We chose one of the coldest weeks of the year, and the hamlet was all but cut-off by snowdrifts when we arrived. The cottage was very cold on the first day, but by using all available electric fires, boosted by the big gas fire in the sitting room, we managed to get it heated up. One of the fires had only one bar working, and none of the appliances seem to have been pat tested. There was quite bad condensation in the upstairs area, but the owner had provided a humidifier.
There were no smoke alarms in the sitting room, and no heat sensor in the kitchen, so with all the fires on, safety was an issue.
The kitchen floor was very sticky - it obviously hadn't been cleaned, and we found lots of very old, opened food packets and jars in the cupboards an freezer, which wasn't nice.
The furniture left a lot to be desired. The mattress on the bed was a very cheap, bendy affair, and the pillows and duvet were covered in brown stains. The three piece suite in the sitting room had cane sides which were falling apart and had big holes.
On arrival, we were shown our single parking space, which was some way from the cottage. When a friend visited us and parked outside the cottage, the owner rushed out and was extremely rude to us and to our friend because he'd parked his vehicle with his wheels on the grass verge, and was accused of crushing bulbs. When the snow melted a few days later, we could then see that moles had done far more damage to the bulbs than the car - the whole area was covered in mole hills, so it was all a big fuss about nothing.
So, all in all, the cottage was in a nice area and in warmer weather there would have been fewer problems, but the general cleanliness and condition was spoor, and the owner was rude.
Ps I'm not uploading photos, although I did take some of the furniture and the grass verge.
