A little piece of heaven
This was our second time staying at Elizabeth J. Cottages. We had a fantastic weekend and have booked the same cottage for next year. This little cottage has all the comforts of home. It is right on the edge of the ocean, so the view is spectacular. Although you are within walking distance of restaurants and shops, it is quite private and extremely peaceful. This year, just my husband and I made the trip to Bonavista. We loved having the cottage to ourselves. We enjoyed dinner at the Bonavista Social Club and went "home" for wine in front of the fireplace.
However, last year we took our 7 year old daughter, who loved her quaint bedroom, with the "princess bed". The thing she loved the most is the tine beach just down over the bank at the front of the cottage.
I am well travelled and will confess that I am a pretty picky guest, but I can honestly say I don't have one negative thing to say about our stay at Elizabeth J. Cottages. We are already looking forward to next year. Read more

Thank you for your words well written describing your experiences at the cottage especially that of your daughter's.I look forward to meeting you once again at the cottage!
Lester and Elaine Hedgcock
We booked for our stay at Elizabeth J Cottages in June 2012 - we followed all the reviews of the cottages and looked at the pictures - so thought we had a good idea of what to expect - however the reality was more than we could have anticipated - the cottages are a home away from home in the most unbelievable setting - when we arrived all we could say was wow! - the cottages are elegant but cozy - lots of little extras to make ones stay special - we thoroughly enjoyed all Bonavista had to offer - hikes, walks, even a swim in the chilly water in front of our cottage, historical sites, dolphins and puffins, and especially the wonderful people.
Overall a memorable experience we hope to repeat - thank you to Elizabeth and Glenn our wonderful hosts!

Dear Elaine and Lester:
Thank you for writing such a warm and wonderful review.
It is lovely to read about your experiences staying at one of my cottages. I will be putting your thoughtful pictures up on my website with my thanks.
It was lovely to see your bathing suits on the balcony well used. That spot where you swam is so private with all the sand and beach going back hiding you with the giant walls of rocks.
You are so very welcome for all that you took part in and I do look forward to your coming back again.
John & Suzanne
Well appointed cottage with magnificent setting looking out on bay. Superb sunsets and great place to Whale watch when in season. Elizabeth J. provides those special little touches that make your stay warm, friendly, and personnel. Cozy little cottage with designer feel and best of everything. Loved our stay only too short. Thank you very much for this great review. It is wonderful to hear that your stay was what you wanted and needed.
our favorite spot in newfoundland
we arrived at the cottage exhausted from an un air conditioned ferry ride, and found immediate tranquillity. my best sunset over the the ocean photo was taken here. the bonavista area is magic to begin with, and staying here made everything perfect. would return in a nanosecond, to stay at the cottages, to see my favorite birds, puffins, again, and to dine once more at the bonavista social club.

The cottage was very well kept and clean. The welcome gifts were a nice surprise. It could not have been better I will definitely be coming back in the furture! We had a great week and the cottage really makes you feel at home! Really good local fish and chips close by! Read more

Thank you so much for this review and about the welcome gifts for you and your mom. I am so glad that you enjoyed them.
It is always awesome to see the whales and porpoises from the front deck which is only 40 yds from the Atlantic Ocean and even closer sitting on the 2 acres of grasslands totally private and unobstructed.
I would love to have you and your mom stay again at one of the cottages. It is a rare time indeed to spend time with the pwerful ocean, grasslands and the quiet that does not exist anymore elsewhere.
Spectacular view , immacaulate , cosy , has everything you might
Granted we only spent one nite but if you want to be somewhere special for a week this would be the place to choose .The only thing required would be your food & a few books . Having the constantly changing atlantic Ocean right outside your door is a treat for most . It is a pleasurable experience to enjoy such a degree of thoughtfulness on the part of an owner when one is provided with everything that you could possibily need/want during your stay . One would enjoy the cottage in a snowstorm or a terrific rainstorm . You just don't want to leave . Hope that you get to enjoy it !! Elizabeth & her husband took the time to personally greet us which was nice. The homemade bread awaiting our arrival was a lovely gesture . I value cleanliness , bathroom facilities , mattresses and overall cosyness the most when travelling . I loved this cottage & what it offered . You would be hard pressed to need or want something that was not provided for your use. I loved the overall decor including the window seats & fireplace . It really was perfection. A ten , no doubt about it! You may need to ask a local for assistance re directions once you arrive in Bonavista . If so they will probably escort you there as they did for us. Newfoundlanders are exceptionally helpful & will go out of their way without hesitation.

Thank you for such a delightful and well written review. Your kind words are really appreciated. It is wonderful to know your experiences were exactly why I created the cottages in the first place.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you again!
Tranquility, comfort and beautiful attention to detail!
On our stay to the Elizabeth J Cottages in the Historic town of Bonavista were totally impressed with the entire experience.
The building although recently completed was built in the last century style of the community. The attention to detail was fantastic. The furniture continued this period theme and was locally made by Patterson Woodworking. The artwork and interior ambiance was right on!The linens top quality and the cleanliness superb. I am saving the best comment for last. On a hot august evening we sat on the ocean facing deck and listened to the waves as the sun set on the horizon of the spendid North atlantic. The smell and sounds of the salt sea air revived body and soul!
Well Done Elizabeth J.
We will be back,
Christine(Templeman)LeGrow and family

Exceptional cottage with spectacular view!
The Elizabeth J. Cottage surpassed our expectations. The interior design was beautifully decorated with local artwork and interesting unique knicknacks. The bedrooms were inviting, immaculate and cozy. We just kept saying wow as we toured the rooms upon our arrival. Glen welcomed us and gave us all the info we needed. We had a beautiful fresh loaf of artisan bread with Newfoundland's famous Dark Tickle blueberry jam and a welcome note from Elizabeth J. on our dining table as well. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful warm sunny weather so we could enjoy the front deck overlooking the ocean for the better part of the week including the sunsets. A couple of days the weather was cloudy and cool so we took advantage of the cozy and convenient gas fireplace to warm us up. While we were disappointed that we did not see any icebergs in the bay, Glen came through by providing compensational authentic iceberg ice for our drinks. The linens, pillows and bed were exceptionally clean and fresh and oh so comfortable. The individual terry robes were a really nice touch. The shower worked well and the bathroom provided everything we needed. The kitchen was very organized and provided us with all the necessary tools. The Ninja blender came in handy. Our only advice would be to add some additional side plates and glasses. While there was a sufficient number of plates for our meal there was not enough to last the day and therefore the dishwasher was well utilized.
We enjoyed many walks along the shore as well as through the town and nearby trails. Bona Vista is a great place to relax, tour many historical sites as well as eat some delicious local food. The nearby Social Club, owner Katie Hayes, a chef from the well known Raymonds in St John's is a must! Mifflin's Tea Room was our go to place for Newfoundland specialties as well as their delicious pies. Elizabeth J cottages helped make our first but not last trip to Newfoundland exceptional. What an unforgettable experience! Our stay at Elizabeth J. Cottages surpassed all expectations. My husband and I wanted to do something special for my parents' 65th Birthdays, and we couldn't have chosen any better. Miss Elizabeth went above and beyond her way to ensure that this special trip would leave us all with precious memories. The cottage is impeccably maintained with all the comforts of home; from kitchen amenities, to the comfy plush beds. The large porch allows you to take in endless, stunning, breathtaking views. Ideal location to explore the Bonavista area: we found many trails and hikes, whale watching, small villages which made for perfect picture taking outings for my father's passion (special thanks to Miss Elizabeth for helping with that as well). Personaly, I must admit that it has been a very long time since I have been able to relax, unwind and rest from my hectic work schedule as I did on this trip. We all agree that we would recommend Elizabeth J. Cottages without any hesitation to anybody looking for a quiet, restful stay in the beautiful Bonavista area. Read more

I want to duplicate that cottage! The detail you put into it was nothing short of perfect. It lacked nothing! As I wrote in the guest book, I believe I had the best sleep of my entire life. Paradise in Bonavista!
My husband and I decided spontaneously to escape the city for a weekend of rest and relaxation! We searched the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism site and were so impressed with the Elizabeth J. Cottages website that we called immediately. We were thrilled to find a vacancy for the Friday night. We were not disappointed! We stayed in the 'red' cottage which has 2 bedrooms and an amazing view overlooking the ocean...it was everything we had hoped for and more! The cottage is clean, cozy, comfortable and beautifully furnished with great attention to detail...they have thought of everything!! When we arrived there was a personal welcome note with fresh strawberries, bottled water and a loaf of fresh bread/jam waiting for us! Excellent touches include high ceilings, a lovely gas fireplace, walking sticks, flashlights, travel mugs, candles, first aid kit, spices, condiments, toiletries, a flat screen TV, a DVD player with movies, books, magazines, games, a BBQ, a dishwasher, lovely dishes/pots/pans/cutlery, comfortable beds with beautiful linens, a jacuzzi tub/shower with plush towels, deck chairs, etc etc etc. We didn't need it but there was a washer/dryer with detergent and a playpen. We enjoyed a hike down to the beach and watched the sun set from our deck. It is truly a wonderful place! We would have loved to stay another night but sadly they were booked up! We will definitely return again very soon and plan to stay longer! Although the cottage is in the town of Bonavista it is situated in a very quiet and private area with minimal traffic. The cottage is also pet friendly! Elizabeth J. and Glenn are delightful people and go above and beyond to please their guests...be sure to visit Elizabeth J.'s wonderful Elephant Shop and art Gallery in the middle of town...lots of treasures to be found there! My husband and I rented a cottage for five nights at the end of May 2012. We were looking for an escape from daily life in the far north. The cottage exterior blends perfectly with homes in the area. The interior was wonderfully bright, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. The view from the cottage was awesome! Elizabeth was easy to reach and had extremely helpful suggestions regarding grocery shopping, restaurants, walking/hiking, and everything else. A magical location; a wonderful place
Everything about the cottage was wonderful. The near views over the ocean & headlands and mid-distance view of Bonavista harbour was breath-taking. The deck was ample and seating inviting (though weather a little too bracing) The interior was extremely pleasant. The propane fireplace created a wonderfully cozy atmosphere. The kitchen was well supplied with everything required for simple meals. The bedrooms were very pleasant & beds comfortable. Everything was spotless. Our hosts provided just the right blend of friendly helpfulness and privacy.
A stellar experience all round!

Thank you again Paul.
Luxurious, peaceful, beautiful view, great facilities.
The cottage is absolutely perfect. It is perched on the edge of a cliff, with a path down to a beach for a bracing dip if you are so inclined. The facilities are great, with a perfectly equipped and outfitted kitchen and two bedrooms, both "master" sized. The furniture is very comfy, and the deck has a wonderful view - great for watching sunsets!
A beautiful cottage and view but overpriced!
My wife and I spent 2 nights at the cottage. The cottage was spotless and the view of the ocean was beautiful. There were lots of places to visit within a half hour or so and the people were so friendly. However the price of the cottage was too expensive. The cottage website mentioned there would be food for a continental breakfast provided but there was hardly anything in thecottage. The website didn't mention the rules you would have to follow about leaving things in exactly the same condition you found them. These rules were over-the -top. We had to even sign an agreement. The website mentioned outdoor equipment you could use around the cottage. Some of the equipment we never saw and there wasn't any flat cut grass around the cottage anyway. Obviously, thousands of people have loved the cottages but we were not overly impressed. Read more

Happy New Year to you and your wife Kevin and thank you for your taking the time to submit your feelings about the cottage you stayed in.
I am so sorry that there was a mis-communication regarding the term continental breakfast..However, we love to give our clients( free) freshly baked Newfoundland loaf of bread, bowl of fresh fruit, a bottle of famous Blueberry Jam, made here in Newfoundland. Perhaps this is a term that may cause confusion. I will correct the term and use another that make it clear that we offer " welcome food" since many of our clients are tired and seeing food on the table gives them a little boost before they need to pack or shop.
The suject of Rules: I am a little confused by the use of that word Kevin since there is nothing stating The Rules" anywhere. It starts with "To my dear guests:" What is there are answers to clients questions concerning what to do with the garbage, where to leave it upon departure, where to put bottles etc. what to do with laundry like towels, sheets etc. Again - I will be happy to look at this from your point of view and change anything that smacks of "Rules." Pertaining to the issue of leaving the cottage in the state it was found is now a constant and international way of ensuring that guests do not trash the room or leave it in an unecessary state of repair and extra cleaning. Next time when you are cheching into a hotel - you can ask why they take an imprint of your credit card and most also have you sign a form about leaving the hotel room, B&B room, cottage etc in the state that is found. The wording may be more different - it may say break, or say if extra cleaning is required we will charge you extra for the extra cleaning required.
The equipment was there in the Mud-Room Kevin - hanging up on the wall beside the dryer. There are horseshoes, badminton, and walking sticks handmade in Newfoundland for our guests to use for their pleasure. Fiinally Kevin - we tell all our clients and it is written in the open guest book on the desk that we are on call 24hrs of the day and leave the contact numbers to call us.
If you had any concerns at all, we would love to have heard about them and had the opportunity to correct any concerns you had at that time. All the best to you Kevin and your lovely wife.

Loved the quaint cottage. The decorating was wonderful and the view amazing. Bedding was awesome but the mattresses need to be replaced. High quality mattresses are a must with vacation property - could see the swaying in the worn mattress. Customer service was excellent and we felt warmly welcomed. Was surprised that the tourism industry i.e. museums were very seasonal and not much available outside of the tourist season. Read more

Dear Diane and Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! Thank you for your concern that one of our mattresses needs to be replaced.
What you slept on was a Futon Mattress. They are one of the highest rated mattresses one can get. These mattresses are a Japanese design and are specifically made for anyone who needs a good firm mattress.
All our mattresses are just recently purchased and are made to last for at least 20 years since they are only used for 6 months yearly. We ordered them custom made to be 10 inches in thickness and not the usual 4-5 inches.
These mattresses do not move like the normal mattresses sold. Since every 12 inches in a square pattern, they are solidly stitched right to the other side of the mattress forming solid square with very limited movement of any part of the mattress material.
As well, we turn all our mattresses every week, vaccum them and generally air them out. We also purchased the finest mattress protective cover for each one. Below that cover there is a " "Paradies" Faux that looks like sheep skin that one uses for anyone with tender skin on one side and the other is smooth cotton that offers added support and feels like sleeping on a lovely padding.
In addtion to that the Futon sits on top of hard wood to ensure there is good back support throughout the Queen-sized bed. Normally our clients want to know what mattress we use since they found them so wonderful to sleep on.
I am unsure of how to reply to "your seeing the swaying in the worn mattress."
We are so sorry to hear this mattress did not suit you.
Relaxing and Restorative
We had a lovely trip to Bonavista and the Elizabeth J Cottages provided a warm sanctuary and base camp for us. We were able to take a series of day trips out to small communities nearby and know we were coming "home" to our little cottage by the sea. Our favourite day trips was the Skerwink Trail (make sure to have soup and tea after your walk at the 3 whales restaurant). Another highlight was our visit to the town of Elliston where we saw the puffins and the famous root cellars. Read more

Experience of a life time
We arrived the same time as Hurricane Igor did and were made more than comfortable by the owners, who could not do enough for us. The cottage was more than well equipped and is in a beautiful location with the view of the water and in the distance the harbour. There is really nothing more you needed for your stay. We have all said that we would return there and spend a few days another tiime. Thankyou to Glen for going the extra mile to assure that we were comfortable and safe/ Read more

Glenn and I want to thank you and your spouse for your e-mail and your kind words of support.
Glenn has fond memories of helping all 3 of you in this chaotic time. As you know it was the 1st time in history that Newfoundland Eastern Coastline was hit by Igor the hurricane. It was such a shock to all and was really great that eveyone pulled together to get the roads back together again.
We look forward to be of service to you all again and thank you once more for your gorgeous card that you sent in the mail and lovely words written in our guest review book.

We came from Florida and picked this off the internet. Without a doubt, staying at Elizabeth J. Cottages was one of the best parts of the trip. We were "Wow'ed" by the location (on a cliff on the outskirts of Bonavista) as well as the decor (like out of a magazine). We had everything we needed and felt like it was a 2nd home. Change nothing! We are singing the praises of Elizabeth J. Cottages to all we talk to and hope to be back one day as we would not think of staying anywhere else! Read more

Thank you from Florida for responding to TripKey's review questions and right before the Christmas season too!
Your very kind words mean a lot to us and we are so pleased that you have good memories of you time here.
We hope to see you again in the future.
What a wonderful time we had in Bonavista and Elizabeth J Cottages. The minute we step in we felt at home. We only had two disappointments. We couldn't stay longer and we didn't see any whales. We would love to go back and stay and just enjoy the quiet beauty and the feeling of peaceful, serene living.

First class cottages... hope to stay there again and do some more exploring in the area. Great hiking and photography opportunities. Enjoyed the deck and spectacular ocean view.
We had a wonderful time at Elizabeth J Cottages. The cottages are beautiful and well equipped. The scenery was amazing. We would definitely recommend the vacation.

Would Love to Come Back!!!!
We stayed in your cottage for three nights in July 2009 and would recommend
it highly to all our friends and family. The service was unbeatable, the cottage
was clean, quaint, tastefully decorated and had all the comforts of home. The
rental was for our wedding weekend, and I stayed there with my mom the
night before the ceremony. The bridal party dressed for the wedding in the
cottage, and several of our favorite wedding-day photos were taken both
inside and outside. The photographer could not have asked for a better place
to shoot! The view was amazing and the whales entertained our guests all day
long. Our wedding night was spent in the cottage, followed by brunch and a
gift opening the next day. We were surprised at how many people the cottage
could accommodate for this and even more guests than we thought possible
gathered on the huge deck overlooking the ocean. We are from Newfoundland
and appreciate our gorgeous surroundings every day....staying at Elizabeth J.
cottages was a reminder of just that and to those coming from away, you will
not be disappointed!!!!
The cottage was perfect for our trip - we had everything we needed - and the deck.... large and gorgeous. We spent hours there watching whales and sunsets. Every day was busy - with only short drives to get to spectacular scenery - where we soaked un the endless rugged ocean views and local culture. The cottage was slightly small but perfectly appointed and cozy for two. The people were warm and helpful and welcoming. Overall we loved this relaxing and interesting vacation and cannot think of a single thing to complain about.
Perfect in Every Way
We stayed at Elizabeth J Cottages for two nights. Upon arrival we were met by hosts who went over all the things we needed to know about the cottage. Everything was in first class condition and all equipment we could possibly need was present. In addition, a welcome package including breakfast supplies was left for our use. The cottage was quiet and had a great view, yet was within walking distance of several of Bonavista's main attractions.

Heaven on earth
We wanted a get-away that enabled us to relax and leave our busy lives
behind. Kind of Paradise for A Week. What we found was exactly that - a
way to relax, unwind but not leave behind the things we love - elegance,
first rate accommodations and the little things that make the biggest
differences - like first-rate linens ...
The location is the best - off the beaten path but ON the ocean. After full
days of exploring the area (and there is LOTS to explore) we found
ourselves draped over deck chairs, sipping wine, munching on appetizers
and watching some of the most stunning sunsets we had ever seen. And
why not? The sky was uninterrupted and huge. We were lulled to sleep each
night by the sound of the waves.
The attention to detail at Elizabeth J's place is stunning. We were touched by
the homebaked loaf of bread, homemade jams and other goodies left as a
welcome gift. Everything we needed was at our fingertips - including the
fresh flowers that peppered the rooms and deck.
Would we go back? In a heart-beat. The simplicity but striking beauty of the
area is something we will not forget for a long, long time. It was only
topped by the amazing accommodation. We may have lost touch with our
cell phones, laptops and everything 2.0 but we found our sanity, our love
for simplicity ... and our souls.
An opportunity of a lifetime
Staying at Oceanfront Elizabeth J. Cottages was a superb experience. From the front deck, it seemed the world went by - icebergs, whales, fishing boats. We are hikers and hikes in the area are just fantastic, even in Bonavista (we will always remember being visited, nose to nose with the horses up at the lighthouse park. Cottage was small but everything we wanted and needed was there. Owners were very accommodating even to the point of buying gluten-free bread for one of us who was celiac. Finally, I cannot say enough about the people - we were welcomed everywhere we went; Newfoundlanders are a very special people. We liked the province so much, we are returning this year, this time to the other coast to Gros Morne Park.

The cottage was very cute from the outside and had a beautiful ocean view- and deck to enjoy it.. - the really outstanding part was the inside of the cottage - the decorating is gorgeous with so many elegant touches -can't think of a thing we didn't love ! -wish we could have satyed longer but were only able to book one night ..would love to come again.
Our Bonavista Retreat
We have travelled the world and the vacation experience at Elizabeth's Cottages is definitely world class. We are have been fortunate enough to stay at these cottages twice in the last few years. We have also recommended the cottages to our friends and they agree that Elizabeth and Glenn offer comfort and exceptional value.
Our days began with spectacular sunrises and ended with unforgettable sunsets. Sitting at the kitchen table eating a meal we watched the humpback and minke whales swimming in the bay. The natural surroundings gave us an opportunity to sketch, paint and photograph nature at its pristine best. Where could you go to the local fish plant and buy lobster or crab that were just out of that water and then prepare them for a great meal with friends?
There are many local attractions that can fill our day. Trinity, for example, is only a short drive from Bonavista. In the evening we could sit in front of the fireplace and read our favourite novels.
We wanted to relax in comfortable and clean accommodation when we visited Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula and we found that and more at Elizabeth J's Cottages.
We looked at all the pictures and read everything on the website so we thought we knew exactly what we were getting. but, nothing prepared us for the absolute beauty, the gorgeous location, the perfect amenities and the impecable service. We absolutely loved every minute--even the hurricane--pretty cool! just watching the pouring rain and the enormous waves---wow. And then--all of a sudden the sun was out. Sitting out on the deck with a glass of great wine--there is nothing better.

We were warmly greeted and felt at home immediately upon entering our 'cottage'. Fresh bread and treats and refreshments were greatly appreciated at the end of a long day.
Our cottage was absolutely lovely. It was so nice to be able to step outside the door and relax on the deck enjoying the ocean breeze. Beautiful!
We can't wait to visit again.

The ElizabethJ. Cottages far exceeded our expectations.
Elizabeth J. Cottages are by far and away the most beautiful, quaint and picturesque cottages in Newfoundland.
The attention to detail, the amenites, the friendliness, and the beautiful view made our stay absolutely perfect.
