Thank you for responding to our survey. We are sorry you were let into a property that hadn't been yet cleaned. There was a micommunitcation between the office and housekeeping. We do have an on-site housekeeping service that is available for issues encountered during a guest stay. We have checked the heater and is working. We will try to make it clearer how to operate the heater. Again, thank you for replying to our survey.

Myself and a group of friends enjoyed the cabin, it was open loft style for the bedrooms, not what we expected but it was cool, and we made the best of it. Close walk to the lake which was nice. Would come back again.

Los Angeles, CADefinitely a Great Deal for the Price--but lots of bugs!!!
Left on 10/05/2011 for a stay in October 2011
We only stayed in this cabin one night ((it's definitely great for a weekend or extended stay)), but we loved it. The pictures do it no justice, and it's super big! The two bedrooms are loft bedrooms ((it's hard to tell that from the pictures)), and admittedly the beds are not the most comfortable in the world...but they do the trick, and it's a great "camping" cabin! While we were there though ((besides sleeping time we only spent about 2 hours there)) there were tons of bugs--a brown recluse spider was first, followed by tons of other spiders crawling out of the couch and in the bathroom--and an earwig in one of the beds! Overall it was great but the bugs definitely irked us--which is why we went straight to sleep! :)
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 03/15/2012

Thank you for responding to our survey. We will make sure we check the furniture and make sure insects and arachnids are at the cabin. Big Bear is surrounded by a Natinal Forest and has many trees and as well as natural foliage in and about our homes. These are the calling card for all types of critters. Again, thank you for responding to our survey.

we stayed with big bear cabins over the weekend, it was suppose to be a 2 night stay, but instead we could not spend another moment in the cabin #166 called the sportsman.spider webs all inside the cabin furniture all broken and ripped the T V was like a monitor size 13" tv where have you ever heard of a 13" TV. no fan or air conditioning inside the cabin so it was like 90 inside the cabin i would not recommend anyone to rent this cabin for not even a night.take your money and your comfort to a nice hotel, and it will be even cheaper.do not get scammed by the pictures inside the ad.

Left on 06/25/2011 for a stay in June 2011
The double bed was rock hard, felt as if it was bought when the cabin was built. The diningroom ceiling was cracked and moved when someone walked in the bedroom above the diningroom, thought it might cave at anytime. The back door was broke. The top of the door on the door knob side could be pulled away from the jam a good three inches. The blinds were broke and do not close which means no privacy. One diningroom chair rocked, could break at anytime. We were given 3 towels and 1 roll of toilet paper for 6 people for 3 days. There was a coffee maker, but no coffee pot. The brown chair was ripped in several places. The love seat had a hole in the arm. The tub does not plug. The bathroom sink did not drain well. We were to stay three nights, but left one night early due to the inconveniences. We was very disappointed. The cabin is also not child friendly for toddlers. The stairs are very steep. I feel this should be mentioned in the description of the cabin. My granddaughter who is 2 1/2 was with us. It made me very nervous having her around the stairs.

orange countyRustic cabin, dangerous for kids!
Left on 09/22/2010 for a stay in September 2010
The cabin has a spacious first level with lofts upstairs. The stairs are steep and slippery. Wife slipped twice on narrow worn steps, 3 year old suffered foot wound on carpet nails sticking up through old worn carpet on stairs. The railing is also dangerous. The middle "rail" is an old boat oar and kids can slip right through. Also has a noisy water heater. Upstairs loft was very cold as drafts descend right on your head from uninsulated roof. This despite the fact that weather was great (80 degrees during daytime).
Location is quiet. No direct lake access. Would not stay here again.Response from Big Bear Vacations - 10/29/2010
Manager
Thank you for responding to our survey. We will definately check the stari carpet for nails. This unit is one of our most affordable houses. it is older and that is the reason for its pricing. We are sorry the railing was not to your expectation. All of our home are inspected by the City and must meet the building codes that existed at the time of construction. We hope you had some fun while in Big Bear.

The cabin we booked was not what we were expecting. There was one less room than what I was told over the phone, the kayake launch was not right outside the cabin. There was a bird issue in the front lawn but it was taken care of within two hours after I called. This is the second cabin we have had problems with with your agency. The first has fleas in the bed.

My six friends and I really enjoyed the rental.
The beds were pretty comfortable, there was enough room for seven, and the TV worked for when we were relaxing.
The only downsides were, the fireplace wasn't working correctly so we couldn't get it to turn on. There is also no access to a hot tub in the winter.
Other than that it was great, and I recommend the cabin to others. Great value! -

Left on 01/13/2010 for a stay in January 2010
we rented this cabin for one night, and that was too long. Lucky it was just 4 guys who arrived at night, because the cabin is in terrible shape. the kitchen is gross, the tv is 20 years old, the beds are like cots with springs, I'm just lucky I brought a sleeping bag so I didn't have to touch the bedding. The rental place was nice to come out quickly and figure out how to fix the odd appliance fireplace and get the heater working. this cabin is in such bad shape, I'm just glad there wasn't a woman staying there. Did I mention the nails sticking out of the carpet?

This house was fairly clean. The tub was either stained or not clean. there was a lot of spider web, it looks like nobody's been staying there for a while. Some bedding clothe were stained. The carpet need some work it has quite some nails sticking out. The shower wasn't running. It is a cozy little house but it needs some maintenence. My expectation were a little too high, so it was disappointing at first.

This is
the first time that we stayed in a vacation rental home instead of a hotel -- and it was perfect. The
house was closer to the beach than we even planned, just a short walk down the road, and it made
it easy to bring the kids and all our gear. The manager had already sent us the keys in the mail, so
we just drove right to the house. Everything was in order when we arrived, and we were pleased to
learn that the pictures online matched the home -

We went up for the weekend just to get away with my 2 year old
daughter. We stayed at Sportsman 166 and it was adorable. It
was right by the lake you have the best view on both sides. Also
you can use Shore Acres Lodge to go fishing which is the prime
l;location even for the locals. The only part I didn't like are the
bedrooms if you have younger children just be very careful they
are lofts with very steep stairs and it could be dangerous. There
are beds downstairs too so that were we stayed. -

Had an awesome time just what we needed to get away for a couple days. It was quiet and peaceful. The Big bear Agent gave us a great deal and helped me find this place. Coolest part was that it was just accross the way from a cabin I stayed at 18 yrs ago w/ my family and I was hoping that I might see it and I did. Watch out for the cobb webs though when you first check-in, and be careful walking around barefoot the edges of the carpet might poke your feet.

Southern California"Rustic" Cabin
Left on 09/15/2008 for a stay in September 2008
Well - I now see the details listed above for this particular cabin, however, I started my search online and was a little overwhelmed by all the different areas/neighborhoods. So I thought it would be best to call to inquire about a reservation and get feedback from a live person. I never actually saw that description online, nor pictures, nor was it described that way over the phone to me. So when I called in, I told the gal we wanted to be in Big Bear close to the lake and that it was just my husband and I and our dog. She directed us to this "great little cabin" at the bargain price of $384 for 2 nights (later I called back and someone was kind enough to discount it to $329). In any event, there was no mention that there were no doors on the "two" bedrooms (personally - if there aren't doors, which translates to NO privacy, I wouldn't label it as "two" bedrooms...I can't tell you how upset I would've been if we had invited another couple to join us thinking there were two full bedrooms and found this...). Nor were we told upfront that we were responsible for hauling our own garbage off the property. I suppose that wasn't that big of a deal, but personally if I'm paying that much to stay somewhere, I expect that the maid service that comes in to clean up after we leave would also deal with any garbage... There were some ants scrambling about the kitchen when we got there and cobwebs in the upstairs rooms... Also - we are fortunate to be smaller sized people, however, I could see someone that is on the larger side not being able to comfortably get up and down the stair case as it is EXTREMELY narrow - seriously, like I bumped my hips going up and I'm only a size 6 - 8. Overall - it ended up working out fine for us. It was a place to sleep, it did have a full kitchen, it was right across the street from the lake, but it just became sort of the joke of our little getaway. I wish a more realistic description had been provided over the phone so we could've made an informed decision. For the price of this place, it was definitely not what I expected... And as for it sleeping 7 people - 7 adults in that place would've been too much in my opinion. I would like to say though - the gals at Big Bear Vacations (I think that was the name of the agency that rented it) were soooo nice! They were very helpful and kind upon our arrival and check-out and very informative.
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 09/29/2008

Thank you for your response to Sportsman Unit 166. We verified the description states the bedrooms are loft bedroom with no doors. We are sorry that was not clear to you. We include the information regarding trash removal in our check-in paper work that is required to be given to the guest. We need to have the trash removed by the guest in that the local fauna has a tendancy to break open trash bags and either flyoff with trash or drag trash all over a neighborhood. We are sorry this caused you any inconvenience. Are cabins have star ratings to help clients determine what type of cabin they are staying in. This cabin is rated as a 1 star. We hope you will stay with us again. We have many cabins to choose from.

sportsman rental home review
Left on 08/30/2008 for a stay in August 2008
Found Sportsman rental home through Shore Acres Lodge, which
was full the night we needed. Found Shore Acres Lodge in book
"Southern California Cabins & Cottages"-one of Foghorn Outdoors
publications.
My two children really enjoyed the pool on our stay of 8/23/08.
The Sportsman home itself was very comfortable, however it was
lacking any kitchen towels or paper towels.
The 5th step going upstairs had carpet nails uncovered, my son
nicked his toe on it.
I was very disappointed upon checking in to find that the woman
that booked me over the phone had charged my credit card! She
had promised that she would hold the Sportsman with the card.
The young man that handled my check-in apologized and said he
would take the charge off the card. I paid in cash which was my
intention from the beginning. The charge has appeared on my bill
now, and the credit card company said that it hadn't posted yet.
Please make sure that your staff honors their word. How could I
have misunderstood her?

Thank you for your response to Sportsman Unit 166. Our Housekeeping staff is instructed to put 2 kitchen drying towels in each unit. We are sorry none were in your unit. We have an on-site housekeeping department that gives access to towel exchanges or additions. We don't supply paper towels but will take this into consideration for our future policies. We always charge a credit card upon booking. Upon arrival we can take cash and reverse the charge. We are sorry for the misunderstanding. Again, thank you for replying to the review inquiry.

This little cottage was a perfect getaway for my husband and I. Rustic inside, it has its little quirks. You must not forget to step up when you're walking out of the kitchen into the dining room, otherwise you'll trip over the 3" step up. You have two different views of the lake from the deck. Towards the front of the house is the main body of water. Towards the back is a cove that you can fish or swim in. The downfall is that you do not have access to the cove. Or at least not unless the property owners from the house behind are home. If the gate is locked, you cannot pass through. All-in-all, it is a nice little place.

Thank your for your response to Sportsman Unit 166. This is an older house and like other older homes has it quirks. Shore Acres Lodge is walking distance form this unit wich will give you lake access. Unfortunately one cannot enter the lake through private property. This unit is advertized a "lake views" because of this. We hope this didn't cause too much inconvenience. Again, thank you for responding to our survey and hope you come visit us again.

great cabin but don't go for the gas cards! I had an awful experiece in requesting the gas card as advertised on the web site and tv. Rude behavior, ending up with 2 $25 gas cards being thrown down on a desk. They should not promote 'specials' such as gas cards if they don't want to give them out. Otherwise, Big Bear is a great place to stay. Mrs. Q

Great location! But needs help
Left on 07/07/2008 for a stay in May 2008
We had rented this house for 3 days. It was for myself, my husband
and my daughter. I was actually very unsatisfied with this home. There
was a water leak in the bathroom, which caused mold on the walls.
This leak was so bad that we were always stepping in water since their
was only 1 bathroom. The cable TV did also not work. It was not
turned on. This home was expensive. I didn't mind paying but there is
no way that house should have been rented. Sincerely, Kendall HodgesResponse from Big Bear Vacations - 07/19/2008

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Sportsman. We apologize if this house did not meet the expectations you had for your stay. The leak in the bathroom has been fixed. If at anytime during your stay something is broken, our maintenence department is one phone call away. The cable has also been repaired.

it is a beautiful view from the cabin at low price, but it needs to replace carpet, kitchen and bathroom.

Thank you for your response to Unit 166, Sportsman. The carpet was replaced last year. This unit is priced to reflect its built date. The unit has its original kitchen and bathroom. Again, thank you for your response to our survey.
