      Great Glamping Experience!

Left on 04/10/2013 for a stay in September 2012

I love this place! We stayed in the airstream Safari and it was just as adorable as in the pictures! It felt very private and very quiet. We had a problem with the gas grill because it was not cooking our steak, but we called Caroline and they tried everything they could to fix it. We ended up cooking it on the stove.

One thing, I will say is that it’s easy to miss the entrance and the private roads are a little rocky and may be scary to drive them at night if you haven’t done it before. Caroline addresses this in the contract and says that you can call them and they will come meet you at the entrance to help.

Caroline, her husband and their sweet doggy were really great. This little place has everything that you need- salt/pepper/saran wrap- even tiny reusable ice cubes and portable lunch bag to pack for a hike. I really enjoyed my stay here. It was wonderful and I would love to come back!

      Big Sur at its best

Left on 02/21/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We had high hopes heading towards Big Sur and weren't disappointed!

Beside being a really cool person, Caroline has a fantastic setup of airstream glamping! The campers are all nestled on a mountain side, with gorgeous views. You really feel right in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas anywhere in the world.

The airstreams are all well-maintained and there are no bad surprises. I've been telling everyone about this place since we've been back and I promise you will too.

Great expectations but not a great experience.

Left on 01/29/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We found Big Sur Getaway on a “glamping” site listing glamour camping destinations around the world. Big Sur Getaway might be camping but it’s not glamorous. Don’t be fooled by the photos. What they don’t show are the owner’s house and a neighbor’s house bearing down in full view of the trailer. The trailer is parked at the end of a driveway to the neighbor’s. So there is not the sense of privacy as claimed.

Apparently there are also some kinks to be worked out with the business as the neighbors aren’t too keen on guests staying in the trailer parked on the property, particularly if they have dogs. If your idea of camping is parking an RV in someone’s driveway alla cousin Eddie visiting the Griswalds in Christmas Vacation or living in an RV parked in your in-laws’ yard after losing your home due to foreclosure then this place is for you.

The trailer is well appointed and adequately restored although more attention to detail is needed in keeping things in good working order. To be considered a luxury boutique experience more hotel services are needed. Guests are given only one set of towels and there is no interim cleaning or freshening of amenities during a stay. The grounds are not well maintained. There’s a large yard waste pile located next to the trailer. Hiking trails are overgrown and their use is not encouraged. Dogs may be allowed but they certainly aren’t welcome even if they are highly social, trained service dogs. They must be tied up at all times even while relaxing within the campsite in front of the trailer.

It’s hard to go wrong when visiting Big Sur but this is one place we would not recommend to our friends.

      Response from Caroline - 02/15/2013

      Caroline

      Owner

      Dear Future Guests,

Let me assure you, we love dogs! We have 2 dogs ourselves.
However, we have pet-friendly regulations in our rental contract, which are standard in any hospitality business! We do ask that "dogs need to be on the leash at all times."
This rule is also for the safety of your pets, as Big Sur features a variety of wild life.

(My guests had 2 German Shepherds with them that kept roaming around on our and the neighbor's property, who have children and cats.)

Big Sur Getaway is located on an 8-acre property which is the home to friendly permanent residents as well as vintage Airstream vacation rentals. Each Airstream is privately located. Thanks to the recommendations in this review, we are incorporating additional fencing around the AVION for more privacy.

We have put in years worth of hard work landscaping and maintaining the property. Each Airstream has a variety of native plants and trees as decorations. We are careful to maintain the property for the aesthetic but also to reduce fire hazard ("burn days" in Big Sur are limited, so brush piles often cannot be removed immediately).

We do not have any maintained hiking trails directly on our property although it does border Andrew Molera State Park.

As part of our eco-practices, our rental contract states that we do not have a daily maid service but you can certainly request complimentary towels or other amenities at any time if needed. If you are joining us for an extended stay (5+ days), our policy is to provide you with with a fresh set of linens.

We are here to meet your needs and making your Glamping trip a positive and comfortable experience! Looking forward to seeing you!

It's Never as Good as the Photos, right?

Left on 11/03/2012 for a stay in October 2012

Wrong. This is the special little gem is exactly what it looks like.
Our airstream bed was comfy and the mountain night quiet. The great sound system in the camper allowed us to enjoy the mountain moonlight by our own iPod soundtrack. There was just enough kitchen equipment to let us enjoy the bounty we picked up at the Monterey farmers markets. The hammock and outdoor lounge chairs are perfect for watching the moon come up over the mountains or warming by the fire. It is throughtfully appointed with everything you would probably need.
The owner was generally out of sight, but there in minutes on the one occasion we needed assistance with the gas grill.
Only concerns I could offer is that the road up the mountain could be a challenge for a those not comfortable with mountain back roads (we loved it!) and the bathroom shower is tiny for a tall guy-- as with most campers.
As for us, we can't wait to find a reason to get back to Big Sur and stay here again.
      Thank you Caroline!

...to which I will definitely return again and again. I stayed in Caroline's avion trailer for a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle in my life. It was a most wonderful experience.
Werner and Caroline were such gracious hosts, very accommodating and professional. While it's not super easy to find, my feeling was that this is a prerequisite to a perfect hideaway. I found the trailer clean, well equipped, and very comfortable. Thank you Caroline, for a most wonderful stay. I will come again very soon.

      The perfect proposal!

Left on 07/19/2012 for a stay in July 2012

My boyfriend (at the time) and I rented the airstream for our 5th anniversary. It is so quaint, just enough room and the decor is sheik and welcoming. The bed is really comfortable and it was wonderful that there were pots, pans, plates etc. there for us to use to make our own dinner. It isn't totally secluded but it didn't really matter once we were enjoying the trailer. It is in a great location to use as a base camp to explore Big Sur and even back to Monterey.

Caroline was amazing. She is so kind and a great host. She was very accommodating as I later learned she was in contact with my boyfriend, and sister to plan the perfect engagement proposal. She never let on to me that she knew the plan and I was taken by complete surprise. On July 4, 2012 in the airstream my amazing boyfriend got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was unforgettable! We can't wait to return for another anniversary!

Our stay was just perfect! I will never forget our visit to Big Sur and the airstream!

      Thank you Caroline!

Round two at Big Sur Getaway

Left on 07/18/2012 for a stay in June 2012

My boyfriend and I planned our second trip to the Big Sur Getaway after we had, what felt like, the trip of a lifetime for our first visit. This year, we opted to stay in the Vintage avion, while last year, we stayed in the studio. Both are great recommendations but come with two totally different experiences. While the studio had more amenities and was completely peaceful and quiet, the vintage avion felt more like glamping, and more like we were 'roughing' it...minus the 'rough', which we both really liked. :) I can't say enough great things about this place or Caroline and her husband. What we love about this place (and what will keep us coming back each and every year) is the true hospitality that Caroline and Werner provide. While they are more than accommodating, they are also big on letting their guests have their alone time, and they don't waste much time explaining a few things before they quickly retreat back into their home and disappear, unless you'd like to sit and have a drink with them (which we obviously did!). They are truly some of the sweetest people I have ever met, and if you've been here, you know that their combined creativity speaks for itself. I feel like I talk about this place to others on a bi-weekly basis...once you visit, you'll understand what all the big fuss is about. :)

      Mama Nature Knows The Cure

Left on 07/13/2012 for a stay in July 2012

This experience was one of the greatest I've had with Mother Nature so far. Caroline's genius accommodations were delightful, clean, comfortable, well-maintained, and with great aesthetic. The camper has everything you need and more, spacious shower, luxury bed, adorable original amenities plus high-end fridge, stove, and kitchen appliances. What better way to start your day in Big Sur than a cup of french press in the morning on the outside patio staring at the hundred-old cypress and redwoods that drape the mountains.

The camper is located on a gorgeous, secluded, and very wild property, a great walk up and down the hill (about 30 minutes total) if you want to get your morning and afternoon exercise. Just up the drive from The River Inn where we went and sat in the patio chairs inside the river.

Caroline is a great host as well and made sure we had everything we needed. Good people. Good vibes. The Earth is very receptive in an environment like this. Gratitude.

      Delightfully quirky and peaceful stay

Left on 07/09/2012 for a stay in September 2011

We stayed in the avion for Labor Day weekend last year and couldn't have been more pleased. My husband has his own vintage airstream that is in early stages of renovation, so there was an obvious draw for us. Even without a prior interest, however, this place is lovely. The trailer is well-decorated and comfortable -- we loved coming back here after a hike to relax - perusing the books and watching movies (or playing a round of backgammon) with a glass of wine. The view is gorgeous and Caroline couldn't be a more gracious host. We had a terrific time talking with her and hearing about the renovation process. I highly recommend the avion as an alternative option to the hotel and camping options in Big Sur.

No real privacy or sense of the great outdoors.

Left on 07/09/2012 for a stay in June 2012

Caroline is a charmer--full of energy and enthusiasm, however the photos do not show that you are not only close to their house (which she told me when I inquired, but without real disclosure to privacy issue ) but there is also another house next to that. The residents of that house stood and stared at me our first morning without even a nod. We were not encouraged to explore the trail on the land--in fact the comment when I inquired was about poison oak. Forget the chocolates on the bed and provide drinking water and firewood both of which we had to go get ourselves after a day driving, confusing directions on a challenging road. Interesting books and a cute trailer, with comfortable bed. We would have been much happier at about half the price.

      Honeymoon High light

Left on 05/15/2012 for a stay in April 2012

After the hustle and bustle of getting married, travelling to San Francisco and Santa Cruz staying at Big Sur Getaways was a real change in pace and a very welcome one.

Caroline was great, she really made us feel welcome and the airstream was a dream come true for my wife and a great experience for both of us.

Also Caroline was kind enough to help us outside of just putting us up. She had great advice on where to go and what to do even helping us book tickets for visits to attractions.

Location wise it was great, just what we needed, a bit of time alone with no pressure to do anything. We enjoyed cooking for ourselves when we liked. Watching the sun go down and staring up into the night sky with the warmth of the fire pit.

We only stayed for 3 nights but we could really have stayed for longer.

I would advise anyone looking to stay in this area to stay at Big Sur Getaways. Most definitely the high light of our honeymoon.

      Thanks Caroline

nice trailer but not as secluded as photos look

Left on 04/23/2012 for a stay in June 2011

The trailer was very nicely redone. The property around it is pretty, but there is a large house about 40 feet away, which conveniently does not show in the pictures. The owners live in another house which looks down at the trailer from above. It was quiet here, but don't rent it if you seek anything near total privacy both noise-wise and visually. It is a good place to stay (although a bit pricey), just don't be surprised when it is not as secluded as it appears in the photos. The owner Werner was really nice and helpful, so I hate to say something bad, but it just did not feel good that the photos sort of misrepresented the setting.

      Peaceful Vintage Glamping

Left on 03/30/2012 for a stay in March 2012

We loved staying in this vintage trailer while in Big Sur! If you're looking to truly get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of this part of the country, this is the place to stay! It was very peaceful and quiet and we loved sitting outside at night staring up at the stars all by ourselves.

Caroline was very welcoming and since we arrived after dark, she met us to guide us the way up, then showed us around the trailer. She and her husband do live close to the trailer, but the trailer is situated so that we still felt secluded and they are very respectful of privacy.

The trailer inside was unbelievably cute and very well maintained. Caroline seems to have thought of everything to keep you cozy and feeling right at home.

My only reason for not giving this 5 stars would be the shower (which I suppose should be expected in a vintage camping trailer). It took a long time for the water to come up into the shower head, I turned off water while I soaped up, but when I turned it on again it didn't come through the shower at all and I ended up splashing myself with cold water from the faucet to rinse off.

Aside from that, the experience at this trailer was wonderful, cozy and romantic. We even ran into some wild turkeys in the woods!

We came up the hill for the weekend to our "home" on the hill - this vintage trailer was such a treat. We had everything we needed right there, and the location is to die for. Great restaurants and shops in the area, and great hiking right out the front door. We were rained in on Saturday night, but not to worry, Caroline has supplied the trailer with some great movies, and we watched the old classic, "Cool Hand Luke". We would come back here in a minute.

The only one thing that we didn't know before we came is that the tap water is not potable, so make sure to bring in your own water. Bring snacks and food, too, (there is a refrigerator) - all that comes in handy if you get rained in.

Great spot for a simple, relaxing, outdoors-y vacation

Left on 01/14/2012 for a stay in January 2012

This trailer is very clean, very modern and very livable. Despite its small size, it feels very roomy inside and two people can move around very easily without bumping into each other. Everything works the way it's supposed to and we never felt like we were lacking any amenities. Caroline was a gracious host and had answers ready the few times we had questions. Mostly we were just left alone, which is what we wanted. There was also a fire pit, which we weren't expecting and which was an extremely pleasant surprise. We grilled, we hiked, we sat around the fire and drank a few beers. Altogether a very simple and relaxing trip.

One previous commenter mentioned that it was cold inside the trailer...this person must have been cursed with terribly cold weather outside. For us, it got below 40 degrees outside every night and the inside of the cabin remained warm and toasty...I even had to shut off the heater a couple of times.

There are amazing hiking trails available right off the property. Caroline's maps don't show all of the trails available in andrew Molera State Park, so I recommend heading uphill on the trail right off the property. Soon (20-30 mins?) you'll come to a sign pointing back the way you came that calls the trail you were just on the "Boundary Trail". Continue the only way you can go and this is the "Southern Boundary Trail". At the end of this trail (another 20-30 mins) you will come to the "Ridge Trail" and now you have a choice...to the right will take you on a long journey (over an hour?) all the way down to andrew Molera Beach. It's gorgeous and if you are in for a long hike, I recommend it. To the left on the Ridge Trail is a shorter trip through gorgeous groves of trees and eventually, a lookout point with amazing views. From there you can also head down the "Panorama Trail" to the bluff over the water, and other trails.

Left on 01/02/2012 for a stay in November 2011

The trailer was a great place to spend a few days in the Big Sur area (where it's very tricky to find accommodations!), with easy access to lots of great hiking and sightseeing. Unfortunately we were there in the late fall, and the trailer was quite chilly, even with the use of a space heater that Caroline and Werner had made available. We were chilly and damp for a lot of the stay, which somewhat tempered our enjoyment of the very cute decor and great use of space. I would definitely recommend the cabin for warmer weather stays, but would need to bring even more layers to brave another late-November stay!

A perfect base camp for exploring Big Sur; highly recommended

Left on 09/17/2011 for a stay in August 2011

We stayed here for a few days, getting out of NM in the heat of the summer. "We" are a couple with a 3-year old daughter. We had a grand time, and found the accommodations to be exemplary. The trailer is as described; vintage in decor, but in good enough condition for a comfortable modern vacation. The trailer decor has been lovingly "curated" to be just kitchy enough to inspire nostalgia, without being tacky. The books and movies in the trailer are a homey addition. When the entire family came down with a vacation head cold (boo!!), we all snuggled on the bed and watched movies on the flat screen. We cooked most of our own meals in the trailer/ using the gas grill on the trailer's patio. If you are going to do this, buy your groceries outside of Big Sur, which has very limited (and very expensive) grocery options. Restaurants here are vacation-town expensive as well, so the fact that the trailer has a fully equipped kitchen is a big plus. Even if you just do breakfast in the trailer, or sandwich lunch, you will save considerable cash. The trailer allowed us to sort of "camp" Big Sur, without having to lug equipment across the country or set up and take down camp. We spent our days on the beach, hiking, sitting by the Big Sur River, visiting some of the local restaurants (namely, Nepenthe), and just enjoying the fact that it wasn't 110 degrees outside. The hosts, Caroline and Werner, were gracious, professional, and easy to communicate with; no drama. If you're considering the trailer, go and have a great time.

When I booked it I knew i was going to love it, however when I told my fiancee she was like, "A trailer on the side of a mountain?! This is part of your romantic getaway..." Yet, the second we arrived the "Sooo cutes" started pouring out of her mouth. Then we got inside and went into full blown, "Oh baby, this is perfect" mode. Caroline has essentially curated a well designed, modern yet homey feel in 20 some odd feet of trailer and best yet it comes with all the trappings of a home. Fridge, range, sink, dining room table, home stereo, comfy bed, even a shower! We had an amazing time and I would go back at the drop of a hat. Caroline and Werner have something very special in that trailer and anyone interested should definitely check it out.

      Best. Place. Ever.

Left on 06/02/2011 for a stay in January 2011

I stayed in the vintage trailer for 2 months, one of them with a newly adopted dog, and it was a living experience so unique that it will probably never be matched. The trailer is beautifully restored, with all it's original 1970s details and decor, and was the perfect amount of space for an itinerant like myself. The landlords are lovely, and very helpful in fixing and maintaining the various unusual utilities that come with trailer living. It's a surreally beautiful place on a mountain by the ocean, and I was grateful to have them nearby in an otherwise remote location. My newly adopted dog also benefited from the company of their two puggles; there were a lot of dog play-dates on Pfeiffer beach. In short, I can't recommend this spot more highly to anyone looking for a getaway, whether it be for a few days or a few weeks.

Lovely relaxing space away from it all.

We stayed for a few days at the end of March. After a brief adaptation to the space, every day got progressively more relaxing and enjoyable. The trailer has been restored beautifully by someone with a great eye for detail. The bed and living area are incredibly comfortable and the deck and surrounding area are nice as well. When our vacation came to an end, we would have been happy to stay for another few weeks. We look forward to returning again some time.

      Hidden jewel in the mountains!

Left on 12/13/2010 for a stay in December 2010

The vintage trailer is a unique way to experience the outdoors while enjoying amenities such as a kitchen, bathroom, comfortable bed, and tv/dvd. The trailer is cozy and provides sufficient room for 2 people. The location is private yet close to the owners' house (which provides a sense of security).

Caroline is friendly and available if you need anything. She also provided us with great recommendations for hiking and site-seeing. Most sites were a short drive from the trailer. Be sure to drive a car that can handle the curvy dirt driveway to the trailer!

Peaceful & charming accomodations in Big Sur

Left on 09/12/2010 for a stay in August 2010

My husband and I stayed in this charming trailer for our anniversary and we had a wonderful time. The trailer is tastefully decorated, is in a peaceful and private location, and Caroline is a perfect host. We were able to cook all of our meals and enjoy beautiful mountain views while dining. Caroline has some great hiking books and can help you navigate the area. It was exactly the cozy getaway we were hoping for. I do recommend bringing your own water and buying groceries before you get into Big Sur since it can get expensive. The road to the trailer is very private, but this also means you need a car that can handle unpaved, winding roads.

      An absolute Gem!

Left on 08/27/2010 for a stay in August 2010

My husband and I loved staying in this sweet and oh-so-cozy trailer! Every detail has been well thought-out and planned to ensure that your stay is comfortable and easy. The decor of the trailer is outstanding. The location is truly incredible, far off the main road and with a view of the surrounding mountains. A great outside BBQ and patio with plants make it easy to enjoy Big Sur's beauty. I highly recommend staying here with your special someone on your next trip to Big Sur. My only advice is to bring along your groceries and water, as finding reasonably priced food in the area is impossible.

wonderful BigSur, quiet place, peaceful environment...

We stayed in the avion vintage trailer and rented the Guest Studio for our daughter for almost ten days; there´s really nothing we missed, and the longer we stayed, the more we felt at home - the trailer is fully equipped with a fridge, kitchen and a bathroom; even a flatscreen and a bunch of movies on DVD are provided. The little wooden frontporch with a Weber Barbecue and sunchairs is the perfect place to have breakfast or a drink at sundown and enjoy the scenic view over the BigSur hills. The family who runs the business are very nice, and did anything to make us feel welcome and comfortable. I´d come back to and recommend that place in the mountains any time.

      The Silver Trailer

Left on 08/14/2010 for a stay in August 2010

We had reservations at a property which was sold a few weeks prior to our vacation and got this referral from the inkeeper. We were a little concerned at the thought of a trailer, but it sounded intriguing... and proved to be delightful. There was a European flavor to the amenities, and the featherbed was lovely. Books about the tradition of the Aerostream "silver trailers" were fun and entertaining. While the stove and fridge were updated, the trailer keeps its retro flavor. After our initial dismay, we decided the lack of microwave was in keeping with the personality of the trailer! No TV, no internet and usually no cell service was a delight as we tend to stay too plugged in even when "resting." The location (Big Sur) is of course, stunning... The location of the silver trailer, is private and accessed on a rather challenging road. Something a little more road-worthy than our Prius would have been nice, but it was still doable. The deck, chairs and outdoor table was a nice touch, and a relaxing setting for dinner or an evening drink. The trailer itself had a place for everything, and has the feel of a well appointed boat. The bathroom is definitely a one-person deal--no sexy bubble baths!

We liked best the unique personality of the trailer and the small little touches throughout; the selection of movies, the books, etc. A fry pan would have been nice, as we are breakfast eaters, and found making scrambled eggs in the saucepan to be a bit challenging. The charcoal provided for the b-que seemed to have been rained on, and made dinner quite late; we solved that with a bag of ready-start charcoal the next day. Note: EVERYTHING in Big Sur is quite expensive; plan to bring everything you might need.

Caroline was a thoughtful host and very responsive. We had a couple of electrical outages which she dealt with quickly. Her touch in the trailer was evident, and she had taken a great deal of care to make it fun and welcoming.

We only stayed for one night, but it was a really cool experience. Vintage but modern. Secluded but convenient. Only thing I would say is check your tires before driving up the driveway. It's a rocky haul.

The Best accomadations in Big Sur

Left on 07/08/2010 for a stay in June 2010

My husband and I stayed in the vintage trailer with our little dog in June for my husband's birthday - and it was perfect. It feels seculded in the mountains, but really you can walk a quarter mile down the mountain and be in town. The trailer itself is artfully restored, complete with a flat screen tv, kitchenette, and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. I really think was more comfortable than our bed at home. Plus, you have a gorgous view from the bedroom. I cannot wait to stay at the trailer again, and I don't think I will stay anywhere else in Big Sur. Caroline and Wern are the perfect hosts.

For a fun and unconventional stay in Big Sur, check out Big Sur Getaway's avoin airstream trailer. It's from 1974 and it has been meticulously restored with comfortable sheets and is much larger and more comfortable than I even imagined. It's in a serene location atop a mountain with gorgeous sunset vies. It's long on charm and nostalgia and unlike anything else around.
