Los AngelesSuper place
Left on 10/27/2011 for a stay in October 2011
For 3 couples in their mid twenties, this was a great find. We had great crisp fall weather, beautiful views, decent amount of living space, cute kitchen, washer/dryer, grill, golf right around the corner, a jacuzzi, fireplace, wrap around porch. All in all it was pretty nice. Using my living social voucher was def a plus (saved some money). There were a few issues however- having trouble with some of the pilot lights on the stove, the jacuzzi never got got enough, had to have someone come out and fix it on the 2nd day (which they did.) the staircase coming from the driveway is long and steep, def not ideal for older people. The driveway was ridiculously steep and narrow and incredibly awkward to back up out of. Had some car issues on the last day. However none of this was enough to take away from our amazing time.

Left on 10/20/2011 for a stay in October 2011
when we first got to the vacation check-in we told the front desk we were on hold for like 30 mins, as we had called in prior to arrival, with a few questions so we did not have to spend that time while checking in - we were supposed to get a discount as an accommodation for holding so long...we didn't but I made sure to bring it up at check-out (discount was applied) okay so we are driving to the cabin...forever in the Pitch-black night!!! The address as wrong on the paper they gave us ;-( super tired from a long day and topped it off with 40mins of driving in circles; we figured it out and trekked up the stairs only to walk into what smelled like a decaying body...I had to run back outside to keep from vomiting - we opened all the windows, covered our noses and ran upstairs to bed. woke up and the smell was just as bad...could not figure out what it could be , we are thinking dead animal in the house or under it! Finally after some sniffing around we realized it was the garbage disposal...So nasty!! of course it was broken but thank God we knew about the reset button and thank god it worked!! Smell quickly dissipated and we were free to enjoy the remainder of our stay. I feel it would have been a nice touch if they would have at least left a lil bundle of wood since we were not from the area and it was late. Couches had some dog hair so I did not sit down but no big I guess, there was a table. I liked there were some playing cards and Jenga...games are a nice touch! Loved that the hot tub was warm and we did not have to wait to heat it. Central air worked really well and the place was very clean (especially the bathrooms!!). I will come back to Big Bear and rent a cabin but I may not use this rental company...the address thing really burned me (sorry, just being honest)

to begin with, the sloped driveway(almost 60%)was very hard to climb. we did not have any elderly ,mostly average age about 40. the reason is that the asphalt was deteriorating so bad, that we walked on gravel and rocks and we had to hold on to the car's side mirrors not to fall down. my daughter 25years old slipped twice on her back.
It was almost 90 degrees in the unit.there is no a/c in most homes in Big Bear, that is what the realty said when I booked the unit-just open the windows. well we did open the windows but most of them were missing the screens,so the choice was between being beaten by mosquitoes or sweating all night long. there are no fans in the unit.when we finally fell asleep we had to awake up at 4:30 am because we did not have any shades on the masterbedroom window, the shade was in the closet.the upstairs tub is cracked.
In the morning when we went to fix some breakfast, there was one pot in the cupboard ,one frying pan -both of which -the teflon lining in them was long gone.no kettle to boil water. I dropped everything and went to buy a set of pots and pans. we were so disgusted with what the unit furnished with.
as far as cleanliness, spider webs everywhere and in every room. you cant even hang your clothes because the rods in the closets are not mounted. there was no sense in complaining because the list was endless,so we tried to stay out most of the day.
I own rental property in california so I know what is accepted by the the realty and by the tenant. If my property was in this units' condition ,there would not a be a realty that would agree to manage my property.
Sorry to come across like a complainer ,but I would not take this unit again even it would have been offered for free, nor would I use this Realty because they are cluless or just dont care.Needles to say we arrived very sleep deprived.

Disappointed renter
La Verne, CASpring break
Left on 03/30/2011 for a stay in March 2011
We rent a cabin (8 family members) every year at this time through Big Bear vacations. This year we were very disappointed especially since we spent more to upgrade our rental ($1,300.00). This cabin looks great in the pictures on the web site and would be much better in the summer months. There was significant snowfall and the cabin is located high up. The drive-way was not plowed so there wasn't anywhere to park, we called the management company and they allowed us to park (overnight only) across the street at another rental companys cabin. But we still had to hike up the unplowed drive-way up and then up an additional 2 flights of stairs that was deep in snow with ice chests, food and snow gear. The management company finally sent someone to plow our driveway but they job was not done all the way so we were still unable to park. The next door neighbor (owner) was also upset. My daughter and myself both took a couple of hard falls on the icey stairs. Needless to say it would've been greatly appreciated if at check-in the management company would've suggested another cabin due to the high volume of snow or at least given us the option to. The cabin itself is really cute however, it's in need of some TLC, I hope the owners are aware that the fireplace flashing leaks when it rains/snows, the stair banisters are loose, the roof leaks in the kitchen into the light fixtures. The couches were covered in pet fur so we covered them with blankets so we wouldn't itch when we sat on them. I could continue but do not want to sound like a complainer... My advise to anyone considering renting this cabin, drive by it first and inspect it before renting it on-line. Next year we will consider using a different rental company due to the lack of interest shown to us during this venture. :(

The comments about the icey driveway are no joke. The pavement is cracked at the steepest part which causes a layer of black ice to build up about 2" thick. It's fun spinning tire to get up the driveway but scary coming down as you begin to slide sideways. Definitely needs work. Luckily we were able to park in the Bear Mountain overflow lot about a 1/2 mile away.
Aside from that though the place isn't bad for the price. Beds are pretty old and sunken in. The foldout downstairs is unbearable and when we got there the digital cable had been shutoff although the basic worked. The hot tub worked well though and the wrap around deck plus dog friendliness earned this place some value points.
If you're looking for luxury you won't find it here but it's a cozy spot in an excellent location for snowboarding that will sleep a lot of people for a semi-reasonable price. -

Los Angeles, CAGreat Location, but Don't Expect a Super Clean Pad
Left on 02/02/2011 for a stay in January 2011
Location wise this place was pretty awesome if you are a snowboarder, walking distrance to Bear Mountain, no joke, you literally walk there and walk onto one of the runs, pretty sweet.
The house furniture, kitchen, and appliances are somewhat old, not the newest stuff. Everything worked fine though. The house wasn't cleaned at all when we got there, had some stained sheets and stuff (u'd get disgusted if you are a clean freak, but for a bunch of guys, we really didn't care much).
The jacuzzi works and keeps the water nice and warm!!! We loved it. Some houses have jacuzzi's, but they dont work, good things was this houses jacuzzi worked nice and dandy. -

San DiegoCabin fun in the mountains
Left on 11/11/2010 for a stay in October 2010
8 of us went up there for Halloween weekend. Everyone was very happy with the cabin and it's location.Nestled in the hills just outside of the valley, but not too far away. Great location for skiing in the winter. We found a great hiking trail not far down the road. The place gives you a real cabin feel and look. The big porch offers a great view and is perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the crisp mountain air. We had a hot fire going in the fire place all weekend, it puts off a surprising amount of heat. The hot tub was good, never seemed to get super hot and there was too much chlorine in the water. But i was getting nice and toasty in there every night. When we got there the fridge wasn't getting cold. Called management company, they sent someone right over. Seems you can't set temp to 10 at higher altitude. The porch swing was busted and unable to be used. The propane grill had an empty tank attached to it, you need a pair of pliers or wrench to undo, which no one had. Kitchen is barley stocked with pots and pans. We cooked the whole weekend and were able to make due with what was there. Other than those few minor things cabin was great. I could see how the driveway would be a problem with a bunch of snow, it's pretty steep. All in all i give this place a 4 out of 5. We all were very pleased with it and are looking forward to going back there again.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I will notify the owner about the porch swing and the limited supply of pots and pans and will try to get both issues resolved quickly. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to your next visit with us.

Very nice house. Slight obstructed view. Fantastic deck. Only problem, it could have been a little bit more clean. We found dead spiders in the bath tub on the 2nd floor and the place was a little dusty. Otherwise, this was a very nice home to rent have a weekend get-away with friends.

Love the accomadations to this cabin, it was real nice views, very comfy. I would recommend fixing the Jacuzzi just a bit and the only con is the parking up hilll and the stairs, it just made me realize im either out of shape or they are just too many stairs and steep.

Southern CaliforniaGood for a weekend with the guys, but in need some repairs
Left on 05/13/2010 for a stay in May 2010
The driveway was short but had a very steep incline
and had loose gravel, so we either had to have
momentum or we had to spin our tires up it. The
driveway had many scars from previous cars scraping
it. The second thing is that when we came to the
door it was open about six inches... it seemed like
the start of a horror movie. But the cabin was nice
inside and slept 7 guys easily, the wrap around
deck and jacuzzi was very nice and there was also a
gas and a coal grill. The odd thing to me was that
beer bottle tops could be found very easily outside
and there were broken compact florescent light bulb
bases on the floor of the deck. The jacuzzi was not
very clean and had no lock on it. There is a porch
swing on the side of the house that is broken.
The cabin had a washer and dryer, the TV was medium
to small in size, is a very short distance away
from Bear Mountain, has a beautiful view in the
morning. And the stairs are a bit steep, luckily
there was no ice. -

The BB Vacations staff were all very courteous and helpful. The one exception
was that when we asked for help getting the internet to work, we were told
that they'd call back and that didn't happen. The best things I can say about
the house is that the beds were comfortable and that the spa and yard were
nice. Negatives include lack of cell phone reception or internet service, an
extremely poorly equipped kitchen (not even any pot holders!), not enough
chairs at the dining room table. There was broken furniture in the closets and
towel bars and handles coming off walls and cabinets. The place seemed like it
had been used very hard. The treacherous driveway and steps leading to the
cabin were full of ice and it was difficult to park cars in the driveway. Because
of these issues we chose to leave after one night.Response from Big Bear Vacations - 01/28/2010

Big Bear Vacations has no control over cell phone reception. It is up to owners to decide whether or not to equip their homes with internet. This specific property is eqipped with a high speed ethernet connection (a cord is required). The lack of pot holders and minor damages such as broken towel racks and handles for cabinets etc. will be assesed with Big Bear Vacations maintenance department and the owner. Thank you for your review and we hope to see you in Big Bear again soon.

We had a group of 7 people ages 21-24. Checking in was fast and easy but they forgot to give us a welcome packet that we found out about after we left. The driveway was too steep and slippery for our vehicles. We had 3 vehicles and could only manage to fit 2 cars. It was tough getting one car up the top of the driveway since it was icy. We were able to share parking with our neighbors. There were a lot of stairs but it was no problem for any of us. We enjoyed the view. The cabin was really nice. It felt like a real genuine cozy cabin. The jacuzzi was awesome and we had no problems with it. Everything you needed was there. The power went out once, but we were able to get it back up and running after we found the box which was no problem. Everything was clean and working. The cabin was a walk away from big bear ski resort. We went snowboarding and had an awesome time!

San Diego, CAGreat cabin!
Left on 01/06/2010 for a stay in December 2009
This is a great cabin in on such a great quiet street in the Moonridge area. It is less than a half mile from Bear Mountain, so dropping off my boys and husband for snowboarding took less than 5 minutes! The house has three bedrooms, with a really good kids room. The double bed bottom of the bunk slept my 2 youngest and my 13 year old slept on the top bunk, that room has a TV and DVD player that kept them busy when everyone else wanted some quiet time downstairs.
The fireplace and jacuzzi were great and the kitchen is well equipped with a new fridge, dishwasher and microwave. The stove is a bit dated and didn't heat as evenly as we would have liked but it was functional. The two full bathrooms were great to have for our group, which was my family of five and then my sister and her husband. They ended up having their own bathroom which was nice for them.
The backyard was fun for "dodge the trees" sledding. There was about 8 inches of snow on the ground while we were there and the kids had a blast. The cabin is dog friendly which was nice. Overall we had a wonderful stay. The driveway is hard to park 2 cars on because it is steep, so we kept one car at the bottom of the driveway and that worked out ok.

This cabin was very cozy. Nice cabin feel. I agree with another review that mentioned the drive way issue. The drive way was very steep and icy. Very hard to fit three SUV vehicles. We ended up asking for another cabin, because the upstairs shower was out of order. The management company was able to accomadate us at another cabin with comprable amenities.

Los Angeles, CACozy home - TERRIBLE Management
Left on 01/08/2009 for a stay in January 2009
This was a really cozy, charming home that made for a nice New
Year's 4-day getaway for 6 friends. It was great for relaxing,
playing games, sledding (in the back) and getting the overall feeling
that we escaped from the city.
However, our positive experience came despite some of the
challenges of dealing with this management company. We detailed
these challenges/complaints in a memo to Big Bear Vacations when
we checked out... and, 6 days later, I'm still waiting for a call from
them.
Without further ado, here's the list of things to be aware of when
renting this property:
- Even though it was THE reason we picked the house, the hot tub
never worked the whole time. A repairman came by, but he didn't
return when he said he would and, even though he said it was fixed
for our final night, the temperature never rose above lukewarm.
- The driveway and very steep stairs were absolutely treacherous
when we arrived. Very, very dangerous! Of course, no one can fully
prepare for ice, but there was no salt provided and the only tool we
had to avoid disaster or injury was a flimsy, broken plastic shovel.
- The propane & charcoal BBQs were either inoperable, buried in
snow or absolutely filthy. A working BBQ was another reason why
we took this place (and why we spent plenty of money on steaks,
burgers, etc.).
- There was a massive leak in the kitchen. When someone took a
shower in the upstairs bathroom, the water would drip down onto
the stove... which made for a challenge as some of us cooked
dinner and others cleaned up for dinner.
- There were a few pieces of broken furniture, including dining
room chairs.
- No remote control for the upstairs TV and, unless you're 7-feet
tall, you won't be able to turn it on.
- There was trash left over by previous tenants.
- We were provided with 2 rolls of toilet paper and, really, nothing
else.
- The management company did not provide us with the "universal
key" for the place - which unlocks some of the padlocks and the
hot tub - and, despite it being their mistake, would not bring it to
us. We had to pick it up from them.
- We were told that there was no chance of a late check-out
because it was booked for our final night (the internet says
different). When we went to address our concerns to a manager at
the mandated 11am check-out, we were told that he wouldn't be in
for another hour. Very tricky, Big Bear Vacations, very tricky.
- Finally, despite this list of concerns - which points to their
unwillingness to fully manage their property and their lack of
concern with their tenants' well-being - NO ONE has called me to
make any amends.
Big Bear Vacations holds their tenants to very high standards (filling
out scores of paperwork, obeying pages of rules, paying far in
advance), it's just too bad they don't hold their properties to the
same standards.
Lovely place, Extremely disappointing management. -

Great cozy property to stay at. Very close proximity to Big Bear - which was convenient, and liked the fact it's close to the slopes.
You will need to make sure you have basic amenities...spices, paper towels, aluminum foil, and maybe even extra towels.
Would definitely consider staying there again in the future. -

San Diego, CALog Cabin Retreat: Comfy and Cozy
Left on 11/19/2008 for a stay in November 2008
Lovely log cabin in quiet Mooonridge area- can almost see
the lake from the house. Stayed for 3 nights- 4 adults and
one child. Comfortable beds and living area, central heating
and lovely hot showers. Can walk to the Moonridge
Zoo/Animal Park and Skiing. Kids room is lovely; our 3yr old
loved it and wants to go back to the 'wood house'.
Customer service was good- an electric circuit tripped out
and was fixed very quickly.
Only negative: parking was up a v. short v. steep drive (tricky
parking a car- easier with a SUV) and lots of steps up to the
house. Also there are only 4 dining chairs at the table.
Otherwise everything was great- looks like the pictures.
Tips: take flash lights- we had a power cut in the middle of
the night due to stormy weather, power was restored before
the morning. Bath towels are very basic hotel-like- I'd take
my own next time.
Big Bear Lake is a lovely area- recommend going to the Zoo
and the Discover Center. The Old Country Inn on Big Bear
Blvd for lunch was excellent -lots of choice, good prices,
good beer selection and very kid friendly. Can't wait to go
again and will use Big Bear Vacation Rentals again. -

Los Angeles, CaliforniaGreat Cabin
Left on 11/02/2008 for a stay in October 2008
Sometimes a rental does not include all the items that are listed in the ad.
In reference to the cabin, we loved it. It was very clean and well put together. We enjoyed the cabin, it was cozy and the jacuzzi was very clean. We would actually stay there again if a few things were in order. Here are a couple of the items.
When we went to the office to question some of the problems we had, most of the office staff was rude and arrogant. For example, for a week stay there was only two rolls of towlet paper. When we asked about that, the front desk woman got very angry as though it was such an inconvience for her. You would think that for $200 a night they could give us a couple more rolls. They didn't even supply a roll of paper towels.
The BBQ's that they listed were dirty and ancient, then after we arrived we realized that we needed to supply our own propane or coals (of course they forgot to put that in the ad or tell us at the office). Some of the pans in the kitchen were old and not usable. And of course, the internet nerve worked the entire time.
There was one woman in the office who was nice and helped us when we had an issue with the jacuzzi, and the problem was corrected right away. But if a company is going to rent a property and act as though they are "high-end" then they should rise to the occasion. If we had known that we needed to practically bring everything in our kitchen then they should list that in their rental info PRIOR to someone driving over 3 hours to get to a place they think has proper accomidations.

Can't say the same for the property management company though. When we checked in the stove didn't work. We called immediately but they never did come out to repair. Also, we rented the cabin because my wife needed the internet for work. Unfortunately, the internet connection was down. A repair man came out but it turned out he was a plumber and couldn't help. We ended up having to go to Starbucks for most of the day.
Big Bear was great though. I'd certainly encourage people to come for a visit. Just consider going through another management firm. -

A great get away

This was a very Clean cabin. It had all you needed. The Jacuzzi was fantastic and the Mountains right in the back yard was great for the kids. The deck on the side and in the front were great for sitting in the morning with your coffe. The only issue I had with this home were the stairs and the fireplace. The stairs were very dangerous at winter, with the ice formed on each step, and very difficult to remove. The fireplace was in a very strange postion in the living room, which made it difficult to enjoy it. Overall we enjoyed this rental very much, but not sure that we would rent it again. We go to Big Bear every Christmas.

Thank you for your review on Log Cabin Retreat. We understand stairs can become very slippery in winter with snow melt. We will suggest to the owner that he provide salt/snow melt for use as needed.
