The Barnacle is located on the Atlantic Ocean on Long Beach Drive on the beautiful island of Big Pine Key. All rooms have a queen bed with private bath. Rooms are located in the main house. There is a one room cottage located in front of the house. It contains a kithcen area. If you are looking for privacy, the Blue Heron Cottage is your best choce.

Our room was never cleaned during a one week stay. Every wall needs to be cleaned and painted. The yellowed and curling wallpaper needs to be replaced. Every surface needs to be dusted or scrubbed. I made coffee early one morning and noticed overflowing trash beneath the sink, sticky counters and table tops in the food preparation area, caked-on crud beneath the leaky kitchen faucet, crumbs and gummy residue surrounding the coffee maker and hot water dispenser on the counter. A roach the size of my big thumb was waiting on me one morning. Our breakfast was frozen waffles with pre-packaged mixed fruit most days. The eggs were good, as they were the only thing made on the premises. I loved the whimsical decorating touches, but they are all that remains from previous managers who took the time to maintain and fix things. For this level of service, stay at a motel where you park in front of your room.

If you want tranquility, nature, great breakfast, star gazing and kayaking, this is for you. If you want a glitzy 5 star hotel, this is not for you. Accommodating hosts, real Keys flavor, great location to see the Keys.

My husband and I had a wonderful, quiet weekend at the Barnacle B & B this past weekend. We stayed in the Ocean room which has an ocean view and a small patio right on the beach. Our gourmet breakfast was as good as any you would expect at a 5 Star hotel. We especially enjoyed seeing all the wildlife including Key Deer, iguana, and a pod of dolphin swimming by. What more could we want? We will go back.
