Rancho CordovaRenters Beware!! Great view, but not clean or safe!!
Left on 06/17/2013 for a stay in June 2013
I stayed here for 3 nights last week with my mom, stepdad, son (4), and aunt, who was visiting from KY. The pictures online and the one review on Tripadvisor were great, so we booked it. It wasn't cheap, so I assumed it would be "nice". Well, I was wrong.
I had spoken with the Property Manager several times before arriving (Jim, who is very nice) and was told to watch my son on the patio and to also be careful about walking down to Gleason Beach, as you have to walk right on Highway One to get there. I appreciated that information very much! But, we were not told of the safety issues with the upstairs bedroom windows, nor were we told about the pervasive ant problem in several rooms. Those two issues hindered our stay completely and had I known, I would not have rented this house. Room by room, here is what I saw:
Kitchen: Cute and well stocked. Huge ant problem over all counters and under the sink.
Living Room/Dining Room: Huge windows with great views! Decorative pillows are old, flat and stained and need to be thrown out. Floors and light fixtures over the table need a good, deep cleaning.
Fireplace: Nice insert and we were given wood for a fire as promised by Jim! However, more ants came out as soon as we put one small bowl of dog food down by the patio door. Also, quite a bit of tangled wires from the TV, DVD player, cable box and extension cord, which are unsightly and unsafe.
Bathroom 1 (by front door): The carpet is filthy (!) by this bathroom and into the bedroom. The bathroom has resident spiders hanging from the ceiling and a huge black widow under the vanity. Make sure you turn on the lights if you use this at night.
Bedroom 1 (by front door): This mattress is so concave, it is unusable. I slept here and ended up using the pillow under my torso instead of head in an attempt to be able to lay flat. Ripped, old bedspread; filthy carpet; worn, chipped paint on the small table; dirty shelving unit that also ended up with ants - so many ants that I found them in my suitcase when I got home. Gross.
Bedroom 2 (downstairs by kitchen): The mattress and box springs are sitting on the floor. Really?? Aside from the esthetics, this also makes the bed very low and therefore, not easy to get in and out of for elderly people.
Bathroom 2: Very small, dirty skylight, and really needs updating.
Bedroom 3 (upstairs): Good size room with amazing views! Sunny and pretty clean! However, the floor-to-ceiling windows have no locks, no screens, and slide open very easily to an 18 inch landing that leads to an unobstructed 50 foot drop. Very unsafe for kids and dogs. There is nothing to stop a fall from these windows and they are only 6 inches from the floor, so they are very accessible to kids and dogs!!
Bathroom 3 (upstairs): Large and pretty clean. The jets in the Jacuzzi tub were pretty dirty, so we didn't use the tub, but it does have an amazing view of the Pacific ocean.
As for the views, I do have to say they are amazing. The house is on a large bluff and sits right on the edge (literally), so the views of the Pacific are completely unobstructed from every room in the house. Large picture windows in the living room provide a breathtaking view of the ocean and sunsets. The patio off the living room is a good size and has built-in wood benches and a table, weatherworn and beachy, and very cute! The upstairs bedroom has another patio, which is good size and had two lounge chairs for relaxing.
All in all, the house needs a deep, deep cleaning, safety locks on the windows, new mattresses and bed frames, and a regular visit from a pest control company. I called Jim after we left and told him of my complete dissatisfaction with the house and the safety issues. He told me he would probably no longer allow children as he agreed the windows are not safe. I hope he sticks to this policy!

Left on 03/08/2013 for a stay in November 2006
this was our first experience staying at the ocean, and wow -- we stayed at this home for a week in November. each bedroom has its own bathroom, and the views will absolutely take your breath away when you walk in the front door. the kitchen is small, but very functional. the deck is a good size and I loved feeding the gulls (uh - they expected it!) when we stayed, there was a garage we could use, and a small yard out front for the dogs. there was no easy beach access, however. you have to walk down hwy 1 a bit to get to the beach. we loved this place for the dramatic views, and the cozy hominess. when I win the lottery, this is the first place I would look to move in to!
