Downe Cottages provide a rare combination of private luxury cottages with an excellent leisure facility attached (spacious gym and spa plus a reading room available from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. each day) located in the heart of the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Whatever the weather it is possible to thoroughly enjoy your visit to North Devon with the combination of a warm and spacious cottage and the extensive leisure facilities.
Clematis cottage is ideal for romantic breaks with an exceptionally large and beautiful bedroom.
Clematis Cottage is within part of a two storey 'L' shaped farm building built just after the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th Century.
Clematis opens out onto a charming shared inner courtyard area with garden table and chairs which is a beautiful sun trap.The ground floor provides an open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The living area has a log burner and a 3-seater sofa and a 2-seater sofa. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and washer/dryer. The dining area has an antique pine table and four dining chairs. On the first floor you have an open plan bedroom with sea views through full length French windows over the Atlantic to Lundy Island, an en-suite shower room, King bed (5'), two bedside tables, chest of drawers, fitted wardrobe and a three quarters length mirror hung on the wall. Central heating in all rooms. Communal gardens. Garage parking. Bathrobes are provided for adults. Baby Baskets on request (cot - not linen, highchair, liquidizer, sterilizer, changing mat, baby bath).
Gym & Spa Facilities at Downe
The Gym
Our gym is available to guests aged over sixteen and is open from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. each day during their stay.
The gym is beautifully located in the Atlantic Room and has views across fields out to Hartland Point and Lundy Island beyond. (Lundy Island is where the Atlantic meets the Bristol Channel.)
The gym is spacious, light and airy and equipped with aerobic equipment, free weights, an ab trainer, an exercise bench and exercise mats.
All of the aerobic equipment is either Life Fitness equipment
(including a treadmill, a cross trainer, a stepper, an upright cycle and a recumbent cycle) or Concept 11 equipment (a rower).
The gym is accessed through the Reading Room in the Conservatory. There is a raised area here overlooking the gym equipment with a seating for the less energetic to sit and admire their dynamic partners!
The Atlantic Room also houses a library and dvd collection for our guests to use.
French windows from the Gym lead out to a raised patio area with tables and chairs looking out to Lundy Island - another opportunity to enjoy the wonderful surroundings.
The Spa
The Spa consists of a spa bath (with seats for eight adults), a steam room (with seats for seven adults) and a sauna.
The Spa is open from 6.a.m. to 10 p.m. each evening (the spa bath is available on request) .
Towels are provided and the cost of both Gym and Spa are included in the cottage rental.
Our home from home cottages provides lovely accommodation for a relaxing break throughout the year.

“Friendly hospitality and comfortable accomodation in a beautiful place”
Clematis Cottage has a stunning view looking over to the magical island of Lundy. The cottage was a home from home with plenty of space to unload our baggage after a day on the beach or out exploring the local area. There are a variety of spaces and places to enjoy the tranquil surroundings or use up unspent energy. The communal courtyard was peaceful, whilst the field with the swing/slide climbing frame gave opportunity for our toddler to practice running. Linda and Jeremy were prefect hosts, never far away to answer random questions and always had time to pass the time of day with you. We have holidayed in Devon and Cornwall for many years staying in cottages and this is my favourite. We will be back to visit. Many thanks to Linda and Jeremy.

“Delightful Devon at its best”
What a great stay myself and my wife had at Downes Cottages. A fantastic secluded base to explore the delights of Devon and Cornwall. Beautifully appointed and not a single detail missed by Jeremy and Lynda. The cottage had everything we could have possibly needed, extremely comfortable, tastefully decorated and very well equipped. The facilities even include use of a well equipped gym and covered parking. We will definitely be booking again.
