      Black Bear Cabin Great stay

Left on 09/29/2012 for a stay in August 2012

I have always enjoyed the carolina mountains but never stayed in Black Bear. It is kind of off the beaten path but thats what you expect when you stay in a cabin. I really loved the layout of this cabin, huge downstairs den/family area. comfortable bed up in the master bedroom. my dog loved the trip up from FL and enjoyed his stay as well .. he got away from us and decided to explore but we caught him. thanks again and we will return. we took full advantage of the rafting, visiting the biltmore and just enjoying the mountains.

Left on 09/27/2012 for a stay in August 2012

The cabin was large enough to accomodate our family of four quite comfortably. The layout allowed everyone their own space and privacy. The location was great - (close to asheville and Black Mountain) yet it offered peace and quiet. We loved the stream!

My mom and I stayed at Black Bear Cabin in late august 2012. It was a lovely place, just right for us, and conveniently located to asheville and Chimney Rock. My only complaint is the hot tub never got hot! The water just stayed cool even with the thermostat all the way up.

      must be good friends...cozy

Left on 07/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We were on motorcycles and driveway is steep (we were warned)but we are very experienced motorcyclists and it was no problem until it rained, then treacherious.
Cabin was cute, cozy, and comfortable. Great for 3 people and good for 2 couples as long as they are very good friends...luckily, we were.
The small bathroom needs a shelf for toiletries and the counterweight for the nozzle on the faucet in the kitchen was not there and the faucet on the end of the hose would not retract. Very minor incedents but, worth mentioning.
In all fairness, this cabin was not advised by Carolina Mornings for 2 couples and we would probably try them again.

      Enjoyed our stay

Left on 01/26/2012 for a stay in June 2011

Black Bear Cabin is in a lovely setting near a babbling brook high up on the mountain. The house was comfortable enough - overall a bit dark inside (walls all painted a deep taupe color and there was very little in the way of lighting), but well equipped. The outside deck was a wonderful spot to relax after days of hiking and biking. There's a fun little family-owned restaurant/pub right down the road (aptly named Straight away Cafe), which we wish we had discovered earlier in our week's stay. We chose this cabin because it was dog-friendly and had a fenced yard but were very disappointed in the fenced area. It was on a very steep, brush-covered slope under the front of the house and sections of the flimsy wire fence were knocked over when we got there. We attempted to fix the fence but opted to tie our dog to a cable when putting him out since were were afraid that he could easily get through the fence. But then the cable kept getting caught on the brush in the area. But we very much enjoyed walking with our pup down the dirt road along the creek and wading in the water. The spa was not working when we visited (June 2011) but was supposed to be getting fixed after we left. Also, just a note of caution that the lower-level doggie door made it possible for anyone to reach in and up to unlock the door from the inside, although crime certainly didn't seem to be an issue in the area! All-in-all we had a very relaxing time at Black Bear Cabin.

      Perfect Black Mountain cabin stay

Left on 01/19/2012 for a stay in October 2011

The house was in the perfect spot and provided the perfect space. The rooms were very inviting and everything was clean and provided for. The basement was huge...if you have a group it is an ideal hang out space. There is even a hot tub! The wrap around porch if perfect for taking in the mountains. It is close to downtown Black Mountain as well as asheville...what a plus. There is an awesome little hiking place just down the road to top the experience off at the Black Bear Cabin. We would definitely stay again.

It is difficult to gauge the size of a home on the internet, and we are sorry to hear that it was not as big as you would have liked. We are also sorry to hear that there was not enough lighting in the cabin for your needs. We are examining the idea of more lighting; thank you for the feedback. Black Bear Cabin offered a quiet, private and comfortable retrea

Left on 11/24/2009 for a stay in September 2009

Overall we were satified with our accommodations at Black Bear Cabin. The setting was beautiful, the creek delightful. The cabin had most everything we needed since we just wanted to rest and relax and eat-in. Allowing us to have our little dog stay with us was a big plus. There were a few issues that bear (pardon the pun) reporting:

      1. The main coded entrance door has a doggie door that offers easy access to unlock the door from the inside. The interior security bar has been broken off leaving the cabin insecure.

      2. The hot tub was great and very clean...but, since it was raining it would have been better to provide some type of shelter that doesn't allow the rain to drip on guests. The above decking doesn't provide enough protection from the rain.

      3. There were several items missing from the kitchen as listed on the doors of the kitchen. Most needed item that was missing was the hand mixer.

      4. The downstairs furniture arrangement and too-small TV made watching/enjoying TV impossible. Either rearrange the furniture or get a larger TV! We had to watch a football game in our bedroom which was not comfortable.

      5. The rocking chairs on the deck need some repair. Nails protruding on the seat left holes in my pants! And I spent a LOT of time on that covered porch...so beautiful and peaceful.

Please pardon us for not returning to these issues sooner! We at Carolina Mornings do not like to respond without answers, but sometimes it takes us a bit to connect with the owners and find the responses we are satisfied with. We did want to get back in touch with you and assure you that your suggestions did not go unheard! We take the safety of our guests very seriously and want you to know that the dog door is now locked and secured- thank you for pointing this out! Regarding the hot tub, the owner is considering the issue and your suggestion of an overhang is a great remedy! The owner is also considering the issue of the television and has agreed that it is too small. The kitchen has been restocked, and the rocking chairs have been repaired. Once again, we really appreciate you taking the time to point these things out to us; the comfort and security of each of our guests is important and what we have built our thriving business off of!! Great Vacation Cabin.

Left on 07/12/2009 for a stay in May 2009

We had a great stay at Black Bear Cabin. It was awesome for our dog to be able to have his own area outside in the fenced in yard. The cabin had everything we needed. We would definately recomend this cabin to anyone and if we are ever in the Black Mountain/Chimney Rock area again we will stay here.
Our only bad experience was not with the cabin but with the 800 number Carolina Mornings gave us. When we arrived the fence around the yard was not complete and about 5 sections of fence. I tried to call the 800 number 2-3 times and it just rang and rang. Eventually I found sections of wire fence in the shed and closed the gap (not really what I had planned after a 8 hour drive). This had nothing to do with the cottage that was awesome.

      Dear Batts Family,

Thank you for your great review of Black Bear! We are so glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. Thank you also for your note about the fence and the 800 number, and for giving us the opportunity to respond. We do not advertise Black Bear as having a fence, knowing that it is only partially complete. Regarding the 800 number, we do have our own toll free number that goes to our office during business hours, with a voicemail if we are assisting other customers. If it is after office hours, the number provides the option to leave a message for our after hours on-call staff. There is also a toll free number for our Mountain Discovery Pass, that goes to ASI, the company that helps guests make reservations for their free amenities. In either case, we are not sure why you were not getting a human or voicemail response and we are sorry for the glitch! Thanks again for the positive review and we hope you'll come back and stay with us again!

My husband, me and our 2 pups spent the New Years there and a couple of days before and after ... the cabin is exactly as depicted on the internet. However they dont tell you about the huge medow a few steps away where our pups ran till their hearts content. Even though it was cold, the pups got on the water at the creek, happily splashin here and there. We had our 'own' trail up the mountain. We also found the doggie door to the enclosed yard a BIG plus. The beds are comfortable, eveything clean and neat. The pool table an extra plus. If anything at all in the negative: the cabin needs a microwave and a working outside thermometer, we Florida folks wanted to know just how cold it really got! The place is romantic, secluded yet 15 minutes or less away from a huge supermarket and a couple of more minutes to Ashville. We had ourselves one of the most wonderful New Years yet! Am looking forward to go back, maybe in a different season, just to compare. WONDERFUL PLACE!

Rustic, delightful, exciting! Great place for family vacation/holiday. Especially enjoyed the pool table, hot tub, large deck and porch, and loved the stream and waterfall. But be ware - no microwave, no dishwasher, and no TV on middle level of house. Also, there were noticeable stains on the lower level carpet, probably from pets, that could be a real turn off when first entering the house from that level. We did not have a pet, but it is a great facility for your dog(s). Overall, a very positive experience. Great assistance and guidance from rental company staff.

      Dear wv_webb,

Thank you so much for your feedback. We appreciate hearing what our guests liked and didn't like about their stay, so that we can improve upon our services. It is important to know about your experience at Black Bear, so that we can communicate the needed improvements to the owner and our property management department.

We are pleased you enjoyed several of Black Bear's attributes, and that your experience with our staff was positive. We are planning to replace the patio furniture early next year, when outdoor furniture becomes readily available in stores again. We have also scheduled our maintenance team to do a walk through of the home and repair/replace any broken fixtures.

Finally, we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our properties and if notified we will promptly respond to and address any issues. The last thing we want is for you to have a negative response to our properties, and cleanliness is paramount!

The walling hangings and fixtures are all loose and improperly installed. The upstairs bedroom bed is falling apart and is missing bolts attaching the head and foot boards to the frame. We would not stay here again for what we paid.

Response from Carolina Mornings - 01/02/2009

      Carolina Mornings

      Manager

      Dear es2008,

Thank you for your response and the feedback you provided for the property. We are very appreciative to have you share your concerns so we can actively address theses issues.

Based on your feedback, our property management team was able to visit the property and make necessary repairs. We repaired the bed shortly after your stay in early October.

Property management also checked all of the wall hangings including photos and now all are secure. We did notice a couple of electrical plates that were loose, and those have been replaced. Our notes show that we attempted to contact you for more description on the loose hangings and what needed to be remedied, but we did not receive any response from our call or email attempts.

We attempt to take the quickest action possible when hearing of a property issue. We're sorry that this was not addressed before your stay, as we take pride in our properties and want to make sure everything is working properly.

Again, thank you for bringing these issues to our attention and giving us an opportunity to correct the necessary items. We hope that you will choose a Carolina Mornings property again for any future visit to our area. We are glad you were able to enjoy the scenic view and the peace and quiet that Black Bear provides! Thank you for staying with us.

Nice cabin. Wonderful to be able to bring the dogs along with us. Worth a walk down the road to the creek. Very nice swimming hole for the dogs! Had a great time and would consider another trip back for sure.

Wonderful home...perfect for a belated honeymoon!

Left on 09/07/2008 for a stay in July 2008

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Black Bear Cabin. I was
deployed to Iraq 6 weeks after we were married in August 2007,
and time didn't permit us to get away. We looked forward to
this trip for almost a year!
Everything about the cabin was perfect for us! The scenery was
perfect, and the setting was a Romantic place to reconnect. We
enjoyed the hot tub especially as well as the loft master
bedroom. The cabin was at a great location and we were able to
make trips to Dupont State Forest and Chimney Rock State Park.
We also enjoyed exploring downtown Black Mountain.
Our only complaint was that the internet was dial-up, and it
      didn't work for us.

      See Black Bear

Left on 09/07/2008 for a stay in August 2008

It was a late summer weekend, and we are thinking that the tees of Autumn or even snowey weather would be great in this cabin. There is a pretty little brook, just across the lane, and it has a pleasant little voice. We were able to have some fine meals, made in a well prpared kitchen. The pool table was in good conditon. The two fireplaces would be cozy on a winter day. For us, the real treat was seeing the Black Bear, about three miles from the cabin on our way in.

      Terrible experience

Left on 07/02/2008 for a stay in June 2008

We visited during the East Coast heat wave in early June - temperatures in the high 90's. The central air conditioner refused to start, even to blow hot air. Clearly, its operation had not been checked before our arrival, or someone would have detected this.
The parts needed to repair it were not available locally and we spent 5 hot days and nights without AC.
To compound the problem, one of the personnel who came by to check on the AC (while we were away)left a gate open that we had previously closed and locked. As a result, our dog was attacked by a neighbor's dog and required emergency veterinary surgery.
We were offered a gift certificate for a one night stay in the future for our troubles, as though that would compensate for the unpleasant stay and a vet bill in excess of $1,000. However, even that token offering has never been sent to us.

      Excellent getaway!!!

Left on 07/02/2008 for a stay in June 2008

We stayed in Black Bear Cabin, Black Mountain, NC in June 2008. Although a bit out of the way from the city, it is a wonderful retreat in the middle of the mountains. From the small creek whose gentle sound was heard as you stepped out into the second floor balcony to the cozy fireplace on the living room and outdoor whirlpool tub, this place is really a treat!!
It's nicely appointed and all the basic conveniences (fully equipped kitchen, washer & dryer, two full bathrooms and plenty of outdoor deck space) are here. Just make sure you gather up plenty of groceries & supplies for the day/week since driving to get them is a bit of a trip, so careful planning will add to the joy of your stay.
It's right next to Lake Lure and the beautiful city of Chimney Rock and its national park, which we plan to visit again.
All in all, I recommend the place for everyone who is seeking a bit of decompression from everyday life with a taste of the wonderful surroundings of the Blue Ridge Mountains!

      Peace and tranquility

Left on 05/19/2008 for a stay in May 2008

I work in the vacation rental business in Gatlinburg, TN and met one of the representatives from Carolina Mornings at a conference in Myrtle Beach. I had thought of renting a place in Asheville as I visit the Biltomore quite often. However, after receiving a phone call from a long lost friend who lives in Charlotte, we decided to rent a cabin that was close to both of us. We were looking for quiet, peaceful and simple, and that is what we found at Black Bear. While the outside of the cabin needs some refinishing, the owners have obviously spent some time and effort on updating the interior, mainly the mid and upper levels. Only 2 TV's were in the house, one in the upper bedroom and one in the game room. We spent most of our time in the living room, so a flat panel TV with DVD would be a great addition. The house was comfortable and great for dogs - my friend's had a great time in the large field next door! The kitchen was well stocked with the needed cooking utensils for the one night we stayed in. All in all, we had a great stay!

The standard by which honeymoons should be measured!

Left on 05/15/2008 for a stay in November 2007

This cabin was wonderful! The porch was great for morning coffee and romantic evenings. Just a short walk away is a great creek with huge rocks for sitting and sharing a glass of wine. A nice trail leads to a quiet little spot that is perfect for reflecting on the things that brought us together in the beginning. The cabin is in such a nice, quiet spot and is perfect for connecting with each other. We will definitely be back.

Quiet and peaceful, and we were able to take our dog!

Left on 05/13/2008 for a stay in March 2008

The most important thing to us was that we had our two young adult children and the family dog with us on this trip! Even though there are two bedrooms, there is a sleeper couch on the bottom floor. This set-up worked out great for us. Our children enjoyed the pool table and the hot tub. Also, this is a pet friendly rental. There is even a pet-door that leads out to a fenced-in area. This was convenient. Our dog could run out when he needed, and he could be out with us without us worrying about him. The only snags were the lack of sheets for the sleeper bed. We didn't realize until rather late at night that they were not there. The next day we called, and they were brought out. Also, my daughter needed the internet for school work and with what was available, she could not access what she needed. Dial-up internet service was listed as available. If this is something that you need, you might not count on it. We loved the central location to Asheville, Black Mountain, and Chimney Rock. We would definitely go back again. We were very pleased with the service provided by Carolina Mornings, and plan on utilizing them again. We really do feel that our trip might have been a a one-time only opportunity as our children will soon be graduating and starting careers. We might not have this chance again to all be together for this length of time. It was a memorable vacation to the Asheville area, and our rental of the Black Bear Cabin made it perfect.

We had two couples at the cabin for a weekend and it was a great time. We had a lot of fun playing pool on the brand new table that they had just put in and really enjoyed ourselves on the huge deck as well. There are some great little spots to expolore in the woods around the cabin too with a peacful creek/river running right by the end of the driveway. We would defintily go back to Black Bear Cabin anytime!

      A wonderful reTREAT

Left on 05/01/2008 for a stay in April 2008

We had a wonderful time in the Black Bear cabin at Black Mountain - private, relaxing and we found the cabin to be very well equipped with everything we needed. The little creek and the trails around the cabin were fantastic to explore. Fishing in the creek, I found out, even though legal with a permit, doesn't go well with the neighboor(s); something I respected after being asked not to. There are plenty of other fishing spots around. Carolina Mornings provided top of the line service (thanks Debra!), and we actually ended up extending our stay with one night. That alone should reflect how satisfied we were. I would say the cabin is a bit farther from Asheville than the 20 min stated in the description, but hey - it's vacation so who cares! We'll be back!

      Owner's Comment: Enjoy and Relax!

Left on 04/17/2008 for a stay in January 2008

As the owner of Black Bear, I am delighted to be able to share my first vacation rental to visitors of the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of my favorite aspects of Black Bear is listening to the roaring creek, sitting in the hot tub and looking up into the night sky and seeing the bright stars. Our brand new pool table has been a great hit for our recent guests and since it is a pet friendly property, I believe this a wonderful getway for all.
