� at the water�s edge sound like distant cannon. The �Annex� � an anteroom that forms the entrance to this bedroom � has a protected seating area that can be used as a child�s bed.

The �Gum Tree� bedroom overlooks the islands to the south. Gigantic boulders form one wall along the walkway to the lily pond outside the door of the bedroom. Shaded by trees and open to the breezes on all sides, the bedroom is akin to a tree house.

The king bed in the �Cave� bedroom faces St. Vincent, whose distant lights flicker through the leaves like a diadem at night. Named for its cavernous entrance, this bedroom, like the other two, has its own separate bathroom with an uninterrupted view of the sea.

Eclipse House can comfortably accommodate six people. Because of its remoteness and altitude, we recommend it only to those who feel fit enough to ascend the path.

The rental fee for Eclipse House is $1,500 per week, which includes the wages of the staff member who cares for the guests. Our staff will prepare meals at tenant's request, clean house and provide laundry services. Tenants are required to pay for the cost of food and beverages prior to departure.
