Moreno ValleyToo Many Problems
Left on 10/06/2011 for a stay in September 2011
When I first called Big Bear Vacations I was actually talking to someone in Oregon. I described to the lady helping me with reservations what I was looking for, but because she was out of state, she was unfamiliar with Big Bear and wasn't much help. Second, the whole reservation process was a mess. They didn't even put my name on the reservation. It was a just a bunch of letters where my name should have been. Then they over-charged my account, which had to be taken care of.
The check-in process is pretty simple, but there were problems with the cabin. First of all, one of my requests was piece-and-quiet. I understand that this is out of the control of Big Bear Cabins, but apparently the city of Big Bear decided to do road construction starting at 7:00am the days I was there.
Another problem with the cabin is that there was an ant infestation in the kitchen. We did call maintenance and informed them, they did offer to come out, but we told them that we would take care of it. We did have to be careful not to leave any food on the counter, and had to move the trash can out from under the sink.
We also were given no instructions on what to do with the trash when the can gets full. We wound up driving it down to a business dumpster because there are no large trash cans on the property.
When I made the reservation there was no way of knowing that we would be sleeping in a queen size bed. I am over 6'4" tall and a queen bed is a little small for my wife and I. Needless to say that we didn't sleep well.
The only other thing that we would have changed is that there is a creek that runs behind the cabin and it would be nice if you could completely turn off the jacuzzi so you could listen to creek at night. You can't sleep with the window open because the whine of the jacuzzi motor will keep you awake. It runs pretty much all the time. -

I payed for a place that has a jacuzzi and it didn't work. For as much as we paid, it should have worked. Big Bear did not compensate me in any way; Therefore I will not ever rent from Big Bear again.

I am sorry you did not feel you got what you paid for. We do our best to fix any problems that may arise during your stay if we are given the chance to send out our maintenance personell. Our records show you were given a gift certificate for a future stay. Again we truly apologize, if we would have been notified during your stay we could have fixed the spa for you.

This is a very clean, cozy cabin perfectly suited for a couple or family of four. We really enjoyed our amenities including the surround sound and the hot tub. The free standing fireplace does give off a lot of heat so we were toasty warm. It had everything we needed and we were very pleased with our stay. The only thing that would make this place better would be if it were a little further away from the neighbors and to get really picky, it could use new pots and pans. Overall, we couldn't ask for anything better for the price.

Left on 07/21/2011 for a stay in July 2011
the first hour we had to go to the nearest store and buy a can of raid which was almost completely used up by the time we checked out. the picture is deceiving; the property is not fully secluded, for there are neighbors to the left & right. the beds were extremely uncomfortable to sleep in which resulted in my spouse and I to sleep less than five hours each night. everything else, however, was fine. i do wish that the jacuzzi water was cleaned before we got there. i did smell the chlorine, but there was still sand, dirt, and other little things in the water.
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 08/01/2011
Manager
Thank you for responding to our survey. The mattress has been replaced with a Serta Pillowtop. We hope this allows for any future guest to rest better. Many homes in the mountains do have spiders. We do our best to keep them at bay. We do have an in-house housekeeping service to rectify any issues that arise during your stay. We clean our spas at least once a week and prior to any guest arrival, The spa is outside on the back deck near a sesonal creek. The daily wind sometimes blows sand and silt under the spa cover--it is not air tight. Please visit Big Bear agian and have a pleasant stay.

Left on 07/14/2011 for a stay in July 2011
Cabin was very cute. Wasn't expecting a leather couch in the living room, needed to be a cloth couch. Bathroom shower corners had mold needs to be cleaned with bleach in there. Master bedroom bed squeeks when you even sit on it, so we slept on the bed upstairs. And the directions for the spa need to be more explanatory rather than just turning it on and adjusting the temp with the up and down arrows. The directions need to tell us to leave the cover on and to be more specific about how the temp works.
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 08/01/2011
Manager
Thank you for responding to our survey. We have looked at the pictures on the web site to make sure the leather on the sofa is discernable. We hope the picture helps future renters in making decisions about properties. The shower has been bleached and looks good. We are sorry the instructins for the spa were not specific enough for you. We will try to make them easier for other to understand. Again, thank you for responding to our survey.

Left on 10/28/2010 for a stay in October 2010
The cabin itself was cute, but small. I wouldn't recommend this cabin for the 6 people it suggests, but maybe 4 people would be fine (although, there are enough beds for 6). Hot tub on the deck was great, but the bed mattresses were covered in plastic covers that kept everyone from sleeping. The location was perfect for us, going to Oktoberfest. Overall nice cabin with a few quirks.

Our Moon Shadow #939 is a very good and all around great getaway cabin that has developed many repeat clientele. To address the occupancy rating; We do advise that this home is more suitable for a family of four but it's always good to be able to accommodate more of the family. We have also removed the mattress cover to make the nights more comfortable. I would personally recommend Moon Shadow #939 to anyone for a good al year-round retreat!!!

Left on 08/02/2010 for a stay in July 2010
We enjoyed the proximity to National Forest, hiking, creek, and Van Dusen Canyon (which is beautiful!). The house was cute and fairly comfortable. Three improvements would help this cabin: take off plastic bed coverings in loft, get some brighter lighting for reading, and replace shower head. Otherwise, it was a nice stay.
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 01/26/2011
Manager
Dear guest, Thank you for your input on the cabin. We are so glad you enjoyed the cabins location. We think being right next to the National Forest is a great way to spend a vacation in the mountains and were so glad you agree. The plastic bed covers were in place to protect the integrity of the mattresses and they have been removed to better accommodate guests. As well, the shower head has been replaced. We have taken your suggestions into serious consideration and thank you for the feed back. It is through these reviews that we can make strides to better serve you. Have a great day! We all had a great time, it's a beautiful cabin and very cozy. I think that we
would all appreciate it, however, if Big Bear Vacations would advertise their
cabins correctly. It is not off the beaten path, all the mountainous areas
nearby are blocked off by fences, and there are neighbors. The pictures made
the cabin seem like we had to park far away and walk to the cabin, that there
were no neighbors and that we would be staying in the wilderness - things
that we were looking forward to a lot. But we had a great time and would enjoy
coming back. -

Southern CaliforniaThe journey IS the destination - part 1
Left on 02/04/2010 for a stay in January 2010
At the end of Jan, SoCal was hit by 4 storms in one week. We had this cabin rented from BBV for a Fri and Sat night stay. After assessing the severity of the storm and realizing that it will be chaotic to try to make it up there for the weekend, we called on Thur to see if we could move our vacation to another weekend. We were told that we couldn't do that. The best she could do for us was move it up or back a day. We called Fri to move it back a day bc we knew we couldn't get up there trying to drive through the storm. Against our better judgment, we decided to make the trip on Sat bc we didn't want to lose our money. Our drive up there should have only taken 2-3 hrs max. At the 7th hr into the drive, we heard that they may be only letting residents up the mtn. We called again to ask what was going to happen if we couldn't get up and they told us that we could just postpone it to another day. The company recently changed it's policy because of the storm situation. We already spent half the day driving so we continued our trek. They opened the roads to everyone and we reached there after 12 hrs. We checked in and drove up to the cabin. The road the cabin was on had not been correctly plowed so we could not drive up it. We called BBV to tell them about the situation and they said they'd reimburse us for a hotel room if we couldn't get to the cabin. After getting stuck in the snow there we called them again to get more details about the hotel reimbursement but they were closed and their 24 hour emergency person didn't know anything about it. We called hotels and couldn't find any available. We decided to park wherever we could, walk up the road with our luggage & shovel snow to make a pathway to the front door of the cabin. At 11:30pm at night I was shoveling 4ft deep snow with a shovel borrowed from a neighbor. BBV said they were supposed to plow the road and a pathway to the front door, but never did it. This cozy cabin was perfect for my family vacation. Located on the edge of town, it was a quite with a beautiful view of the woods/mountains. The cabin was just the right size, small enough to be cozy and personal but big enough to not feel cramped. We comfortably fit a party of 5 people. If your going during winter the cabin has a great heating system that will keep you warm and toasty. kitchen was fully loaded, didn't need to bring anything except for food of course. BigBearVacations was quick easy to work with. The only thing that I could complain about really had nothing to do with the cabin itself was the fact that trash needed to be taken to a dump site in town. The trash issue was to keep bears from coming into neighborhoods so cant really complain.

Orange County, CAGreat location, had everything we needed
Left on 01/13/2010 for a stay in November 2009
We stayed for 3 nights after Thanksgiving for a quick getaway with our 3
small children. The cabin was perfect four our needs. The loft space has 2
beds, which was more than enough for our 2, 5, and 8 year old boys. They
loved it up there, although it did get quite hot up there when we had the
fire running downstairs. The main bedroom downstairs was comfortable
too, but was colder at night (use a second blanket).
The plastic mattress cover didn't squeak as much as other people said it
would. I slept comfortably, and I am a light sleeper.
The kitchen had everything we needed, but we found ourselves eating out
most of the time because we were too lazy to cook. The cabin is about 10
mins from supermarkets and restaurants, so we found it ideally located. In
fact, I think we were better off on the north side of the lake in this cabin,
and away from the noise and bustle of the main town area.
From the cabin you can walk north to the end of the street and off into the
forest/hill area, which we really enjoyed. Very peaceful and scenic.
We had trouble with one of the locks on the front door; it required some
jiggling to get the lock to open, and they gave us the wrong key to unlock
the padlock for the jacuzzi. So make sure you arrive early enough to check
everything in case you need to run down to the main office to get the right
keys, etc, before they close.
They sell firewood at the main office, but you can get it much cheaper at
the supermarket, so don't feel compelled to buy that if they offer it to you
upon check in.
There were some gruesome/explicit stories in the cabin visitors logbook
about the exploits of previous guests which were disturbing to my Christian
sensibilities, so don't read it, it might put you off getting into the jacuzzi.
Maybe they were fake entries, but it was enough to make us feel
uncomfortable.
The price was good for the quality; everything decent up there is expensive.
We will stay there again. -

Left on 10/23/2009 for a stay in October 2009
the place is nice, adequate sleeping for a couple or small family. I went with my girlfriend in October and the place worked for us, but I can see where it would be cramped during ski season. the stars were awesome, location good. Master bedroom is good & accesses the deck, Upstairs loft has two beds but lacks privacy. Hot Tub is great, but the tree next to the Deck has to come down, it drips sh*# down all over the spa & blocks out 75% of the sky when you are in it. Lounging space is limited with a small table and one sofa, no chairs (not enough seats). The TV had 3 stations, maybe. Biggest plus-hot tub, biggest minus ? small living room and limited seating.

Left on 07/28/2009 for a stay in June 2009
My wife and I really enjoyed our time in this small yet quaint cabin. There is a fully loaded kitchen although it looks small on the picture it does have everything including a fridge that you cant see on the pic. We enjoyed the quiet that the area brought and we "Really" enjoyed the Hot tub.I'm sure we gave the neighbors a memorable show. The BBQ grill was very clean and convienient. Nice surround sound on the T.V. As stated in some of the other comments the beds were noisy but comfortable. Over all it was nice. If you are looking for small with everything you need to feel at home this is the place. Oh and the Property management team was very helpful. The key that was on the key ring for the Hot Tub was the wrong key and we simply called the Property team and they sent a guy out within 30 minutes to unlock the Hot Tub and provide us with the proper key. He arrived and didnt disturb us once while he serviced the tub. Overall we enjoyed our stay. The only draw back would be the surronding area, its not like your normal Big Bear scene , more like "across the tracks" type of area but very quiet never the less. This place is also just a short drive to the grocery stores and other shops which made it even more comfortable for us as we bought some food & movies from Blockbuster video located in the shopping area. I hope this comment helps any one who is considering spending time here.

The rental cabin was more than we expected. My husband and I had our own bedroom and our two kids had their own upstairs. The decor was great (no flowers, just a mountain feel). The hot tub was wonderful and hot. The tv had surround sound, the kitchen was fully furnished. We had a washer and dryer. The only thing I have to complain about is the tile in the bathroom needs updating. I would give this cabin rental 5 stars. And if we go back we would stay there again.

However, one of the things we didn't like was that someones called big bear vacation saying that we were 9 people which we weren't and that was something that rouen our trip. But everthing else was nice about the cabin it had everything in it and the greatest thing of all was that it was in a nice and common neighborhood, execpted for those who told on us :{. But I do recommend this cabin for a family of 4 or 5 no more than that and so that my comments about the cabin. :}

Four of us stayed here for New Year's. The cabin was a little smaller than the pictures on the website looked but the sleeping area on the top floor was very nice. The heater worked great and kept us all warm. I would agree with some of the other reviewers in saying that the beds were very uncomfortable and the plastic covering on the matresses was very noisy. Also, I have rented other cabins and the kitchens were well equiped but this one was lacking a few basic items such as paper towels, ice cream scoop, etc. Also, if you plan on taking children take some movies that they would enjoy because the TV had very few channels and none that would be enjoyable to children. The hot tub worked great though and there was a hill in the back yard that was covered with snow so the kids had a great time sliding down in their sleighs. I'm not sure that I would stay here again but only because of the beds. If the beds go, then I would return.

Perfect place for a family. 6 is the good amount. The only downfall is the room downstairs is extremely cold during the winter time, the heat doesn't get there. The next one was that the jacuzzi was lukewarm, even though we turned it up to 100 degrees. but it was loving. I would most definitely book the place again. Washing machine, all the kitchen supplies are there. Youo get such a warm feeling.

This is a charming, quiet cabin, in a lovely location, perfect for a family of 4 as there is a bedroom and a loft. (3 double beds) Everything is in good working order, the beds are comfortable, and the kitchen is fully outfitted with dishes and appliances. The downstairs bedroom was a little chilly, but fine for sleeping with warm blankets. If you like it warmer, you might bring a small space heater. The bathroom has a great shower and an awesome heater that works so fast. (They must have installed that recently as there were complaints about the freezing bathroom before.) The hot tub only gets up to 101 degrees, so it is not quite hot enough for winter chill, but would be perfect in the summer. My kids enjoyed it anyway! We had a great ski weekend and loved the comfy sofa and cosy feel of the place!! Recommended!

We had a great time in Big Bear and the cottage was fantastic. The entire family loved the quaintness of the place. The kids loved the hot tub as did the adults once the kids were in bed. Located out of town a little way made it even better. The loft easly provided enough room for the kids to sleep and play plus giving everyone a little bit of space. The only regret we have about Moon Shadows hideout was we only stayed three nights we could have easly stayed two weeks. Would happily stay there again if l am ever back in California. Kitchen was very good with every modern con which helped keep the cost down as we were able to do our own cooking. Heater worked well and the bathroom was more than adequet for a family of four.

This is a beautifully furnished cabin with lots of nice touches and a very rustic feel to the decor. Its generally comfortable and there was plenty of room for two adults and two teenage boys. The hot tub was a great selling point for us and we really enjoyed using it especially at night when the stars were amazing. Only downpoints we can think of are the beds which were not the most comfortable and were covered in a plastic matress protector which was really noisy every time you moved. Also we found the airconditioning took a long time to make any effect. An extra movie channel on the tv would have been a bonus. Great shower though.

Thank you for your request. There arer very few homes in Big Bear with air conditioning, which is why it never came on

The cabin is very quaint but with all the modern amenities. It is
great for a romantic getaway or a small family. The hot tub was
relaxing... just work on the privacy factor. The neighbors living
room looks right at the hot tub. You can watch their TV, not as
private as the picture looks. Please also figure out a better
solution for the beds. Plastic sheeting is very uncomfortable and
wakes you up! Despite these problems, we would return again.
Maybe it will be fixed for next time!Response from Big Bear Vacations - 10/15/2008

Thank you for your response. The plastic bedcovers have been replaced and more comfortable pillows have been added. There are trees being planted to make the property more private

My husband and I took a week vacation to Big Bear, and we really enjoyed our stay in this cabin. It had a big, nice kitchen and came with all the cooking utensils, dishes, stemware, etc. that you would need. It's a pretty good location, too. Very close to the Big Bear Village (not walking close, but short drive close), and right next to the lake. The only problems were: the bed was not that comfortable, and it's not really as secluded as you'd think by the picture. There was a family with kids living right next door, so it's not like you could skinny dip in the hot tub or have sex on the deck outside (which was a let down...). However, we've never stayed in a cabin before and this one was very nice. If outside nudity is not your concern, then I would definately recommend this cabin. You might want to bring your own pillow, though, the ones they have aren't that comfortable.

We enjoy this wonderful vacation, but this cabin had some problems that romaines unsolved. First DVD didn't work and we couldn't watch movies and Jacuzzi didn't heat enough and chlorine was saturated. I hope i could get this cabin in the future, unfortunately problems remained unsolved.

Thank you for taking the time to review our cabin. We have put in for a new DVD player and are checking the spa. The way you describe the spa sounds like it was drained and re filled which takes about 24 hours to heat up all the way. We have specific guidelines we need to leave the spa in before use and sometime you can smell the chlorine. Let me assure you we have safety levels we follow when certifying the spa is ready for use. We take your input from these evaluations to help us to do better next time and appreciate your time spent here.
