garden grove, caGreat place! Why 3 stars?
Left on 01/28/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My husband, my 4 year old, my dog and myself all stayed in this cabin for 2 nights over the weekend. We had a groupon for the stay even though the price for the cabin was good, the price for the cleaning was outrageous. Especially when you had to sign an agreement that you had to clean the cabin yourself before you left or you would be charged extra. Whats the cleaning fee for when you have to do all of the work yourself? The only other problem was the bed... I think its time to get a new one. Besides that the location was great and the cabin was very cute! We would definitely rent at this location again, but maybe in a larger cabin.

It's great to know you had such a great time with your family in Little Pines. While there is a cleaning fee, the only things you are asked to do is clean your dishes and take your trash to one of Big Bear's free trash sites. House Keeping takes care of everything else. Once again, we're so happy to know you enjoyed your stay and can't wait to help you plan your next vacation in Big Bear!

Left on 01/14/2012 for a stay in December 2011
This cabin is next to the trash!!! The ceiling in the living room is damaged and falling. This cabin needs a remodel. Bathroom needs remodel. Deadbolt doesn't lock from outside easy to break into. Paid for cleaning and it wasn't clean. Cobwebs in bedroom...broken wine glass.. front porch dirty...pilot light was out and it smelled like gas..no hot water in shower. Charged a late check in. I was on hold for over half hour trying to reach them.

LAGood but pricey
Left on 12/29/2011 for a stay in December 2011
- Too expensive for a single bedroom cabin with common facilities
- There is no explicit parking area for especially the cabins in the corners, so you have to park in front of the door.
- No Wifi or wired internet connection
- Up to additional $70 not included in the internet price
+ Near Lakeside view
+ Facilities are good and the room is clean.

The cabin was wonderful. We enjoyed the fireplace and nearness to town. Some weather stripping would help the drafts in the place...many large cracks around windows and front door. More lighting would be helpful (larger wattage lamps) especially over the table in the living room. Overall a very enjoyable time and it was quiet and peaceful.

Stayed there for Octoberfest! it was nice and cozy, small place that my partner and i stayed in with our dog. My partner and i loved the small kitchen and it was relatively closed to the civic center. Our dog loved smelling everything! it was warm and although we didnt build a fire it was nice to have a fireplace.

Left on 10/05/2011 for a stay in September 2011
I had made reservations for 3 nights. (9-26 thru 9-28) intending to fish for 3 days. The lumpy bed & traffic noise made sleeping difficult. The 25 mph winds & dirty water made the lake unfishable. I checked out on 9-27 am & was refused a refund of the unused 2 nights. Yes, I'm aware that's your policy...but not an equitable one. Hotels aren't allowed to charge for unused nights...how can you?? I would neither endorse nor return to your facility.

We are sorry you were not completely satisfied with your stay. According to the policy you signed it does state that if you decide to cancel you will forfeit the entire amount of the reservation. We are sorry you felt that those policies are unfair. Thank you for the feedback it is greatly appreciated to help us better serve our customers in the future.

Left on 09/29/2011 for a stay in September 2011
Specifically requested a cabin within walking distance to the village. Was told "15 minute" walk. Ended up more like, 25. And that was just to the Bowling Barn. Not to mention the walk is down a very dark and windy road, which I deemed too unsafe to trek. For the safety of your guests, please do not encourage this location as a suitable 'walking distance'.

We are very sorry to hear that you felt as though the cabin was too rustic, a lot of our customers return year after year to enjoy the location and rustic feel of this cabin. This is a 2 star cabin but we do have cabins that rate up to 5 star that may be more suitable to what your looking for. Thank you for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

We had a two night getaway - it was cozy, warm and everything we needed for a rustic woodsy experience. This is not a place for fussy, fancy folks. Real knotty pine everywhere, great wood burning fireplace, comfortable bed, just enough kitchen for the two of us and a great location - dog welcomed - just right!. Staff was extremely responsive and parking area was plowed for our convenience.

I really wanted to love the cabin. It was cute and quaint...perfect for the weekend get-away. But The bed was so bad, I had to see a chiropractor the next week. I specifically asked for a room with a comfy bed. The cabin I rented the night before was horrid. The customer service rep assured me this one was a winner. My date and I couldn't sleep all night. I will never rent from them again

Canyon Lake CAdisapointed
Left on 02/21/2011 for a stay in February 2011
This place and the compound it sits on has potential. Although quaint and by the lake it felt like we were staying at a deserted ghost town. Start with the cabin; The entire cabin was smaller than an average size hotel room. Website pics make it seem larger. While everything worked ie. sink, shower, hot water, stove, etc. I would rate the cleanliness a 2. The Bathroom "lanollium" is dirty and stained. (would not put my bear feet on it) The shower pan was globbed over and being held together with gobs of silicone caulking.(and black mold) the drain was protruding and pinched my big toe. The bedroom was clean but the queen sized bed was so uncomfortable i could hear the springs and feel them with every toss and turn. Hangind lamp wires taped together with black tape. For a few hundred dollars in upgrades ie. new shower and tile in the tiny 4ft x 3ft shower and not much bigger kitchen, a new bed and living room sofa this review would have been another star rating from me.
The grounds were dirty and unkept. There was a surprising ammount of trash on the grounds. We were told that since it's winter time, the pool and jaccuzi would not be in service. What we were'nt told was that the pool and jacuzzi areas would be covered in trash, piled up leaves and stacked up old faded 15 year old pool chairs and lounges.Cover them!! I was apolled at how badly kept these grounds were kept.
Checking in: The staff was friendly and professional. But, Not only did they make a photo copy of my credit card and id, they insisted on taking a hard (carbon) copy to keep on file after they verified my persons and ran my card!!! Not cool!!! Identity theft happens!!!
After paying $250 for a one Nite stay a late check out (1pm) cost me another $30 !!
Until big bear vacations takes time to care about renting out someone Else's cabin for profit.I would not recomend them to anyone.
Not a happy valentines day -

Needs major updating and cleaning. Carpet is disgusting and needs to be changed. Me and my wife found several spiders in the bathroom, which one spider was between the shower towels as I came out to dry my self. Location was not that bad, a bit far from the lake.

Dear Guest,
We are glad you enjoyed the location, and appologize that the cabin was not up to your standards. Little Pines #102, is part of our Shore Acres property. It is our longest standing property, that is meant to have a rustic and quaint charm, which is what many people search for when staying in the mountains. We are located in the heart of the San Bernardino National Forest, which means you are very likely to spot some of our wildlife. Sometimes, that includes the wolf spider, which finds shelter in homes during cold weather. They are a harmless little nuisance, that the Big Bear Vacations staff works tirelessly to keep out of our homes. In the spring and summer, when the weather is warmer, it is very rare that you will see one at all. Thank you for your input, it is through these reviews that we make strides to better serve you.

Poway, CAOur dog loves walking down to the lake everyday
Left on 09/01/2010 for a stay in August 2010
We have stayed twice at Shore acres Lodge. The first time in 2008 was in the Juniper 105 cabin. We like Little Pines 102 better. Better location, better floor plan, better front porch, and better view of lake. What we especially like about Shore acres the most is its proximity to the lake. We can walk to the lake--just a couple hundred feet--without ever leaving the lodge's grounds.
It's an older place but it has its charms. I understand it was originally built as a Gentlemen's Fishing Club in 1907 but was renovated in the 1960s to be a year-round lodge (see You Tube video of Huell Howser's visit to the lodge for the history).
We had to light one of the kitchen stove's pilot lights (it stayed lit for the rest of our stay). I wish more of the windows opened (painted shut). A couple of the window screens are bent (but no bugs got in). The front door's deadbolt lock doesn't work (but the doorknob lock does). I spent about an hour one day picking up the cigarette butts around our cabin (the policy of enforcing littering outside doesn't appear to be working very well).
We were there for the Monday night barbecue with live music. We enjoyed that also but noticed that many guests do not bring a dish to share. Even so, there was plenty of food. The music was rather loud, but they played songs that we enjoyed.
In spite of the items listed above, we still love the lodge and will stay there again. It's all about location for us. And, our dog loves walking down to the lake everyday, sometimes several times a day.Response from Big Bear Vacations - 10/27/2010
Manager
Thank you for responding to our survey. We have the screens redone at the start of each spring. They don't always make it through the summer. Most of the windows at Shore Acres slide into the wall-we are sorry yours was painted shut. We hope you had a nice time while in Big Bear.

The cabin was perfect location on the water. But the floors were slooping so in the bedroom the head of the bed was lower than the foot. The toilet kept backing up for no apparent reason. And when we got there - the floors were dirty. I realize it was an old cabin- and with that comes some issues - but some can be fixed.
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 10/27/2010

Thank you for responding to our survey. this cabin has a large pin tree near the front door that drips sap onto the deck and gets tracked into the unit. We are considering putting a hard floor down instead of carpet during the spring. Again, thank you for replying to our survey.

Left on 07/14/2010 for a stay in July 2010
Big Bear Vacations made the reservation and check in painless. However the cabin was in horrible condition. Smelled like sweat, floors were filthy, windows wouldn't open couldn't air out the horrible smell. Shower would only drain on one side the water sat on the other. The front door curtain was hanging off of the door. I found the other piece of the curtain rod outside on the ground and fixed that. Honestly, the only good part about the weekend was being close to the water. I spent way too much money for that cabin. Coming up next month to the same place (different cabin number) may have to cancel in fear of experiencing the same thing.

We are very sorry to hear about your last experience. We boast a 24 hour maintenance department equipped to handle anything you do not like about the cabin. We hope to be better prepared for your upcoming reservation and that it won't disappoint you like the last one did. Please let us know if anything is not to your standard and we will send someone out right away to do a walk thru with you in your cabin.

kitchen supplies such as silverware and cooking utensils.
The area around the cabin was in unacceptable condition, i.e., The area close to the unit was

Thank you for your response to our survey. Big Bear had a long and late winter this year. This property is on the lake so all all the snow melt goes into the lake throught the property. Any where there is no slope water accumulates. We are usually done with mud in March and April but not this year. The ruts have been filled in all all the mud is gone. Again thank you for replying to our survey.

When we arrived at the place, first thing we noticed is the smell of gas. I looked around to see if there is anything I can fix but none. I called the after-hours number a few times and no one called back. With all the windows and doors closed, it made us dizzy and light-headed. If I open the windows or door, it is extremely cold as the outside temp is in the negative. The heater BARELY works or heat up. No one came or called till 11am the following day.

Left on 02/02/2010 for a stay in January 2010
when I arrived, there was smell of GAS in the cabin which was cause by Pilot light on the stove which I resolved by lighting the pilot light. Also carpet was not cleaned/vacummed prior to our arrival (lots of debris from outside). Also had little less then half of toliet paper and no trash can in the kitchen which I had to go outside to throw away the trash. :-( I've stayed at little pine year ago and was happy but second time around was terrible. Reason I booked the cabin was because Big Bear Vacation offered somewhat good deal but it was not worth it after arriving. I prefer to stay at Golden Bear Cottage from now on. Unless things change, I will not come back to Big Bear Vacation. ;-(

Left on 10/21/2009 for a stay in October 2009
I must say, my husband has a bad back, but I have never seen him sleep so
poorly or be so uncomfortable walking around during the day in my life! The
linens were clean, but the mattress was like sleeping on sheet rock and the
comforter smelled old. There was mold on the walls in the bathroom with no
shelf in the shower to place toiletries, etc. Also, the carpet throughout had
stains and was not vacuumed prior to us checking in and the entire cabin
smelled old and moldy, not pleasant! We came there to have a "romantic"
weekend together, but in the end, never once had any "romantic encounters"
because of the way the cabin grossed us out! We come out to Big Bear 2-3
times per year and have never had anything poor to say about any of the
places we've stayed, except this one. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! -

We have two dogs so the lake side location was perfect us & for the dogs to run around. Shore Acres Lodge is very dog friendly, there were a bunch of dogs around in various cabins which was fun. Unfortunately what we did not know was when I went to check in I was told there is an additional fee of $10 per night per dog. While I realize that the fee is not too expensive, when you are trying to stay within a budget, to find out last minute about an additional fee is ridiculous and it all adds up. Especially to find out about the fee during check in when you think you have already "paid in full" over the internet.
I did ask to speak to the manager while checking in when I found out about the fee, only to find out that the man checking me in was the manager who gave me some poor excuse, "it's noted on the website, it's just not added into your total on the website." Maybe I'm crazy but I guess I think "paid in full" means exactly that & not that I am going to have to fork out additional money when I check in.
The cabin we stayed in was adorable. Very rustic with that "big bear" charm. We chose one of the smaller cabins as it was one of the least expensive. I say "least expensive" however the price is still quite high for what you are getting. You can stay in a very nice hotel elsewhere for the cost you are paying for this cabin. Our TV did not work, we needed to call maintenance. Our very first flush of the toilet bowl stopped it up & overflowed the toilet bowl water into the bathroom. When I went to the office to get more towels & explain our toilet bowl overflowed, the lady in the office did not offer to send anyone to help us clean up or fix the toilet bowl.
I honestly loved the cabin itself and the location. The pool was great as was the hot tub. However with the poor maintenance and more so the price and lack of interest of the staff, I would say take your money elsewhere.
