Additional Location Information
Located at the base of the Mule Mountains, at 4800 feet, our two guest cottages Quiail and Hummingbird are a perfect home-base lodging and retreat for birders, bird photographers, nature lovers, artists and writers. Close to Bisbee. Perfect for short getaways or longer vacation rentals, each guesthouse (called casitas in this part of the world), offers comfortable lodging with full kitchen and bath in a rural desert hideaway setting. Lighten your carbon footprint. Our property is 4 miles down a dirt road, in the mesquite scrub, and is “off the grid.” Our two “green” one-bedroom cottages feature solar electricity, and a solar-powered well pump.
Let the sound of silence, the clean fresh air and mountain vistas revive and restore your spirit. As the sun peeks over the Mule Mountains, take a meditative walk through the labyrinth. Stroll the many paths around the property, or along the arroyo which runs next to the cottages. Or grab a walking stick and take the short, steep hike up to the water tanks. Sit on the bench and enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, the grasslands, and Ocotillo “forests” below.
At the end of your day, fire up the grill and get ready for Nature’s evening show. As you watch a brilliant sunset over the Huachuca range to the West, you will begin to see the “reverse sunset” as the red-faced hills to the northeast begin to turn a deep crimson in the warm glow of the sun’s reflection. As shadows begin to deepen, listen for the howling of the coyotes or the call of poorwills. Cotton-tail rabbits will scutter around, and mule deer may make an appearance along the fence or in the arroyo that runs through the property.
Enjoy the clarity and brightness of the moon as it rises over the Mule Mountains to the East. Relax on the porch of your private cottage and watch the Milky Way begin its immense, vast sprawl across the clear desert sky. Watch for bats feeding on local desert plants (or emptying the hummingbird feeders).
While you may feel you are “in the middle of nowhere,” Red Mountain Cottages are a mere 9 miles from Safeway, and 13 miles from the historic mining town of Bisbee, where you can explore shops, galleries, restaurants as well as a world-class mining museum which is a Smithsonian affiliate.

Los Altos, CaliforniaCharming Desert Retreat
Left on 03/11/2013 for a stay in May 2012
We had the good fortune to be invited to "beta-test" a cottage stay gratis in May 2012. The cottages were brand new and clean as a whistle, impressively appointed and totally off the grid!
Since we have always loved the desert and its bird life, this was an ideal location for us. There were several bird feeders set up in the area adjacent to the two cottages, and we experimented with various set-ups for photographing the many different bird species that we found there. -

Santa Cruz, CAA wonderful retreat with great bird watching!
Left on 03/11/2013 for a stay in April 2012
My husband and I can highly recommend Red Mountain Cottages as a restful, attractive and affordable place to stay. The accommodations were clean, tastefully appointed and completely stocked with anything you might need during your stay. Mountain vistas stretch in every direction and the immediate environs are full of unique geological features, flora and fauna. The owner's are avid bird watchers and have many feeding stations. They are happy to answer your questions and make suggestions about things to do.The surrounding area offers a number of interesting day trips.Be sure and visit the historic town of Bisbee and Kartchner Caverns.
