Nice little cabin with a jacuzzi out back. Everything was great! We'll stay there again, just need to remember to brin our own towels since the ones there were a little small and kinda rough. Everything else was great though. Close to the lake and all the attractions in town.

The cabin was ok. Definitely could use some new decor. I was highly annoyed with the fact that the windows don't lock from inside or out and in the middle of the night the window behind the dinner table would fly open. The first time it happened at about 3am I had fallen asleep on the couch and wake to hearing the blinds loudly moving around. I thought someone was trying to get into the cabin, I screamed for my husband, he runs out the front door ready to crack a guy...come to find out, the window doesn't lock and the wind makes it swing open. Then we had a not one, but 2 roaches run across the table...one as I was reading the reviews in the guest book (which I read someone else had that same window problem..not sure why nobody has done anything about it!) After the window flew open I couldn't sleep well at all knowing someone could just creep into the cabin. I don't think its necessary to have to drag your own trash away and leave the cabin spotless when you are paying $400+ a night. Cleaners come in anyhow, I guess the only thing they really have to do is change the bedding (hopefully b/c that red flannel blanket seems like its probably always there and I don't think they have several of the same ones??) and clean the toilets. I wanted to get away for a little vacation, then I found myself cleaning more then relaxing b/c the cabin had to be in the same shape it was when walking in. I'm sure the cleaners can haul 2 bags of trash away, to charge $50 to do that is just ridiculous! A package had been delivered when we got there and I called right away to the office. They said someone would be by to pick it up (im sure it was for the owner)...3 days later we check out and it was still sitting on the front doorstep. Let me say the pictures make the place look better than it really is...it was a lil too rough for me. Read more
We will have maintenance look into the issues of the windows. We want our guest to feel safe when staying up here in Big Bear. In regards to the trash, per the City of Big Bear Lake our guest are required to remove their trash to one of the off site disposal sites. We know that can be an inconvenience so we offer a trash pick up service for our guest.
We hope to see you in Big Bear soon!

Checked into La Petite Retreat 12/19 before the snow started. The staff at Cool Cabins was pleasant & professional. I really didnt know what to expect when we got to the cabin because all of the arrangements were done on-line. We brought cleaning supplies, our own towles and some extra blankets. On entering the cabin, we were pleasantly surprised. The cabin was clean and very homey. We didnt need our cleaning supplies. As promised, the kitchen was fully stocked with dishes, utencils and an array of cookware. We really enjoyed our stay (3 Nights/2 Days). The fireplace was large and ready to use and the hot tub was a nice plus. The negative... The 1st night, I noticed a spider web. We knocked it down and went to bed. The next day, I noticed another spider web. That night we killed a spider in the Mud room. The last morning at the cabin before leaving, I was checking to make sure we had packed everything, I pulled the cover on the bed up to make sure we were not leaving anything behind on the unmade bed and there was a huge spider laying in the bed carrying an Egg Sack. I was horrified and my baby quickly came to kill it. I thought it was dead, but after being smashed several times with a large magazine, the spider got up and started crawling away. This time we killed it for sure, but left it on the bed for the staff to see. Cabins are meant to be rustic, but I really don't want to sleep anywhere where there are things crawling. Especially Spiders!!! Yikes !!! Glad I saw the one in the room on our last day. It could have ruined our trip. The cabin needs to be exterminated and the cob webs cleaned up. Oil of Peppermint is a safe way to rid indoors of spiders. They hate it and it will make the cabins smell really good. Just a suggestion. Over-all we really had a wonderful time and plan on using Cool Cabins to rent our next cabin.

Quiet neighborhood, but close enough to all that Big Bear has to offer- hiking trails, restaurants, town. Pros: great fireplace, hot tub, big & fully stocked kitchen, price, very homey. Cons: bathroom is a bit small but ok for just 2 people or small family, very difficult to find if you check in at night. Address is not clearly marked, bring a flashlight. Pros definitely outweigh the cons, especially for the price. If you're on the fence about reserving this cabin, allow us to convince you-- rent it. You won't be disappointed.

Check in at Cool Cabins was quick & easy, staff was nice. Directions to cabin easy to follow. The cabin was homey & comfortable. Very quiet neighborhood with hardly any traffic driving by and No dogs barking. (This was a big plus as we have 5 families in our home neighbor with barking dogs.) The kitchen was well equipped for cooking. The hot tub was great, we used it both nights under the stars. Loved the rain storms, we don't see much rain in the desert. We just really loved the mini-vacation and plan to do this every few months to get away! The only think that I didn't like about the cabin was the light chandelier of antlers above the dining room table. My husband and i both bumped our heads before learning to carefully avoid them. But in spite of that is was wonderful.

We couldnt make our trip and cool cabins policy is a no refund (for absolutly anything) and since no one could check in without the card that had booked the cabin not even our friends could use it. So we were out $400. My advice is to always get the insurance. The place looked pretty in the pics though.

We rented this cabin for 3 days (1/2-1/4/2013) for our winter family vacation and we loved it! We were amazed how fully stocked it was. We didn't need anything but the food and good spirits. Central heater warmed up the house and the fireplace to add some warmth. Hot water worked immediately.
It was real cozy and had cable for the kids. Everything worked fine and we just really enjoyed our stay.

Loved it. From the moment we got there. Everything was just as promised by Cool Cabins. Very romantic for me and my girlfriend we spent 5 days at La Petite and it was wonderful. Everything was in working order. Heater, jacuzzi, fireplace, washer and dryer, we had no problems with mice or any other animal from the woods. We will definitely be returning to La Petite in the future. The only thing i would recommend is a new bed. The bed in the room is slightly uncomfortable. But other than that Perfect for a romantic getaway.

We had a very relaxing stay. My husband and i needed a break from our crazy lives. We have three kids and both work full time. The stay at Le Petite Retreat was just what we needed. The hot tub was the best and very relaxing. The cabin was close to town so we found it very easy to get to the village for meals and a movie. We took a boat tour of the lake which was also great! We did have to straighten out the frame of the bed, as it was a little bent. But once we did that, the bed was very comfortable. I would stay here again. Hopefully in the near future.

Flip Flops are definately not good snow shoes

Definitely not what we expected
Left on 04/18/2012 for a stay in April 2012 | Flip Flops are definately not good snow shoes
I planned a nice weekend getaway for my girlfriend's birthday. Call me crazy but its well into spring time so I was thinking some lake-side hiking, a little horseback riding, and maybe going into town so my girlfriend can do a little antiquing (I hate that by the way). No, what we got instead was about 4-feet of snow and we couldn't get the car out of the driveway. Now, this wouldn't have been a problem if I had planned for it, but I packed shorts and a few t-shirts and my flip flops didn't help much.
Fortunately, the cabin we rented was really nice so it made staying inside a comfortable experience as well. The cabin had a fireplace that we kept lit in the evening, the furniture didn't look like it was donated by the Salvation army, the bed was comfortable and had lots of extra blankets and the kitchen was stocked full of pots and pans, plates and silverware. We didn't pack a lot of food so we just ordered pizza and let the delivery guy figure out how to get it to us.
Here are a few observations but I wouldn't really call them "negatives”:
The cabin is pretty small. For us it was perfect-Cozy, clean and comfortable. If you are looking to go with another couple, then things would get a little cramped.
The place has a Jacuzzi. We didn't actually get to use it because it had about 3 feet of snow on top of it. I tried clearing the snow off by hand but there was a lot more swearing than I like so I stopped.
The cabin has a big front porch but no furniture. Bring your own folding chairs.
Although the kitchen has pots and pans, they are scratched. If you don't mind always having to make scrambled eggs then it isn't a problem. But if you're an over easy or sunny side up kind of guy, you might want to bring your own skillet.
Toilet paper is a little rough. So are the towels. Bring your own.

This place was great. It was my first time to Big Bear and my girlfriend and I were looking for a place to spend a few nights on the drive to Vegas. After reading reviews of a lot of cabins in the area I was worried that it was impossible to find a place that didn't have spiders, itchy sheets, dirty furniture, etc. This place was perfect for us though. The sheets were clean and comfortable, the furniture was comfortable, the kitchen was fairly large, there was a washer/dryer, and a fenced in private hottub area. The hottub was cooking at a nice 100 degrees when we arrived but had no trouble bumping it up to 104. There are a few things to be aware of but I would not consider these negatives:
1. The bedroom is pretty small so don't think you're squeezing more than two people in there
2. I would say this place is perfect for a couple but if you're bringing kids you might find it a little cramped
3. The house is by the lake but you can't actually see the lake. It's certainly within walking distance but if you're looking for lake views then this is not the place for you.
4. Watch the ice.
Hardest Review I Ever Had to Write
Left on 01/19/2012 for a stay in January 2012 | AA Family
Since my stay here early this month, I thought many times about how my review should be. I frequently rely on others' reviews and believe that it is also my obligation to provide the same for others.
My stay was three nights and it was very cozy. As my categorized review stars show, it was a wonderful little place for your family. The kitchen had more utensils, plates and other accessories than I expected based on my previous stays at cabins; the furture was pretty new; and the size of the whole place was perfect for four of us. I would have given a 5-star had I only stayed one night.
On the second day, my husband noticed a sizable rat running across the kitchen. We identify ourselves as city people and it freaked us out. I doubted his eyes at first until I saw it. We are not sure if it was just one rat or more than one but we saw them throughtout the rest of our stay. I called to report this and was told that a maintenance guy would be sent to "do something" about it. No maintenance person showed up until our departure and the rat(s) visited us throughout our stay. It or they appeared to have a route and appeared in the same spot only. It is to your right when you enter the kitchen.
This is a difficult review for me because I liked the place. It would be amiss, however, not to disclose what I saw: the rats. Whether the rats can be considered a norm since it is in the mountain, or it is stil unacceptable for a rental house like this tp have rats in them, would be the decision you, as someone looking around for your vacation, have to make. On behalf of Big Bear Cool Cabins I would like to apologize for the issues you experienced during your stay. Upon receipt of your review we immediately sent maintenance with traps and informed the owners of the property that there may be mice. Being that Big Bear is in the national forest one can assume that mice and rodents are often a normal occurrence, and we understand the fact that this is not pleasant. Thank you for taking the time to share this information; we hope you will allow our company to welcome you to Big Bear in the future.

The carpet was a little dirty and the chandalier needs to be attached better to the ceiling. But I'd definitely stay here again.

La Petite Retreat is beat!
Left on 07/17/2011 for a stay in July 2011 | Sara
When my husband and I pulled up to La Petite Retreat immediately we saw that the property was not well maintained. The grass was very overgrown, cobs webs and dirt everywhere. It looked as if it was a foreclosure or abandoned. Upon entry the inside was just as bad as the outside. The carpet was not vacuumed, there was feces on the toilet seat, and fresh white stains on the comforter. My husband and I didn't even want to sit on the furniture because it was so dirty and stained. Because of the condition of the bedding and also because there is not a TV in the bedroom we decided to sleep in the living room on the uncomfortable sofa bed. Again, we pulled out the sofa bed and there were crumbs in it and a children's dirty sock. We called Cool Cabins and they offered for housekeeping to come but we didn't want to deal with the hassle- we were tired and wanted to relax after a long day of travel. The only upside to the cabin was the Jacuzzi tub out back. It was very difficult to operate though and not that warm but once you figure it out, an hour later, it was pretty great. This cabin was overpriced and I would not stay there again. Read more

We really enjoyed our stay in Big Bear during this week, although the wireless internet didn't work, and the bathroom, could have used a little work. Also the fridge, was hard to get set at an accurate temperature, and kept freezing our food. On a positive note, the location was great for morning walks along the lake, and the location was very quiet.

The cabin had everything needed for a great get away. We had a nice stay. Our timing was a bit off with things to do in town. We were kind of in between seasons, but it was nice to have a change of scenery and enjoy time together as a family. For one child the place was perfect and it felt like a real family home.
Practical but not completely functional
Left on 04/09/2011 for a stay in March 2011 | Disappointed
If you are looking for a romantic get away for you and your significant other, I would not recommend this cabin. We came here for vacation after spending two days at a Best Western in Laguna Beach, and I have to be honest and say I was a little disappointed. I am a very visual person, and the living area was below my satisfaction level. The kitchen and eating area are very accommodating, though. It has a large front porch, but no where to sit, so bring your own chairs or use the kitchen chairs.
Pros: In a residential area, so you can enjoy your privacy. Has a hot tub (we didn't use because it was too cold outside). Washer/dryer and full kitchen. Location is close to town.
Cons: Can't access Big Bear Lake by walking to the lake because it's surrounded by fenced private properties.
Living room furniture definitely shows lots of wear/tear. Chairs have stains. Couch cushion had a hole. Very small square "coffee table" had wobbly legs and the siding was peeling off. Small older TV. Lighting not the best and a couple of the lamps were either missing the switch to turn them on or they didn't work at all. Bathroom paint is peeling. The water in the shower took forever to drain. Had to turn off the water during my shower because I was afraid it would run over onto the floor, and I wasn't in the shower very long. Called Big Bear Cool Cabins to report the problem. Not sure if it was resolved because we were gone all day and we didn't receive a message from the maintenance person or Bbcc to indicate the probelm was resolved. There were ants around the bathroom sink, which I guess is to be expected in a cabin ??
I am very sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. Thank you for taking the time to share information regarding your stay; your feedback allows us to remedy any damages, and also to identify any issues that could be improved. I have forwarded the lighting situation, the shower drain, the ants, and the coffee table situation to our maintenance department. The other issues you noted like outdoor seating, the living room furniture, tv, and bathroom paint are items that need to be approved by the homeowner. La Petite Retreat is a favorite for many people. It is a rustic cabin that is set away from the "Big City," but envokes a simpler more relaxing way of life. La Petite Retreat is definately close to the lake, but it is NOT a lakefront, therefore walking to the lake may not be a straight shot. Please feel free to give us a call or email us anytime with any questions or concerns. We look forward to doing business with you in the future.

La Petite Retreat has nice curb appeal from the website photos. When we arrived we noticed it was nothing more than an average cabin in the mountains. We did have a nice weekend, with warmth, a good fireplace, and some family time away from home. But the cabin appeared in need of some attention. For the price we paid for two nights we expected a bit more. The furniture was old, run down, and was covered with old stains. We covered them with blankets to avoid our kids having to sit on them. The coffee table was broken and had pieces coming off of it. In general, taking into account the overall condition of the property, if we were to buy a place like this, this one would be considered a fixer-upper. Not sure how the owner justifies the rate. But for a simple weekend get-away it did the job. Cool Cabins was great. We will use them again in the future, maybe just not this particular cabin.

When checking in the people were great. When we pulled up to the home it looked great. Then it all started. The stairs had not been shoveled. The hot tub was eight to ten inches low on water and could not be used. The home never would get warmer then 62. This should have all been taken care of before we arrived. This cabin had just been rented and they had a cleaning crew in there before we arrived. Which tells me they dont inspect these cabins! When I emailed Cool Cabins about my stay, the response was. You should have called, yes that is correct but we should not have had too. This should have been taken care of before we arrived. The only offered to us was 15% off our next stay. That will not happen!! It show that they do not inspect the Cabins but want to charge for cleaning and inspections. When you read the guest book other people have had the same issues with Heat!! Cool Cabins would not take reasonability.
