Description from the owner

One of three self catering properties in the Scottish Borders, all designed for two people. This property has been awarded four star GOLD by Visit Britain so a high standard is assured. Mill Wharf is a contemporary apartment on the third floor (lift to door) of a historic converted granary,The flat overlooks the river Tweed estuary and its famous flock of swans, and the small working harbor of Berwick-upon-Tweed. A bright, modern flat formed in an interesting converted building makes an unusual but very pleasant holiday let. It is comfortably furnished and well equipped. The elevated position is a key feature. An easy walk into town made driving unnecessary and the car could be left in the secure covered parking area. Berwick is a fascinating if somewhat overlooked holiday destination ideal for those who have an interest in history. It's also an ideal base for visiting many places of interest in the surrounding area including Edinburgh.
The owners are keen to ensure you enjoy your stay, endeavour to meet you on arrival and provide comprehensive information on local attractions (researched by themselves, not just leaflets) and a welcome pack of local produce.
We rarely holiday in the same place twice but if returning to Berwick would definitely check for availability again.

I can accept Bijou, but the hosts treat you like school children, avoid the meet & greet at all costs!

Bedroom a joke, had more room in a caravan!

Beware hamper, chocolate was out of date, complimentary beer was just 'apple juice?

Experimented with remainder on local wildlife.(Have'nt been reported yet!)

as for having the audacity to charge upwards of £9 for a bottle of wine is quite ridiculous.

(anyone knows a decent bottle of "Plonk" is at least £15!)

choice of pictures & layout extremely annoying, had to move settee just open oven door!

      Overpriced

We are really sorry if any aspect of the properties we own disappoints a guest. We like to meet all our guests and, at Mill Wharf especially, find it very useful because of the complicated access to the development. This guest states that he came to play golf which, given the dreadful weather he had to endure, would have been difficult. While there are local courses, we don't advertise this as a convenient property for a golf break. Unfortunately, the bedroom was designed by somebody else and has inadequate space round the foot of the bed - we intend to correct this. It does have a wall-mounted tv, DAB radio, IPOD station, range of fitted wardrobes and a great view to the south of town. We offer all guests a special "welcome basket" of high quality local produce. It seems strange that this one guest had "out of date" chocolate from Karen but didn't bother to tell us about it so that it could be replaced. We used to include a bottle of beer from a local micro-brewery in the basket but a number of guests asked that we include a non-alcoholic drink instead so we include organic apple juice from the Flemings farm at Greenlaw. We continue to offer wine as our other proeprties are not so close to shops as Mill Wharf is. We only offer estate or chateau bottled wine at £9 per bottle. We are not clear why this guest "had to move the settee just to open oven door" as the settee is placed to allow adequate room for the oven door to open before guests arrive and the room is nearly 5 metres wide. Mill Wharf is a conversion of a former granary and, as such, there are bound to be compromises when it comes to design but the development has deservedly won many awards for the quality of its design. Our flat enjoys a 4* "gold" award from "Visit Britain" which is an award given to very few self-catering properties. We are very sorry this guest had a disappointing stay but delighted that so many others enjoy their stay as is shown by our other reviews.

We can thoroughly recommend this apartment, having stayed for 4 nights recently. The hosts had thought of everything including a delightful welcome pack. They had even gone the extra mile to ensure our holiday was cost efficient by booking train tickets for us at local/cheapest prices. Thank you.
The apartment is delightful: clean, comfortable, safe and perfectly located for walks in to Berwick and also Spitall beach promenade. A great holiday destination.

Left on 07/30/2012 for a stay in July 2012

The apartment is excellent, bathroom is luxury shower, everything is also so new - the whole 'Mill Wharf' complex is a feat of architecture. Tweedmouth is a tiny corner of Berwick, but only 5 minutes walk from the city centre. It's ideal for cyclists, but also for middle aged people like us, with no car, who are only looking to have nice walks. From Berwick there is reliable public transport. We visited alnwick and Lindisfarne, and the rest of the time we took beach walks, went along the ramparts, visited the local museum. The barracks are impressive if one loves war, which I dont. But the local museum has a gem of a watercolour collection which is only viewable there, for any folks who may be artistically minded. I produced ten watercolours myself from the window of the flat.

The owners were lovely, they gave us all information in one go, and seemed very knowleadgeble. Also, they made sure we could contact them in case of problems - but there were none. This couple has the organisation to the place down to a T.

We had the most relaxing holiday ever in ten years. Berwick is one of these places where the locals are friendly - but genuinely so. It's neither England nor Scotland and for this old cosmopolite this was the perfect situation. We enjoyed the small ceremony of crowning the Salmon Queen, which was a nice touch and a wonderful surprise. As for food Lizzie cooks wonderful stuff at the Sally Port. They also had a shack at the Old Bridge where we had langoustines and mussels. Some parts of the town are run down, but very few, and I understand this is going to change soon. Unfortunately, like everywhere else there is a Cafe Nero, a Boots, you know the drill. No character in certain areas - yet next to Boots there will be a Hog Roast Van and local produce stall, honey, soap - small things.

The apartment was ideally situated and the secure parking a huge benefit. We had everything we needed and the 'welcome basket' was a delightful extra. We hardly needed to use the car as Berwick was 'just over the bridge', the station was nearby and walking trails nearby. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable week in a wonderful location/county.

      Absolutly amazing weekend!

Left on 06/18/2012 for a stay in May 2012

I had an absolutly terrific time at Mill Wharf. I should mention that I'm recently married and my wife and I chose to tour the UK as part of our honeymoon. Our second stop on our tour was at Berwick upon Tweed. I was particularly interested in wondering the old town walls. My wife and I came up by train from London, unfortunatly our train was delayed by several hours during the trip, but thankfully the owners John and Christine Ward had rang me the previous day to make wine arrangements so even though i had their contact details it was nice to know that they take very good care of their customers. They picked an excellent choice as my wife has particular tastes. The owners met us at the train station and drove us to the house, we were very thankful for it as we'd been stuck on a train for 8 hours! As soon as we got to the flat I was very pleased. The flat has a very modern look to it mixed with some old antiquies, there were several intersting poster around the flat which i looked at with great interest. The owners showed my wife and I around the flat and asked what we were going to do on our trip out. If they had not asked I wansn't sure what we'd have done. They came to our aid by suggesting several walks that we could do i beleive it was called Saint Cuthburts Way or something very similar. We also found in the flat all the local bus times and tide times for a place called Holy Island. (A place to visit next time?). Our bed was very comfy that night and i'm glad i opted for the sheets due to the warm weather (The owners ask upon booking whether i wanted duvet or sheets). Overall i could not find a single fault with the property and i would happily stay there again, however i also know that there are two other propeties owned by the owners so we'll have to do some real decision making next time we stay!!!
