Beautiful house and lots of space...at a cost.

Left on 12/27/2012 for a stay in December 2012

I spent 6 days at Jonah's House with my family over Christmas. The house itself is as gorgeous and spacious as the pictures represent. It comes fully stocked with all the supplies you would have in your own home (kitchen appliances, bed lined, wireless Internet, Direct TV)...unfortunately, all that glitters is not gold... There are a few important things you'll need to know, especially if you rent this house in the winter. First, other reviews may have mentioned how steep the driveway is. They're not kidding! The problem is that there is no system set up for precautionary salting of the roads, so one night we had to abandon our car on the side of the ice-laden road and hike it back to the house in the blistering wind and snow by foot. It was very dark and very dangerous. To make matters worse, the winds knocked trees down bringing power lines down with them. A few hours by candle light (Little House on the Prairie style) would have been fine, but no electricity in Jonah's House also means no running water! Yes, water is brought up to the house by an electric pump. So no power= no pump= no water. This happened twice during the week. "Surelu, there must be a backup generator," you say. No, there is not. Next issue is the infestation of hornets coming from the roof (I kid you not!) I killed 4 in my bedroom alone in one afternoon. We called the property management to send someone to spray and was told the Tirmenex guy would come... in 2days. He never came. On the bright side, seeing how many hornets you can kill with a few pairs of shoes and a can of starch spray makes for an interesting family activity, especially when you have no electricity. Finally, make sure you wash all the bed linen before you use it. I got into bed the first night and my sheets and pillows smelled like women's perfume. Definitely wasn't my fragrance! Overall, it's a good thing that the true meaning of Christmas is more about who you spend it with, not where you spend it.

Thank you for taking the time to review the house. The storms we had were completely unusual and affected much of the East Coast knocking down trees, etc. Unfortunately the weather is totally out of our control and hopefully not a reflection on the house. The power going out is not a typical occurance and we are so sorry for the inconvenience during your stay. We were on the phone all day with Progress Energy as they were updating us.
About the hornets...we are sorry that Terminix was unable to get there sooner, but that has now been taken care of. We also gaurantee that the sheets were clean and washed but will take in to account the suggestion to use fragrance free detergent. I am glad that inspite of this it sounded like you all had an enjoyable time and made memories you won't forget.
We hope you come stay with us again...maybe during a milder time of year!

      Comfortable, rustic and cozy stay

Left on 06/13/2012 for a stay in May 2012

Easy to rent through Greybeard, it's our 4th rental from them and we will continue to use their services. We loved Jonah's house. The view was beautiful, we were away from traffic up on the side of a hill and enjoyed being remote. The cell phone service was in and out but that was fine with us being on vacation but might bother someone who needed to access a cell phone reliably. We met the owner who was likable and gracious. We were able to hike nearby. Enjoyed Black Mountain food and shopping, went to ashville/Biltmore for a 15K run and to Pisgah National forrest to hike and explore. A relaxing getaway. The park and "pond" at Lake Tomahawk in Black Mtn. were a favorite with our girls ages 3 and 9months. We did not see any bears (which we were worried about).

The house is Beautiful but the house cleaning could
use a improvement. (Lot of insects, stained bedding
      and dirty linens.)

this house is amazing! perfect location, close to ashville village, biltmore house, and waterfalls. the only thing we got trouble with was the internet was not working. besides that, everything else is good. The house and the kitchen were clean. We were there three days but we had a lot of fun. I wish we could stay there a bit longer. Maybe next time. I will rent this house again!!!

      very relaxing

Left on 05/24/2012 for a stay in February 2012

We had a great time. The opnly problem was it snowed while were were there and the driveway is very steep and was pretty scary! The house was beautiful and kitchen was perfect to cook meals. We didn't like that there was no TV in the main living room area, though. We had a great time. We would choose this house again in the spring/summer, but not in the winter, too scary!

      Thanks!

      New Years at Jonah's House

Left on 01/05/2012 for a stay in December 2011

Good things: Lovely house, very clean, fabulous gas range with convection oven, amazing view. Greybeard folks terrific. Bad things: no dishwasher detergent and no paper products which we didn't discover until we got there. Very long way back down mountain. Ended up washing dishes by hand. Really perplexing that only TV was upstairs away from wonderful fireplace. Nice to have TV upstairs for children but need a big TV downstairs. Crummy pillows and bed linens. Loved the location.

This is a beautiful cabin. Makes us want to buy such a place. Views as far as Black Mtn. The cabin was clean and comfortable for three couples. Steep driveway a little scary in the dark especially if it is raining. Close to asheville. Definitely would recommend.

View from the deck - breath taking!

Amazing home in a beautiful setting

Left on 10/27/2011 for a stay in October 2011

This home is located at the top of mountain in a beautiful gated community. The home was will stocked with all of the essentials including plenty of towels even for three adults and two kids.

The neighborhood of this home is teeming with wildlife. We saw tons of birds including owls and hawks, deer several times, but the highlight of the stay was seeing a black bear three of the five days of our trip.

Black Mountain is a great little town with lots of quaint shops and places to eat. We especially like its location to so many things we wanted to do like the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls, Mount Mitchell, Geocahing and asheville

Relaxing on the top of the mountain

Left on 09/27/2011 for a stay in September 2011

My husband and I stayed at Jonah's House over the Labor Day weekend and had a wonderful time. This was the fifth cabin we have rented with Grey Beard and we have always had a great experience with their rentals. The kitchen was very well equipped. The master bedroom bed was quite comfortable. The couches in the main living room were also comfortable. The home site is in a perfect location for long range views but they cannot be seen until the leaves on the trees are gone. The development this cabin is located in - Laurel Ridge is well taken care of. All of the homes are nice. It is a gated community and only a 10 minute drive to downtown Black Mountain. The approach to the entrance of Laurel Ridge is also beautiful - a long pasture with cows, horses, the occasional deer and wild turkeys. We even got to see a black bear in the driveway which was very cool. The only thing I would change about this cabin are the black lacquer framed pictures hanging in the dining room and living room, they greatly take away from the cabin's beauty. In the pictures on the rental site I thought it was a flat screen TV hanging over the couch but it was one of the pictures - a TV would have been better.

Log home nestled in nature in a relaxing, quiet community . The logs in the home are hand scraped, and the smell of the wood is so inviting as you enter. Real nice layout in the kitchen to cook in. Nice size master bathroom with large jetted tub. Couches are very comfortable and cozy decor.

Nice home, but view could be improved with tree removal

Left on 08/17/2011 for a stay in August 2011

This is a very nice place, and it could be an incredible place if they would remove a few trees and expose the view! It is such a shame to be at the very top of the ridge and not be able to see the long range view. Other than that, we enjoyed the home thoroughly.

The house was well equipped and as pictured on the web site

Left on 08/25/2010 for a stay in August 2010

The kitchen was really nice and a joy to cook in; it was open to the rest of the house so everyone could talk and visit. The web site description was correct but slightly misleading; it said three bedrooms and three baths. That sort of implies one bath for each bedroom but, there is one bedroom and two baths on the main floor and two bedrooms and only one bath upstairs. The house was very clean and well equipped. I would definitely consider staying again. One big problem though - we were given the wrong code for the gate on the gated community and there is no cell phone signals at the gate location. Luckily a friendly resident was willing to give us the correct code - it could have been a big problem!
